    3. Hello All, Maybe, at this point, it would be nice if everyone on this list would fix their signature line, so as to let everyone else know the names, and areas you are searching. If you put the county for each individual, the line usually ends up being too long. That's why you only see the state, where my ancestor was born, and the year he/she was born. FYI: In my first line, that O. is for OVERSTREET. It's a long name, and I had to shorten something. ALL of my ancestors, HOLMES & OVERSTREET, were either Tyler, Hardin, Jasper, or Newton counties. 1. My first Death certificates:
    2. I wanted to share some info/blow some steam regarding receiving my first set of death certificates on my black ancestors in Wood Co., Texas (BTW searching: GUNTER, MCKNIGHT, ANDERSON, FLOURNOY; NC>KT>AL>TX). It was a positive experience for me dealing with ordering from the state of Texas. As a suggestion, I enclosed the proper form, payment, SASE, and even called and was able to find out who specifically was working on my request. I received my DC's in three weeks. Why had I kidded myself to thinking that I would get information on these ex-slaves that was complete and answer questions that I had? It ended up that I still knew a bit more than the death certificates. For my gg grandpa and his brother, I didn't really expect the father's name on certificate, for they were rumored to be mulattos, but one didn't even have the mother's name, which is well known in our family. My great grandpa's was particularly frustrating. He died in 1922 and although his wife, mother, brother, and children were still living, the DOCTOR filled out the DC info and I'm stuck with several unknowns on the paperwork. On the death certificate on my gg grandma, Mary Jane Gunter Mcknight, the mother's name was noted as "Peggy", not the M.A. (on one census) or Lucy (on another census) that I've been trying to pinpoint. Someone did point out to me; however, that Peggy is possibly short for Margaret. Found this interesting also: DC for 1922=black, for 1941=colored and for 1963=negroid. And although I got a bit of helpful info here, reality struck, for I had psyched myself into thinking that all my questions would be answered. Happy hunting, Kim

    1. TEXAS & LA MAPS
    2. Just wanted to let all of you know in reference to maps: A small genealogical store near the Clayton Library in Houston has "sets" of maps for different states. I have a set of maps for LA (ancestors from there) 1810 - 1920 and do not remember the price, but was not expensive. Also have a single map of the "Republic of Texas" 1836 - 1846 show counties, Indian nationalities, etc. These maps are distributed by: American Genealogical Lending Library P O Box 244 Bountiful, UT 84010 Hope this will help you!
