-- MORTALITY SCHEDULES This was posted on Ancestry.....someone was asking about it recently: Included in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses were questions regarding those who died in the twelve months prior to the enumeration. They list persons who died 1 June - 31 May of the year prior to the census. Even though these lists of deaths are widely believed to under-report actual numbers of deceased, this is still a valuable source of information. In many states where vital records were not kept it provides a nation-wide death register for five years between 1849 and 1880. The schedule lists the deceased name, sex, age, color, widowed or not, place of birth, month of death, occupation, and cause of death. In 1870 the parents' birthplace was added.

Rosenberg Library in Galveston has an extensive microfiche collection of old Galveston area newspapers. I don't know if they do searches for anyone, but you might try writing the Archivist at the library. I'm sure a letter just addressed to; Archivist Rosenberg Library Galveston, Texas 77550 would get to him. I would be sure to include a sase just in case, and maybe offer a donation for his time and work.

Hi List. Paul Thames wrote on the 3rd of July about Amos Tims/Thames. I don't have his death info but I do have some census info. Barbara L (Jones) Richardson wrote in part: "Hi Amy and E Worley, I have a Hugh Richardson b.1815, a William Richardson b. 1820, and a James Richardson (no birth date), as the story goes all born in Ireland. We have heard that one of them moved to Texas, My husband descends from William, who stayed in Pittsburgh area and from his son Thomas James who moved to Madison Co., Indiana. Do any of these names sound familiar?" Barbara, The names sure fit the family I'm looking for! My Thomas Richardson showed up in Trinity County, TX in 1853; prior to that I believe we've found him in Rankin County, MS in the 1850 census working as a drifting laborer; When my Thomas finally did marry in 1861 (age 45) he named his sons James, John B., William Thomas, Jacob Francis, Wood R. and George W. Not knowing my Thomas' parents or siblings, I'm only guessing (and praying) he named some of these sons after his father, brothers, uncles, etc. I have heard stories all my life that Thomas was from SC. In all these years, I've never found his trail there. I've also always been told he had dark skin, dark eyes and dark hair and he "talked funny" so the people in East Texas weren't sure what to think of him. Well, my theory is if he was from SC or somewhere in the south United States, he would have sounded like everyone else, or at least enough that no one would notice that he "talked funny".... just a theory of mine, but Ireland or Scotland or England has always been right there in my thinking. Or he came from up North somewhere. Please stay in touch. I would enjoy more comparisons on these guys! Amy McCroskie Denver, CO
I have found the following FREED in the 1880 Franklin Co, TX census records. I am trying to confirm that he might have been the father of a Daniel FREED who I am researching. The Daniel I am researching was living in Franklin Co in the 1900 census at age 33. Here is the info I have obtained from the census. John FREED -- 41 -- labor -- IN -- IN -- IN Malissa FREED -- 38 -- keeping house -- TN -- AL -- AL Daniel FREED -- 14 -- laborer -- TX -- IN -- AL Malvina FREED -- 11 -- at home -- TX -- IN -- AL Phoebe FREED -- 7 -- TX -- IN -- AL notice that the census showed that their mother said she was born in AL not TN. I am interested in anyone that might have info on this family. Did John and Malissa die in Franklin Co? I can not find them in different counties in 1900 census or later. I am not sure of the 11 year old's name. I have a hard time reading the older handwriting. If you have any leads or info on the FREEDs of Franklin Co, please email me. Thanks and good luck and good hunting in your researches...John Lowery
