    3. Hi Mike, I'm sorry I can't help you with the derivation of the name "Noott" but it seems to be confined to Pembrokeshire, and as you say, the Haverfordwest area. There was a branch in Boulston near Picton Castle in early 19th century. One son moved to Castle Hill Farm, Templeton, Narberth , before 1850. There are also present day Noots in mid Pembrokeshire. My great great grandmother (Lettice Peregrine) was a diary maid with the Nootts of Templeton in 1851. I like you, would like to know the derivation of the name. I believe the pronunciation is Nayt or Noyt, so perhaps it developed to Noot or Noote In 1608 a Francis Noote lived at Capeston, a property in Walwyn's Castle parish, [source: "Historic Pembrokeshire Homes and their Families" by Francis Jones] Gerry Lewis

    3. Hello Mike I don't know the origins of the name - but there have been Nootts in Pembrokeshire for quite some time. The earliest marriage in PEM I have record of is 1694 but I have seen entries on IGI for even earlier dates. I remember Nootts in Haverfordwest when I was a child there - Are you able to get all the info you need for your friend or do you need any assistance? A pity my mother is no longer around she knew the families. 3. Hi Mike! I think that the first step would be to find the earliest reference of the name NOOTT and examine the parish register to ascertain whether this might not have resulted from a mistaken writing of the more usual surname NOTT. In my experience this was a common occurrence and could lead to a whole branch of a family bearing a mistaken alternative of the name. In my own case VIVASH has given rise to VIVEASH with that spelling often alternating for the same individual. The respected surname analyser PH Reaney certainly makes no mention of NOOTT. If my suspicion is correct, the name NOTT is an example of the nickname category (eg SHORT, LONG, LITTLE etc) and was originally bestowed on someone with little or no hair - from the Old English word " hnott" meaning bald or close cropped. Having said all that I'd be open to correction if examples of NOOTT can be found back as far as the 11th century when the earliest NOTTs occur.
