This really is a warning never to take even official reports at face value (as if you would!). Sapper Seward R.J. Edmond R.E. died in the trenches 25th January 1915, nothing new there then ~ but his age in the report is shown as a clear 69 years old, well this really got me hooked, so turning to the CWGC website they show his age as 51, so clearly CWGC must be right (I don’t think). Looking elsewhere I find he was baptized at H’west in 1866 thus making his actual age at death at least 59 years ~ so was this the oldest county man to die on active service, I wonder? He certainly beats everyone else in my military database between 1722 and 2006. Rgds Owen V.
