    3. I'm searching for information regarding Thomas Evans, born abt 1838 in Llandefroig, Cardiganshire. Mother's name unknown, father was Benjamin, a laborer. I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Jemima Jones, daughter of John Jones, in Craig Chapel 7 Apr 1870 which confirms Thomas' father's name. Witnesses to the marriage are William Jones and David Rees. Thanks for any help you can give me. Howard Evans

    3. Hi all, especially Lea, I am wondering if Plasy y Barlo was named after its owner a "Barlow". There were Pembrokeshire gentry named Barlow, and I just wondered if they owned the cottage and land. Tithe maps and Land Tax Maps for the area might show who were the owners. 3. Hi all With all this discussion about Cwm-miles I thought I would throw in my interest in this area. In the 1841 census my 3xg grandparents lived at Pompren Mill - fairly close to Cwm-miles bridge as far as I can find out. Any information on this family or Pompren Mill would be welcome. Thanks Tommy

    1. Re: [Dyfed] PEM- EVANS and LLEWELYN familes
    2. Sylvia Birch
    3. Dear Anne The 1861 shows Margarets father as William Llewellyn, then aged 80. The only William I see which fits, is as shown on the 1841 I sent you. There he was living with Mary and his daughter. William married Mary Phillips at Bosherston in 1815. Your Margaret was baptised at Bosherston on the 26th May 1816. Her brothers and sisters were according to the baptisms James baptised 26th March 1820 Sarah baptised 5th April 1827 (this will be the Sarah shown at home with mum and dad on the 1841 census). There may have been others but these are the only three shown. The family including Mary Evans were living at Alma as you will see by the 1861 census before Mary married James Baker. By 1871 Mary was widowed. The 1841 shows Margaret Evans, living at Back Lane Bosherston, which if you remember is the same address as her Mum and Dad. There were probably several cottages there. In house were Margaret age 25, Mary age 4, Sarah age 2 and William age 14 days. I presume Dad was out working somewhere. According to the 1841 Mary Phillips who married William Llewellyn is shown as age 55 (remember that in 1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0), that puts her as born roughly 1786. Sarah their daughter by 1851 was working in St Issells. The burials show the following Llewellin, Mary - bur. 2 7 1858 (age - 81) Llewelling, Ann - bur. 30 6 1824 (age - 67) Llewellyn, Elizabeth - bur. 4 6 1882 (age - 2) Llewellyn, Thomas - bur. 10 6 1882 (age - 00) Llewhellin, Elizabeth - bur. 25 5 1811 (age - ) Llewhelyn, John - bur. 27 2 1832 (age - 88) In 1851 they still lived in Back Lane, Bosherston. William aged 70 a labourer born in Bosherston and this bit of extra information Mary age 72 born COSHESTON. So between 1841 and 1851 Mary had gained 17 years not 10. If the above burial of a Mary Llewellin in Bosherston is her then it shows her as age 81 in 1858, making her born approx 1777. So really you need to look at Cosheston records and try to find a baptism for a Mary Phillips around 1777 to 1786. If you can find that then you will know her parents. I hope the above proves to be of some help to you. Best Wishes Sylvia ................................................................. 3. Thank you Dai, John and Yvonne for a new Harness Maker in my family. And thank you for the information about Plasybarlo. In my 5 X Great Grandfather's will (George Morgan) in 1818 he passes on his home "Place Barlow". I think the "English" speakers may have been doing the actual writing of the document. In 1841 his daughter Hannah is living in Plasybarlo with her husband Evan James. Also living there is Thomas James the maker of harnesses. Most of my family in the area made shoes with the leather. I've noticed a Plasybeili nearby which is of interest because I have Thomas relatives in the area that I haven't pieced together and I wonder about the Thomas' living at Plasybeili, Penrallt, and others. Thank you all (Texan) again. Lea

Also in 1881 and 1891 living at Alma Cottage were James Evans and his family. Looking at the original images. The 1871 does show William as born Bosherston and also shows John as his son. Later census contradict this showing William as born in Cosheston and John as his grandson! 1841 Living at Back Lane, Bosherston William Llewellyn, age 60, occ agricultural labourer. Mary Llewellyn, age 55 Sarah Llewellyn, age 15. 1841 does not give place of birth, other than telling you they were born in Pembrokeshire. William Evans married Margaret Llewhelyn at Bosherston on the 3rd September 1836. A William Llewhelling married a Mary Phillips at Bosherston on the 26th June 1815. The differences in the spelling of the surname Llewellyn are as written at the time. You can find Bosherston baptisms, marriages and deaths on line. 3. hello all, Indeed the cottage I know of does seem as if it is a holiday let now, but it still retains its old Welsh cottage look. Interestingly E.T. Lewis' book "Efailwen to Whitland" states there was a tannery at Cwmmiles in the 19th century. Therefore Thomas James would not have had any difficulty in obtaining leather for his harnesses. Their children were James, Mary, William, John, Elizabeth, George, and my great grandmother Margaret (Peggy) Evans who was born in Penally in 1858. The family lived in Alma Cottage, which seems to have come into the family through James BAKER, who married Mary Evans. He served in the Crimean War. Margaret married my great grandfather William SANDERS who was stationed at the army camp in Penally. They moved to Chelsea and raised their family there. I visited Penally in 2006 and could not find any direct descendants of my family living there. Many thanks in anticipation Anne
