Thanks, Eliz - I was in Salt Lake City last week and only had a little time to look thru some records at the FHL. I found that Sussex has transcribed their Quarter Session Records (1661-1800) and Poor Law Cases (same dates). They were indexed by hundred. I was able to find, for example, a case in the Lewes Quarter Session, 23 April 1789: Brigden, William, yeoman of Cuckfield refuses to maintain his family of three grandchildren, Frances Berry c11, Sarah Berry c7, and Richard Berry c 5 all poor and impotent and unable to work and are now chargeable to Wivelsfield, he being of sufficient ability to maintain them; now ordered to pay 2s.6d per week from the present session so long as the said children are chargeable. [Richard BERRY, 24+, carpenter of Cuckfield married Sarah Bridgen, 24+, 1776 at Hurstpierpoint]. These are the types of records I am looking for - beyond bmd and the census. I don’t find they are listed at the Haverford R.O., but maybe I am looking in the wrong place. Is it that the records are no longer extant, or is it a matter of digging them out and transcribing them? List members - where can I find a list of the parish chest records that might be available for Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire? I’m particularly interested in the poor records and Quarter Session records. Lynne in Tucson
Hello Adrian I've had a bit of a look as I have lots of Thomas lines in that area. Actually I don't think yours is linked to mine but here is what I have found - tell me if you agree and get back to me if you want more details which I can send you offlist. First of all I think Emily is the one shown in the 1871 census here:- 1871 St Thomas Green, Haverfordwest JAMES, Louisa CHeadWid37MilfordPembrokeshire JAMES, John WStep-SonU16Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire JAMES, EmilyStep-DaughterU 14HaverfordwestPembrokeshire JAMES, William TSonU10"Pembrokeshire JAMES, Mary EDaughterU9"Pembrokeshire JAMES, GeorgeSonU7"Pembrokeshire JAMES, Charles RSonU4"Pembrokeshire PARKER, CharlesLodgerU32French PolisherCornwall PATTERSON, William LodgerU28LabourerLondon JAMES, ThomasSonM5HaverfodwestPembrokeshire As you see Louisa (also shown elsewhere as Lucia or Lucy) is Emily's stepmother. Lucis Cordelia Robinson married William James on 15 November 1859. William was a widower aged 38. He was a solicitor's clerk as you may see in the 1861 census.where thay are living in North Street. Previously he was married to Martha Williams on Jan 21st 1855 in the parish church Lambston There is a burial of a Martha James of North Street in St Martins on Dec 19th 1858 aged 28 which may be her. Let me know what you think. I can give you more details from the marriages if you need them Cheers Pat On 15/10/2013 14:35, Adrian wrote: > I am continuing to help my aunt in researching her family history. > > One major stumbling block is the marriage of Charles Edward THOMAS and > Emily JAMES that was registered in Haverfordwest in the June quarter of > 1877. I am continuing to help my aunt in researching her family history. One major stumbling block is the marriage of Charles Edward THOMAS and Emily JAMES that was registered in Haverfordwest in the June quarter of 1877. I have discovered details of Charles Edward's forebears but am stuck with the parentage of Emily. According to the 1881 census, Emily was born in Haverfordwest c 1856/57. After their marriage, the couple lived in Prendergast. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has come across this Emily in their research. Adrian Yorkshire

Hello group, I have hit a brick wall and am asking for some guidance in getting through it. Daniel Evans (1761-1830) He married Louisa Owen (1771-1841) in Llangoedmor, Cardiganshire on 5 Jul 1798. He died in March 1830 at Melin Ceri (Cerry Mill) and was buried in Brongwyn on 30 Mar 1830. The wall: I believe he was born in Llangoedmor, but the parish records for that time period are missing. I haven't found a record which would fit the timescale for either Daniel or Louisa. A clue may exist in the fact that he signed the marriage record with a fluent hand. My question: What other sources may be available to ascertain his or her parentage? Cofion, Howard, Montana, USA

Andy How far back have you traced your Philpin family? I am interested in an Isaac Philpin who was living at Redstone, Narberth in 1695. He was the son of John and Margaret Philpin of Redstone. Margaret was probably a Protheroe of Llanfallteg. Margaret joined the Quakers, and along with her second husband Henry Lewis, she emigrated to Pennsylvania. Isaac did not share his mother's religious sympathies. It is reported that on 15 Nov 1702, Isaac Philpin was unwilling to let the Friends (Quakers) have the use of his stables. Dear Andy Old Postcards, High Street Neyland I can find three on line - but there may be more if you are lucky! http://www.neyland.org.uk/history-of-neyland/ - has a 1930s photo. and there are two on this link - http://flickrhivemind.net/User/Exploretime/Interesting which are:- http://www.flickr.com/photos/40134891@N02/4281701040 and http://www.flickr.com/photos/40134891@N02/4281719014 Hint - the two links above, right click and choose "original size" and you, hopefully, will see a good clear image. I found these by googling High Street Neyland, and choosing the "image" option, rather than the plain search.
