    1. [Dyfed] Re Hanging and Death Certificate
    2. Hi: Thanks for supplying a copy of the death certificate. I did not know that Carmarthen had a prison in 1894. Re the writing at the far right of the certificate - it looks like somebody's name and initials. I don't think it has anything to do with the actual certificate. Actually I read the GM as an EM. You can see it here: http://www.llwynonn.eclipse.co.uk/borth/Thomas%20Richards%20death%201894.jpg Thomas Richards (cert above) murdered his sister in law, Mary Davies of Borth, and was subsequently hanged. Mary Davies is supposed to be a blood relative of mine. I have various newspaper reports and this is even in a couple of books. However, I've yet to prove the link to my family (and what I'm currently working on). What I wanted to ask .... the death certificate, the very right, outside the column for signature for registrar .... there is (what looks like) "Elevin GM". Could anyone cast a light on what this may be? Thanks, Alison

    3. Hello This situation came up a short while ago. The Eleven GM is the number o the correction in the record book and the GM is the initials of George Morgan the Registrar. The correction is in the date column changing the words Twenty ninth to figures 29th. According to the law under the registrations' Acts if an error was made before the entry had been completed by the registrar's signature then the mistake was crossed through and the correction numbered by the error and written and initialled e.g. eleven GM in this case by the side. The numbering started at one for each register - so in this case this must have been the eleventh error in this register. Looking again at the certificate next to the part in error is 11. Cheers Pat The rules also say the error must be underlined but as the two names are on the ruled lines on the certificate then that presumably suffices. 3. Dear Annie, Pat and Moni Thanks so much for your replies on this, it's helpful and cleared up some confusion for me! Last night, someone else suggested GM might have been the initials of the registrar, but they couldn't explain what they took to be "eleven". Annie and anyone else, there is a book The Black Flag Over Carmarthen, by Peter Goodall: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Flag-Over-Carmarthen-Punishment/dp/0863819664/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262616734&sr=8-1 which tells the story of some of the executions there. Thomas RICHARDS (whose death certificate I was enquiring about), is in this book. Note, I've no connection with the book.
