    3. An interesting snippet I have just come across: The Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday 3 January 1912 (Sporting page) The late Mr. W. T. Jones the owner of Willaura was (says the "Sportsman," Eng.) known to his countrymen in Wales as William Jones, of Melbourne, on account of his connection with Australia, although he was a native of Aberystwyth, and was the son of the late Mr. Thos. Jones, draper, of Great Darkgate-street in that town. At the time of the "gold fever" he gave up a post in the school of the late Mr. John Evans, and sailed for Australia in company with the late Captain Humphreys, harbour master at Aberystwyth. At Ballarat a Cardiganshire man named Lewis was Mayor. There the youthful gold-seeker found work. Eventually he became a broker in Melbourne and during this period he made and lost two fortunes. His connection with Aberystwvth and Cardiganshire is best remembered by his generous gifts to the poor, and for years past each Christmas he has sent £100 for distribution amongst the poor of Aberystwyth and district.
