Yolanda, all the information you have given is right. You will find some deaths that were registered at the counties just never made it to Austin. For that reason I always request my certificates first from the county clerks. Also, I have found extra tidbits scribbled on the pages by county clerks like a descendants name or comments about the death such as 'Killed at a RR crossing' that do not appear in the state extracted versions. Like all records, there always seem to be some that fall in the crack and never make it either place. Especially in rural areas where they had to bury someone before the doctor showed up. I use the index to find the county if I don't know it and then write the local county clerk specifying that I want only copies for family medical purposes and NOT certified copies. (This gets me $1/page charge instead of the more expensive one sometimes). Then at the last resort I get the copy from Austin. I also will get the Austin copy if the information is conflicting because you may find that someone filled in the form to go to Austin with different information. You're on the right track! Keep up the good work......jeri ______________________ Jeri J. Hi Jackie, I only have one AINSWORTH that I'm aware of, and it's the wife of one of my Parkers. My g-grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Parker b 1838 in Wayne Co., MS. She was the daughter of William Parker and Louisa Burnet. She married Thomas S. Richardson in 1861, my elusive g-grandpa. One of Sarah Elizabeth's brothers was Jacob Peter "Jake" Parker born 1842, also in Wayne Co., MS. He married in 1866 to Manerva Caledoia "Callie" Ainsworth born 1849 in Scott Co., MS. She was the daughter of Preston Potts Ainsworth and Mary A. Harper. Jake and Callie had 11 children, but ofcourse they are all Parkers not Ainsworths. If any of the names so far sound familiar, I have an entire family to share with you! Take care and stay in touch, Amy McCroskie Denver, CO

Hello Everyone: I would like to recommend a powerful search engine that you may have overlooked. The people at SNAP has a great one and is excellent for genealogical searches. Their URL is; http://home.snap.com/main/channel/item/0,4,-8889,00.html?st.sn.fdts.0.cp-8889 which takes you directly to their genealogy page and the search engine. Great tip here is to enter the name you are searching as "William Buckner" rather than just William Buckner and it will zero in on the genealogical aspect. Another search tip that will be helpful with any engine is to also search through your ancestor's wife as you will find much information on your primary line through the wife. This works well when you start running into brick walls with your male lines. In fact I can state that in most cases while working lines I have found that most of the information located has come from sources or researchers NOT working the line in question!! Otherwise from the wife's lineage or the female lines. Don't neglect this angle. Hey All! I have had a lot of questions on the Death Index subject so I thought I would just send some information to the list. The Texas Death Index is on microfilm at most all Texas libraries that have a genealogy collection. The years 1903 (when death certificates became required in Texas) through 1940 are in one section of microfilms, and then they are broken down from 1941-1945; and 1946-1973. From 1974 to 1995, are on microfiche and broken down by individual year, and then alphabetized. The first Index covers 37 years and they are just alphabetized by surname, giving the name of the person, county of death and file/certificate number. The rest of the years are broken down by individual years, and then indexed in each year by surname, giving the same information. As far as I know they are not on line or are they available on CD, or are they available through the Family History Centers. Now just because they are not listed in the index it does not mean that a death certificate may not have been issued. I have a great Uncle that died in 1936 and is not listed in the Index, but when I got his copy of his CSA Pension Application, the certificate was there, so they do pop up in the strangest places. I would check the county courthouse to see if it was filed there, it may have never made it out of the county records. Also, it will be filed in the county of death, this may not necessarily have been their county of residence at the time of their death, so check surrounding counties. Another source for Texas is the Birth Index, it follows almost the same pattern as the Death Index, but I am not sure if it goes past 1973. I hope this helps. Yolanda Pepper Miller
Does anyone know if a death certificate from 1917 would be available from the county court house? Or, where should I go to obtain a copy? It does not, necessarily have to be a "certified copy", just a plain copy would do. Any help will be greatly appreciated. RUSK PENITENTIARY The main building of the present Rusk State Hospital was built in 1878. The Penitentiary was receiving prisoners by January 1883 from the Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville, TX. These prisoners were used as convict labor for the iron industry in the area at that time. For more information on this institution, please check The Handbook Of Texas Online at the following address: <http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/RR/jjr1.html> Texas became a state in October of 1845, and in 1846 there was only one family living in Rusk. Rusk was chosen as the County Seat of Cherokee County and named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. ******* EAST TEXAS PENITENTIARY, Rusk. (since there was no code used in the census for Spanish/Mexican these were noted as mulatto) Keep in mind that even though these inmates have impressive trades or occupations, they are still inmates. Their skills were needed in every phase of making a prison system work. These men used their trade or special skills to do an assigned job. Certain positions had to be filled and as you will notice it seems they were able to fill those positions with the inmates. Prisoners were also used for many years by outside sources. The variety of requests were unlimited, from picking the crops to digging roadbeds or repairing and clearing areas needed for building or working in mines. Crews of men were a necessity in those days to get a job done. There were no machines to do the work. In all cases considering the times, it was "hard labor" until their sentence was finished, in some cases depending on the crime, until they died. Allen, James, white, 29, b. TX. Parents b. TX. Hello All :) I sure hope someone out there can help. I need to find information on my grandmother's murder/death, and possibly her family as well. Her name was Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) May, born 1/6/1926 (not sure where...maybe Arkansas or Oklahoma) died1/12/1964 in either Van (Van Zandt Co) or Gladewater (Gregg County). She was the former wife of Harry Merman May, Jr. They had divorced sometime in the early 1950's. They had three children. They had also lived in Longview (Gregg Co). My grandmother was brutally murdered and the case was evidently highly publicized. If anyone out there has newspaper clippings, articles, etc, of the case, I would be interested in any genealogical info they may contain. I have some possible names of Mary Elizabeth's parents....Harvey Lee JOHNSON and Florence "Daisy" or "Daisey" COPELAND (who was full Cheyenne or Cherokee Indian). Thank you in advance, Joy (Caver) Rice
Hello to everyone! Our Hall ancestors lived in the Burkeville, Newton, Jasper area for many years. My husband's great grandfather, John Clay Hall died in Burkeville July 12, 1853 and was buried in Spears Chapel Cemetery. We do not have the names of his parents or siblings. Would it be possible for someone to check the newspapers in perhaps, Woodville or Jasper, and see if they have archives that might have an obituary for him? John Clay Hall b Nov 21 1813 in Chesterfield Co., VA d July 12, 1853 in Burkeville and buried in Spears Chapel Cemetery. He married Lunetta Stephenson July 25, 1839 in Hempstead Co., AR and they had the following children: Mary Halcarnia Hall b May 6, 1840 in Hempstead Co., AR William Madison Hall b Dec 29, 1842 in Hempstead Co., AR John Green Hall b Mar 10, 1844 in Hempstead Co., AR Sarah Elizabeth Hall b Mar 10, 1847 in Burkeville, Newton Co., TX James Miles Hall b 1849 in Burkeville, Newton Co., TX David Harrison Hall b Apr 30 1852 in Burkeville, Newton Co., TX If you have any info to share with us, I would appreciate it very much and have family records to share also. Or, where should I go to obtain a copy? >> Pam, Are you familiar with the "Texas Death Index"? It was available till recently till just 1973, but now it current through the 90's. You can look up in that index and find the person you are looking for, 1917 would be in the Death Index for 1903-1940 and it is alphabetized. It will give you the certificate number and then you can write to Austin, giving them the certificate number on the index, the county and person's name, and get a copy of the certificate for $9.00. Send it to: Bureau of Vital Statistics Texas Department of Health P.O. Box 12040 Street Austin, TX, 78711-2040 To verify current fees:Tel: (512) 458-7111 Check or Money Order: Texas Department of Health One word of warning, if it is not the right person you want, you will still get the certificate and not your money back. Another thing, they have a form that they use when you go to Austin to obtain a copy of the certificate, but I find it best just to write a letter asking for the certificate of "my ancestor", if you are not a close relative sometimes they will refuse the request, (I think it's up to the person filling your order) but the ones I have requested as "my ancestor" have all been honored. Another thing, if it's not in the index it does not mean that there was not a certificate issued, it just may have not been registered with the state, then I would check the county, it may have never left their records. Good luck, Yolanda Pepper Miller
Dear Terri DURHAM-STONE, you wrote: >My Mary Nell DURHAM married unknown GROSS and unknown HOLDER >according to her SS-5 application, she is buried in Celina, and she also >lived in Pilot Point, and Denton Texas. You did not give dates, but with a SS application, it is much more recent that my records. I am looking in Republic of Texas days. However, there is a great genconnect page that is worth posting your GROSS query on:http: <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/g/r/GROSS/queries> Good luck, Jackie Ashley PACE of Pasadena, TX
