Somewhere in east Texas is the grave of Josephine (Josie) AUSTIN wife of John Felix Austin. It is unknown where she died or exactly when, although I would guess in the 20's or early 30's. It may or may not have been marked. Any information about this couple would be appreciated/ Thanks, Leona
The MCGHS will have its last meeting of the century, Monday Dec. 6, 1999 at 7:00PM. This will be a very short meeting to install new officers. Then we will have our Christmas social. So bring your favorite Christmas dish (might as well bring a few copies of the recipe as well. If you would please respond to me if you are attending the meeting so we can get a head count. If you are needing a Christmas gift, we still have a few afghans left for $50.00. Also, the History of Montgomery County would be very nice also, they are $22.50. Of course there are many other books available for sale. Jane Sanford Keppler Conroe, TX
http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/lobby/rc/index.html The Index to Republic Claims on Microfilm About the Republic Claims Project The Republic Claims series includes claims for payment, reimbursement, or restitution submitted by citizens to the Republic of Texas government from 1835 through 1846. It also includes files relating to Republic pensions and claims against the Republic submitted as public debt claims after 1846. The records include supporting documents such as vouchers, financial accounts, military records, receipts, notes, or letters. These historic records from the Republic Era have been microfilmed to preserve the highest image quality, and the entire series has been meticulously indexed by staff in the Archives and Information Services Division. The Republic Claims series consists of four groups of payments made for services rendered during the period 1835-1846. These groups are the Audited Claims, Republic Pensions, Public Debt Claims, and Unpaid Claims. Because the actual Republic Claims are extremely fragile, access to the records is restricted to high-quality microfilmed copies of the files. This Online Index provides an alphabetical list of indexed names with corresponding microfilm Reel and Frame numbers where the indexed name appears in one or more Claims files. The microfilm reels are available through Interlibrary Loan and, to view in person, at the Genealogy Collection of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Microfilming and indexing for the Republic Claims project were made possible by two generous grants from the Summerlee Foundation. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Jo Autrey jmautrey@email.msn.com
Daniel D. CULP was apparently a friend of Adolpus STERNE according to Sterne's diary. Recently a descendent of Adolpus Sterne posted a query but I deleted their address. Adolpus Sterne was in New Orleans on business when he died 27 Mar 1852. Daniel D. Culp was in New Orleans on business when he died 11 Mar 1852. Both were living in East Texas. Can anyone help with the following: Were they traveling together? Was there some kind of epidemic going on in New Orleans in 1852? Daniel Culp's body was put on the steamship "Mexico". Where can I find info about ships of that time? Thanks Pat Culp

I just received a couple of posts regarding the pie crust recipe. I didn't realize that some of you received the recipe with a star noted on the Crisco measurement and the water measurement. Those were fractions and evidently it didn't transfer well to all systems. It should read as follows: One and three fourths cup Crisco or 1 3/4 cup Crisco One half cup water or 1 1/2 cup water Lou Ann -- ******************************************************************** During our research trips, when a book is purchased relating to our family's history or listing information of the area, we buy two: One to keep and one to donate to our Clayton Genealogical Library in the family's name or a member of the family. This post is for those of you that are going to make your pies in the morning. This recipe works every time and will make five (5) pie crusts all in one bowl. It's wonderful, you'll love it! It's so easy, you won't ever have to be afraid of pie crust again. Lou Ann FOOL-PROOF PIE CRUST Lou Ann Lunsford from Aunt Clara This recipe makes 5 pie crusts at one time! 4 cups flour, lightly spooned into measuring cup 1 tablespoon sugar 2 teaspoons salt 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1 ¾ cup Crisco (not liquid shortening) ½ cup water 1 large egg ************* In a large bowl, stir together with fork, the flour, sugar and salt. Cut in shortening with a fork until crumbly. (I use my hands) In a small bowl, beat together water, vinegar & egg with a fork Add to flour mixture and stir until all ingredients are moist. (I massage all together by hand, it works quicker and mixes better) Divide dough into 5 portions and shape into round flat patty, ready for rolling. Wrap in waxed paper, chill for 20 to 30 minutes (optional) Lightly flour patty to roll out ..that's it! ******************************************************************** About 1975 - This is when Aunt Clara gave me this recipe: Aunt Clara was the oldest sister of Troy Phillips, my dad. She taught home economics for years in Oklahoma schools. When we had a family reunion before Uncle Coy died, she was so proud of all her pies, and to please all the men there, she made 5 lemon pies topped with meringue, they were just beautiful of course and the brother's could hardly wait to taste them. Aunt Clara had forgotten to put the sugar in the pies and needless to say they were awful. Everyone was afraid to tell her. She cut herself a large piece of pie and sat down to enjoy it. Her first bit, she almost fainted .She said "why didn't you tell me?" Everyone laughed heartily. But that really got away with her, she said "I'll never get over this, no one will let me!"

Looking for information on the John Henry Kelley family of Hickory Hill. John married Martha Jane Singletary dau. of John Singletary and Judith Barber probably in Titus Co. They were still there in 1900, but eventually settled in Ebeneezer outside of Pittsburg--I think it's in Camp Co. Who were John Kelley's parents? Their death certificates were filled out by son-in-law Sam Garrett as don't know on everything. He married their daughter Nell and lived across the road from their farm in Ebeneezer. John Singletary was the son of James A. Singletary and Martha Caroline Huckaby of Monroe Co., GA, died in Cass Co., TX early 1900's. Judith was the dau. of Matthew Tolbert Barber and Elizabeth Jane Shepherd of Butts Co., GA, who died in Hickory Hill, Titus, Tx. 1890s. Lillie B. Ruby SWITW@aol.com
Does anyone have information on a Mill explosion somewhere, probably around Hickory Hill in the 1880's? John Singletary m. Judith Barber is supposed to have been killed in a mill explosion sometime between 1880-1900. He was in the census in 1880, but by 1900 there is a Maude Price listed as sister-in-law, making me believe that Judith married #2 ___ Price. With no 1890 I can't narrow it down more than that. John was the son of James A. Singletary and Martha Carolin Huckaby who were from Monroe Co., GA, but died and are buried in Cass Co., TX. John and Judith probably married in Cass Co. as the Barber's were in Cass Co. too. I've seen some evidence that there were either two Hickory Hills, or it changed counties from Cass to Titus as the lines were formed. The Barbers were from Butts Co., GA, but lived and died in Hickory Hill, Titus, TX. Lillie B. Ruby SWITW@aol.com
Does anyone know of a Stovall possibly Scott connection in East Tx? All I know is my great great grandmother was Nancy Stovall named as such in a deed transaction after her death when her husband John Zachary Bell sold her land in eventually Titus Co., TX. The family thinks her maiden name was Scott, but there is nothing to prove it. She died in Oct 1858 and was the mother of William Frank Bell. The Bells lived just across Cypress Creek in Camp Co. from Nancy's sold land. There is a E. Stovall with wife N. 19 years old (1850) who doesn't show up on the 1860 census. Nancy was supposed to be a young widow and older than John. Can't determine who E. Stovall is, even throught the Stovall Family Asso. Family stories include a connection somehow to a trading post and that Nancy traveled by horseback along with a wagon train with gold sewn into her skirts. The wagon train may have come from AL., but I've seen evidence that perhaps the Stovall branch came down from IL (place of birth in 1850 census) with a minister's wagon train through TN where Nancy is supposed to have been born. John's #2 wife Martha Jane is supposed to have been Nancy's sister, but I can't find their marriage certificate. She is supposed to have come to look after W. Frank and then married John. John died during Civil War and Martha never remarried to my knowledge. Lillie B. Ruby SWITW@aol.com
