    3. Dear Carol, Glen has referred to the possible marriage in the IGI of John Thomas to Sarah Summers recorded at Haverfordwest in 1860. The census info. indicates that she was born c. 1840 and, of course, her parents may have married after the cut-off point of 1837 for the Pemb. marriage index and before 1840.. After 1837, of course, certificates are available, so it may be possible to obtain Sarah's birth certificate. On 23/09/1834 a John Summers married Sarah Jenkins at St. Mary's Haverfordwest........and your Sarah perhaps could be named after Sarah Jenkins. It should be possible to trace Sarah Summers in the 1841 census as a baby and the 1851 for more family information. There are several rather important Summers males in Pembrokeshire at this time....some associated with Thornton House, Steynton, and it is recorded in the Historic Pembrokeshire Homes & Their Families book compiled from the work of the late Welsh Herald, Major Francis Jones, that a David BATEN Yeoman lived at Thornton House in 1623. However, closer in time a Thomas Batin, Labourer, married Mary Evan at St. Nicholas 12/04/1819...there are also several other spellings such as Batine through the years, which may relate to a different family. After David BATEN, the Andrew family lived at Thornton House, followed by the Crymes...Mary BATIN married William Andrew in 1762 .and in 1832 Louisa Crymes married James Summers, Solicitor and County Treasurer. A John Summers 05/01/1830 Gent. of St. Thomas Haverfordwest married Harriet Elizabeth Howell at Prendergast and on 02/04/1835 a William Summers of St. Thomas married Elizabeth Pernell at St. Mary's Haverfordwest. A John BATTIN married Grace Jenkins at Steynton in 1694/95...the different surname spellings may depend on the scribe of the times........but if you care to follow it, you may find the connection and reason for the Batin name is through Sarah Jenkins. There are a couple of Pembrokeshire Wills for Batin/e in various spellings, and about a dozen for the Summers name, but hopefully the census entries will put you on the right path. Perhaps Glen or Sylvia might oblige.
