Looking at the page, I think probably day labor but to have real estate of $200 and be a day laborer isn't sensible and since I was wrong and it is 200 dollars personal property that seems wrong too. Ohio US census 1860. John George could be an illegitimate ancestor to me. Therefore I am doing considerable research into this family.(He would only be my ancestor if he came from Pembrokeshire, but there is no way of verifying this) His occupation is stated to be "D/L" and he has an estate of £200. I wonder if anyone would know what his occupation could be? > > > Many thanks > > > Yvonne Evans > > > ================================ > Dyfed list http://home.clara.net/daibevan/DyfedML.html > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi List and Eliz and Lynne, I expect that he was a day labourer as you state Eliz. I am puzzled though also, and I am wondering what would be the attaction to emigrate to USA as a day labourer? - but perhaps being a day labourer in USA was far preferable to being one in rural Wales? However this particular John George could have escaped from scandal in his native Pembrokeshire i.e. he may be the father of an illegitimate son (born Pembrokeshire 1834) who was my great grandfather. Were the 200 dollars savings he had brought with him from Wales?
