    1. [Dyfed] Welsh Choirs

    3. Thank you for the many suggestions concerning Welsh Male Choirs. I need to mention that with regard to the Tenby Male Choir, the songs I noted were but a few of those that I remember them singing. They sang several songs in WELSH, but not having a program with me, and not speaking Welsh myself, I didn't know the titles of those songs and so I didn't list them. Sorry. As one American (like most, not having come from a Welsh speaking family) and speaking only for myself, I like a combination of songs sung in Welsh and songs sung in English. I love to hear the old beautiful language of my Welsh ancestors, and I love being moved by the beautiful words as they sing inspirational songs in English. It's always strange for me to hear others say what Americans want or "don't want", as I think we're a rather diverse people. If the Tenby Choir came to the States we'd have the audience packed with my family, my husbands family, and our relatives and friends, with not a single angry soul in our group. Then we'd buy them out of CDs and go floating happily home to our stereos. It's not just the language that gives Welsh choirs their reputations, it's also their incredible voices. "No feeling when the song is sung in English"? You haven't heard the Tenby Welsh Male choir sing on the beach of Tenby, or the Fron male choir sing "Sailing". Never have I heard so many inspirational pieces within one hour. It was soul inspiring. The Tenby choir also sang Edelweis (sp) and a robust song in Welsh about Gymru or something similar and we enjoyed it immensely. Thank you again! Lea Sent: Monday, July 13, 2009 2:15 AM Subject: [Dyfed] Welsh Choirs I noted Ms Robertson's comment about the Tenby Male Voice Choir singing and she wanted a CD of it.? > > I'm sure they have beautiful voices, but what I'm curious about is, why weren't they singing Welsh-language songs? > I have heard many Welsh choirs come here to the USA and sing show tunes, Danny Boy, etc.? Great - they have wonderful voices - but the people in the audience get very angry - they want only Welsh-language songs.??? They want something from home not a show tune. > > I know that the choirs feel it is a mark of distinction that they can sing show tunes, Danny Boy, etc. - but that's not what the American people want.? By the way, many of them don't speak the Welsh language but they still want it sung in the "Language of Heaven."? There is a difference when a song is sung in Welsh and when its not.? There's no feeling when the song is sung in English.? I do not speak the language, although I sing it.? My father spoke and sang the language and I come from a Welsh-speaking Cardiganshire family. > > Annie
