Hello Sylvia You seem sure of your dates, in the 1841 Census the eldest daughter is down as 8 years old. This would tie in with Elizabeth marrying John in about 1832 when she would have been 21, are you sure about the dates? Giving exact dates implies that you have access to their records or an index of their records. What you need is someone to check the originals to give you the name of the parents. Hi Marjorie. Yes I have the same problem. It was bringing up too many matches at first, and ancestry are presumably still working on it. If you look at the image of the page then it will tell you the surname of the spouse. You can then look up that name in the same quarter. It it isn't Jones etc then it isn't too difficult. Hello Dai, thank you for your reply. No, it's not Jones I am looking for - it's Davies! I shall just have to be patient and hope they'll fix it soon, or at least put the old index back for a while. Good luck with your own searches Marjorie
Dear Joan I looked again at the 1871 census and your Mary Lewis who you say was born in Steynton and not in Bradford as the 1871 census shows. On closer examination I noticed that after the place of birth Bradford someone had written in another hand the word Yorks. So obviously we all took it for granted that she was born in Bradford, Yorkshire. However, when I looked at later census, sure enough she was shown as born in Steynton or Stainton. Looking back at the 1861 I could see she was shown there as born Ratford, Steynton. Checking back to 1841 there appears to be a Mary Williams of the correct age living at Ratford, which is a farm in Steynton. So the enumerator on the 1871 must have misheard Radford and written Bradford by mistake and someone later added the word Yorks. An easy mistake to make but it just goes to show how important it is to check all details before assumptions are made. I hope the above sorts your problem with Mary. Hello, thanks to a message on this list I used the new marriage index on Wednesday and was very pleased to be able to match up couples immediately. But now attempts to 'Find Spouse' fail. I don't know if this is a fault or if I have somehow managed to disable it. Has anyone else experienced this and if so have you overcome it? Any help or advice will be very welcome. Thank you Marjorie

Thank you , this looks right apart from place of birth Bradford. Mary was born in Steynton according to all other census years and I haven't come across Sarah Janes before but as she would have been 17 in 1881 it is likely that she was in service somewhere else.
