In my questt, I have made contact with several Registrar's offices, but there none have been as helpful as the Registrars and staff of the Haverfordwet and Bridgend offices. These two offices have turned every stone to help me obtain certificates of my ancestors. I want to publicly thank them from their cooperation and efforts. Thanks again to Haverfordwest and Bridgend Registrars and staff. Megan Smith

Hello listers, Hope you don't mind but I am asking the same question again in the hope that someone has some information. I was told that James Phillips born 1854 in Castlemartin Pem was a champion wrestler in the sport known as "Catch -as catch- can" and that there were ten yearly tournaments before the First World War.If anyone knows anything about the tournaments I should love to know. Regards, Joan
Dear Bettye, Thanks for these marriages, but the dates are a bit late for the JOHN HOWELL(S) - MARTHA UNKNOWN marriage. I now know that John amd Martha had at least 3 children. PHOEBE HOWELL (born c.1778 Llanychaer, married DANIEL WILLIAMS), JOHN HOWELL (born 1797 Llanllawer, married ANN ROWLANDS) and THOMAS FRANCIS HOWELL (born 1799 Llanllawer, married LYDIA REES. My gg.grandparents). Phoebe was born when her parents were about 21 years old, so perhaps she could have been the first child? There were probably other children born between 1778 and 1798. The ANNE HOWELL who marries JOHN LLEWHELYN in 1808 looks likely doesn't she, thanks for that one. It's rather interesting that there is a JOHN LLEWELIN aged 44, born Monington living at Clyn Farm, Llanychaer in 1851. This is the farm where my g.grandfather JAMES HOWELL and his siblings were born in the 1820s to 1840s. By 1851 they had moved to Fishguard. Perhaps this John Llewellyn was Anne Howell's son and my g.g.grandfather THOMAS FRANCIS HOWELL passed his tenancy over to his nephew? Thanks again for your help. Dear Sally, I presume that your g.g.g.grandparents were John Howel who married Martha James at Fishguard in 1786...just to confuse matters a John Howel married a Martha James in 1784 at Newport...recorded in the same Cemais index. Mary Howel in 1783 at Llanllawer married JOHN Harry. Margaret Howell who married John Oliver in 1790 certainly fits into the timeframe....and the surname spelling variations may just be the result of a scribal error. I noticed in the records that an Anne Howell in 1808 at Llanllawer married John LLEWHELYN and in the same year and place William Llewhelyn married Rachael Jones...(I'd say the same vicar wrote the records), then I checked for Wills: David Llewhellin, Llanllawer 1805 Elizabeth Llewellyn, Llanllawer 1842 Evan Llewellin, Llanllawer 1821. As you can see, not one of them has the same spelling as John and William...but surely Llanllawer wasn't big enough to accommodate four Llewellyn families of differing origins, was it? Bettye Kirwood, Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally Lloyd" <sallyglloyd@tiscali.co.uk> To: <dyfed@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 23, 2009 10:01 PM Subject: [Dyfed] PEM - OLIVER & HOWELL marriage 1790 > Hello Yvonne and Bettye, > > I'm fairly certain that the marriage of JOHN OLIVER and MARGARET HOWELL > has > a connection to my family. > > I have the will of DAVID HOWELL of Penymynydd, Llanllawer(I don't have it > in > front of me but I think it was proved in 1813) and it names JOHN HOWELL > (b.about 1757 married MARTHA. my g.g.g.grandparents), DAVID HOWELL, > MARGARET > HOWELL (wife of JOHN OLIVER)and MARY HOWELL (dead by 1804, married to > [..?..] HARRY ) . Please can you help me with a problem?. Richard Hall was born 7 July 1844 Lamyatt Somerset, his birth cert; gave only his mother's name, Martha Hole. His marr; cert; his fathers name Richard Hall, 24 January 1874, Llanwenarth Ultra, Monmouth, I know the name was given as Hall or Hole, the later family used Hall. My conundrum, was Richard elligitimate, his mother later marrying the father, yet his mom had the Hole name. Would SKS have the 1841 cencus for Somerset hopefully finding mother and father, I believe the cencus # is HO107/963 for Lamyatt. By the time Rchard jnr married in 1874 he had moved to Monmouth in Wales. Thank you. Sylvia in Kentucky
