My wife Mary, born in Nantgwernog, a farm a few miles in the hills above Llanddewibrefi. lost her father at the age of six in 1942. As a result she knew very little about her father's side of the family, other than the names of his siblings. Having decided to rectify the situation, it was not long before I discovered that Dr William Evans, the eminent heart specialist, was related to her. This of course led to his grandfather, Joseph Jenkins, the Swagman. This was the link that opened the doors to my discovering almost a thousand members of the family. This family could in a way be described as overall one of the most famous families in Cardiganshire, for it included many of the early Baptist mninisters in England and Wales, most of the early Unitarian ministers, men well-versed in both the Classical and Semitic languages. All I had to do was sit in the Carmarthen Reference Library and trawl through the Births, marriages and deaths columns of the "Ymofynydd" for the Unitarians, and copies of "Seren Gomer" for the Baptists. Many members of the family produced reams of poetry and biographies, one tramslated Gray's Elegy into Welsh. Who has not heard of Allen Raine, many of whose novels were made into films? Incidentally Joseph emigrated to Australia due to the physical cruelty he was subjected to by his wife and daughter. The beautiful coral that one stood on his grave is in the safe-keeping of the Unitarian Chapel where he and many others of the family lie buried. If there is anyone out there with any links to the family, and especially to Nantgwernog, Brynglas or Brynambor, Llanddewibrefi, please do get in touch.
