Dick, *Never* use flash. You are relying on the screen to provide the light you need. If the screen settings are accessible then turn the brightness up as high as you can consistent with still being able to read it. If you cannot use a tripod then use your two elbows to brace the camera as much as you can. If your camera has an eyepiece then use that instead of the screen on the back of the camera, and your head is then extra support to keep the camera steady. To photograph a register then the use of a camera stand is preferable, or photograph on a bright day, near the window. For those who are unaware, TNA now provide seats with camera stands and approved lights that can be used to photograph their documents. There is no charge for using cameras.
