    3. Moni If you know the age of your Edward then it might be worth contacting the local register office who could check the certificates for you and send the appropriate one. Of course the two Edwards might have been a similar age so any other information you have on him will help. I agree with Bettye in that you might be able to distinquish between the two on the 1851 census. 3. Thanks Bettye and Yvonne for your replies. Bettye, thanks for checking the wills index. The early Edward and John Mainwarings of Llannon may link in with my family, but I haven't traced that far back yet. Perhaps my Edward who died in 1851 did not make a will because the family were poor. Sadly the 1851 census is not helpful in clarifying which of the two possible death certificate to order for my Edward Mainwaring. There were two Edward Mainwarings (of roughly similar ages) in the same registration district in the 1851 census. Unfortunately the death indices at that time recorded only the name and registration district of the deceased, not the age. So I can't tell from Free BMD which of the two Edward Mainwaring deaths in 1851 is mine. Yvonne, I'll try your suggestion of contacting the local register office to see if they are prepared to check the certificates for me before I order. I didn't know that they would do this. That would avoid me having to spend money unnecessarily through plumping for the wrong certificate as I have done many times in the past in similar situations! With thanks for your help and best wishes Moni 2010/1/6 Yvonne Watson <yvonne.watson@gmail.com>: > Moni > If you know the age of your Edward then it might be worth contacting the > local register office who could check the certificates for you and send the > appropriate one. 3. Moni I've found the local register offices quite helpful. I usually phone and tell them my problem and they usually say put it in writing and give them a phone number and they will try and see what they can do. Usually they are prepared to search a five year period. Although FreeBMD doesn't give ages for the early records the certificates do have the age at death on them. Also you could search burial records as they give ages and sometimes address. Someone on the list might have access to parish records.
