    3. A useful refernce book for surnames is "The Dictionary of British Surnames" by P.G.Reaney. Unfortunately I am in France at present and my copy is in the UK but any good library would have it. Perhaps another lister has a copy. Vera

Reaney doesn't give NOOTT and, whilst I'd go along with other suggestions, the fact that this name seems not to occur earlier than about the 19th century, leads me to veer slightly towards an original entry of NOOTT for NOTT, especially in view of the double "tt".
