    1. Genealogy Maps, etc.
    2. I noticed that alot of you are looking for maps, etc. Someone on another mail list told me about ebay. If you don't know what it is, it's an auction site that has become quite popular. If you go to the site and type in the word GENEALOGY, you would be amazed at what all comes up. I have won bids on maps and family histories, etc. So you might want to check it out.At least it is another option. http://www.ebay.com

    1. Prison records
    2. If they went to prison---they had a paper trail. One of my notorious relatives was gunned down before he got to prison, but he had quite a paper trail that I located at the Anderson CO.court house. Actually, while reading the transcripts from the trial of the men who ambushed my g uncle I found that a relative that I had been trying to find from my mother's side of the family had been one of the jurors. The two sides of the family were unaquainted at the time. The courthouses have records catalouged by dates. It's a great way to hunt. The District Attorney's office,or criminal court, will probably be too busy to help you do any research. They do however hand you one book at a time that you can scour for names. If you find your relatives name mentioned you can then ask for that particular transcript. In my case there were also newspaper headlines and a lot of info was contained in the accounts. If you get the dates of the trial from courthouse records, the next step should be the newspaper.I found this on microfilm at the library a few blocks from the courthouse. This is why I once said that ancestors that misbehaved were easier to trace than the good guys. They just did not make permanent county records and headlines when they got awards for perfect attendance in Sunday School. Those are the ones that I am having trouble locating. Karen Kerr

    2. My main 2 concerns are that I have no dates on this person, only an approximation as to how old he was, and that I was told he drowned in the Trinity River while incarcerated. How helpful do you think they would be to someone wanting to dredge something like that up? Where would you start? Thanks everyone for all the great advice so far. Dee

    1. MAPS
    2. This appeared on today's edition of Ancestry Daily News. Perhaps the map information will be helpful to those seeking maps. Jane I will need to obtain geographic information in order to more effectively understand the data, get a better idea of overall migration patterns, and a general feel for the vicinity where the individuals lived. Online maps such as those at MapQuest (http://www.mapquest.com) and Ancestry.com's free map collection (http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/maps.asp) are excellent, but I also prefer to have paper atlases--if for no other reason than the index. I usually buy print maps for specific areas where I need a high level of detail. The Ancestry Online Store has a selection of maps, atlases, and gazetteers for purchase at http://shop.ancestry.com/ancestry/mapsatlases.html. Online maps are excellent for modern areas and for determining some historical background and former borders.

    3. Joshua B Cochran family and cousins - let's get together and get to know each other and share our family histories! I've never set up anything like this before - so it'll be very casual and low budget. Let's get together on Saturday, July 24th starting at 2 p.m. at the Civic Center in Huntington (on hwy 69). Bring a snack, old pictures, etc. and be prepared to visit! I'll have coffee, a cooler of sodas and thought we could pass the hat to pay for the Center ($40) or if we need to - to get more sodas/drinks. I missed the deadline for the monthly Huntington paper - so I'm counting on the cousins to pass the word along!
