Hi Peter On the basis that it was supposed to be town/parish & county on the census, what about Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire ? http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CMN/Kidwelly/index.html You'll probably need to look at the original source, unless another census entry is available. Colin Boncath is in Pembrokeshire & as you say about 10mls from Newcastle Emlyn. After turning left at Cenarth (coming from the Carmarthen / Newcastle Emlyn direction) you will travel through Abercych & Newchapel - following the same road - getting you to Boncath. Do not know if it is the only Boncath in Wales - but it is named after (one of) the Welsh names for 'buzzard'. Thanks Gareth I did Google this and as you say only one comes up. I do know that some place names in Wales do seem to be duplicated in other counties too. I have friends in Boncath who are related to my cousins wife so I will get them to check out addresses for me. I think this must be the right one as the people I am searching for is my Great Grandmother and it seems about right because if this is correct her daughter lived in Newcastle Emlyn and that is where my mum was born. Thanks for the replies to this. The family tree looks like: John Bateman of TRENEWYDD, Pembroke and Anne of Fishguard were married about 1591. Their children were : o Thomas Bateman m Anne verch Rys ap Ieuan o Phillip Bateman o Owen Bateman m Elen Wilkin of Trevine o Sioned (Janet) Bateman m Phillip Prydock (or ap Rhydderch) of Dinas o Margred Bateman m Owain ap Gruffydd ap John ap Llewelyn of Gryallwyn, Pembroke o Sian (JANE) Bateman m EDWARD ap Howel ap Gruffydd o'r GUTO o Elsbeth Bateman m Ieuan ap Gruffydd ap William ap Ffylib o Ann Bateman m Jams Mortmer ap William Mortmer o Langoedmor, Cardigan? Help with the locations of these spouses would be excellent. Thank you Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
Minor correction-and I'm sure what Anne meant - Guto is the accepted diminutive/pet-name for someone called Gruffudd/Gruffydd/Griffith as I assume several of my ancestors were- my paternal grandmother was a Griffiths before she married as was probably my ggg grandmother in the same line!). Hi Listers I have another strange question: In a family tree of the Batemans of Trenewydd I have Jane Bateman (d/o John Bateman and Anne) who married Edward of GUTO. This marriage would have taken place about 1610-1620. Can anyone tell me where GUTO might be? All I can find on the web is mention of a person named Guto. Thanks Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
