That is a good praise report,Betty. I join you in the praise. The Lord has a pretty impressive genealogy too, but he said not to become involved in controversies about it. He sure had some interesting characters in his charts.----Karen Kerr
Very true. I seem to have the best of both worlds, my fathers family all being "Texans" from very, very early, and my mothers family ALL coming from Louisiana. Even my hubby, who IS NOT cajun, understands a lot, having lived in Chambers/Jefferson County all his life. When I tell him, "I think I'll go East this weekend, and spend some time at my cousins house." His immediate response is, to pace the floor, and tell me, "Pam, look, those people DON'T need a reason to party!!!" Then, I just tell him, I'm in good hands. And, he's a nervous wreck the whole time I'm gone!!! Pam --- Aline Holtzman <[email protected]> wrote: > Cajuns are a playful lot and have a language all > their own. I thought this was suppose to be a genealogy page, but I have had 44 messages today (Saturday) and 99.9% have no genealogy value whatsoever. It is just gossip about daughters weddings, Cajun mumbo-jumbo, etc. It's too bad. Would make a good source of sharing family info. That is if you didn't have to spend so much time DELETING off the garbage. arbage.
That is ya'll,,,,a yawl (as per Webster) is a ship's smal boat or a fore-and-aft-rigged sailboat carrying a mainsail and one or more jibs! Peggy
Karen I am one who has East Texas Roots, but that still does not make me a person who knows of the Cajuns ways. My dad never spoke of them. Maybe its because his family moved from Texas in 1916? He was born in 1905. You won't find any other family that laughs anymore than mine did and still does. Evidently Zydeco is somekind of music. We were dancers also to music. Yes we know computers was unheard of in the early 1900's. As to the crawfish and poke salad, that I know about, but not MAha berries. Oh well we learn more as each day ends. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 26, 1999 9:45 PM Subject: Decoding > It is difficult for me to beleive tht anyone with east Texas roots has no > familiarity with the Cajuns who live next door. My great grandfather was Cajun but he died before I was born as did my grandmother so I have no knowledge of their background. It is much like a foreign language to one who is from West Texas. Peggy
Thanks Alice, The light is beginning to dawn. Now all I have to worry about is all the good sites I may have missed when I didn't understand :) Pat -----Original Message----- From: Alice Chauvin Bradshaw <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, June 26, 1999 10:13 PM Subject: Re: Messages from the cajun >All the sites are Texas Cities and counties. It is difficult for me to beleive tht anyone with east Texas roots has no familiarity with the Cajuns who live next door. That would be like people living in San Antonio and Bexar Co. not understanding what fiesta, the Alamo, pinatas, enchilladas, picante,or mariachis were. I am sure that our ancestors did not have computers that kept them indoors and isolated from their neighbors.Even if they did, the Coon Asses did not have them and would have knocked on their doors and invited them to a soiree or offered them some gumbo. Cajuns are a playful lot and have a language all their own. I love it Alice. Perhaps someone needs to study up on these lovely people. Ok, everyone. I've been on this list about 2 weeks now, and I just this evening, figured it out!!!! Then, I get back on-line, and lo and behold, I wasn't the only one!!! I think it's a really neat idea!!! FYI: According to my book, "How To Speak Southern", written by Steve Mitchell, (whick I keep right next to my Websters Dictionary), everyone has mispelled the word that means "you all". The correct spelling is 'YAWL'. Yawl have a good one!!! Hi Alice, I do hope you understand that some of us (like me) just had a problem understanding what your messages were about. I honestly still don't understand. there seems to be a number of URL's listed under your signature. I guess I'm just afraid I might miss something important. Were you letting the list know about a good site for research? I really would like to know. You obviously put a lot of time in on this. Regards, Pat Culp [email protected]
Hi all..... I have too many non-genealogy notes from the friendly folks here, and am leaving you for a while. Pat
I'm glad I am not the only one that had no idea what all those messages were about. -----Original Message----- From: Sarah L.
