Dear Joan I looked again at the 1871 census and your Mary Lewis who you say was born in Steynton and not in Bradford as the 1871 census shows. On closer examination I noticed that after the place of birth Bradford someone had written in another hand the word Yorks. So obviously we all took it for granted that she was born in Bradford, Yorkshire. However, when I looked at later census, sure enough she was shown as born in Steynton or Stainton. Looking back at the 1861 I could see she was shown there as born Ratford, Steynton. Checking back to 1841 there appears to be a Mary Williams of the correct age living at Ratford, which is a farm in Steynton. So the enumerator on the 1871 must have misheard Radford and written Bradford by mistake and someone later added the word Yorks. An easy mistake to make but it just goes to show how important it is to check all details before assumptions are made. I hope the above sorts your problem with Mary.
