Photography is by Dai Bevan, Tom Bevan, and John Ball, but there are also a few early 19th century engravings of the Abbey. 3. JENKINS, Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn CGN: As you say, David, I think they are from our area, i.e. Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn CGN. Starting at Dolypandy, Melindwr after marrying into the Tynllidiart family, and moving to Tanyreithin. Some of the children moved to London. I assume Alf has this, so won't repeat it here. If not, I can send it to you off-list, Alf. I cannot, at this stage, connect it to our JENKINS' interests even though they too went to London. There was a very vague story about friends or distant relatives living in a flat in the Mansion House, London, probably as late as the 1930-40s as "during the bombing" was mentioned. No proof whatsoever. Who would have a flat there, housekeeper, security perhaps? Any rumours, like that in your family, Alf? 2. melanie stark
    3. I have traced a direct line back to William Cornock born in 1804 in Newbridge, Scleddau. I believe his parents were called David and Mary. The family went on to live mainly in Manorowen/Llanstinian areas. I am now tracing another Cornock - David born 1889 in Llanfair-nant-Y-Gof, Pembs who married my great-grandmother's sister Rachel Thomas in 1916. This David Cornock's family - father James, Grandfather William all lived Llanfair-nant-y-gof too i've found a connection on RootsWeb which says the two families were related further back.. not too much of a stretch. Is there anyone else researching these families or anything Cornock related I'd be interested. Many thanks in anticipation, Melanie. 3. Brian Have a look at the Sion/Seion entries on Genuki, and Dyfed FHS, and then the translation from the Hanes books. Seems Penmaes glas was also the name of the chapel place. After an admittedly cursory reading I am confused between the two chapels, did one replace the other ? But in any event the pics on the FHS site suggest there wasn't room for a graveyard, adjacent at least.. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CGN/Aberystwyth/Chapels.html http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/CGN/Hanes4.html#ABERYSTWYTH Let me know if you feel some additional explantion would help clarify the two Genuki entries Gareth Genuki Wales http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/ Help Page http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks.html Cwmgors/Waun http://www.tytwp.plus.com/Waun/Waun.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Forder" <brian.forder@ukonline.co.uk> To: <DYFED@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 27, 2009 9:14 AM Subject: [Dyfed] Penmaes Glas, Aberystwith > Greetings Listers, > > I have on a Death Certificate for 1862, the place of Death as Penmaes > Glas. > > I notice on the Welsh Chapels list that there was Sion Ind Chapel in > Vulcan Street, Aberyswith in later years descendants lived in Vulcan St. > > Can anyone give me more information on this Chapel and if there was a > graveyard attached. > > Regards, > > Brian Forder

    3. Alf I suppose that since you've directed your query to this list you are trying to find out something about your Ceredigion roots! Here are some initial thoughts: Do you know which Llanfihangel Edward Jenkins was born in? (It just means 'Church of [St] Michael' so there are lots of them.) Llanfihangel y Creuddyn (south of Aberystwyth) and Llanfihangel geneu'r glyn (north of Aberystwyth) are obvious candidates. Do you know where he and Ann lived after marriage? If you have the family in any census that should help identify their dwelling. If it was in Llanbadarn Fawr (note spelling; just East of Aberystwyth) then you should review the Llanbadarn graveyard site at: http://www.llanbadarnchurchyard.org.uk/index.html The names are so common, though, it will help if you know where (probably meaning the name of the farm) they lived at. If they lived at Llanfihangel geneu'r glyn then that is centred in the village now called 'Llandre' but could include the villages of Borth or Bow Street, all just to the north of Aberystwyth. There is a Llandre graveyard index here: http://www.llandre.org.uk/project2.php But you might also like to check the Capel-y-Garn site and review the pdf of the graveyard index at that site too, available here: http://www.capelygarn.org/cemetery.php David Canberra On 27/09/2009, at 3:05, alf&Joan wrote: > Hi > I would like to hear from anyone with knowlege of this JENKINS > family. > Edward JENKINS born 1813 Llanfihangle Cardiganshikre > Ann JENKINS born Ann HUGHS 1820 Llambadarn Fawr > children: Ann(1842)Hugh (1846)Elizabeth(1848)Sophia(1850)Richard > (1857)Margaret (1859)William (1861) > Hugh JENKINS9(1846)married Ann WALTERS and moved to London in the > 1870,s He is a widower in London 1911 > Elizabeth JENKINS(1848) married Edward EVANS in 1877 and had 7 > children. > Richard JENKINS(1857) married Jane EVANS(1858) in London in 1879 and > had 6 children > The youngest Lizzie (1896) was my mother.. > Any information would be appreciated > Alf BUSHNELL Western Australia > > ================================ > Dyfed list http://home.clara.net/daibevan/DyfedML.html > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DYFED-request@rootsweb.com > with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and > the body of the message

    1. [Dyfed] Cardiganshire - Llangybi Paresh
    2. Hi:? I tried to send an answer to the two emails that were included in the last Dyfed email but neither email was sent for some reason. The major port of the 19th century was Liverpool. Bristol was earlier - the 1600's.? People may have sailed from a small Welsh port into Liverpool.? Look at the passenger lists for the year you think your ancestor came to America and go from there.? Yes, Castle Garden was before ellis.? But still its for people who came steerage.? If your ancestor didn't come that way, he's not going to be mentioned.? If you know here your ancestor came to in the USA, look for the name of the county and once you have it, look for a county history.? Your ancestor may be included in that county history.? I know I found a relative that way. Dai, thanks for the information about St. Lawerence Co., NY.? I'll look at it. I'm still interested in the person who came from Llangybi parish.? I might have information for you, if you are interested. A number of people from Dyfed, including a large group from Glynarthen settled in St. Lawrence County, N.Y. A site dedicated to the founders of the Welsh Congregational Church in Richville NY can be found here. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nystlawr/Welsh/richville.html.? My THOMAS relatives sailed from Liverpool in 1852 (on the Irene.)? ? Dai? ?

    3. One more item from an old newspaper for now: Davis of Bridell. (I wonder if that should have been written 'Davies' but 'Davis' is how it is in the newspaper.) This is from 'The Brisbane Courier', Thursday 6 February 1890: DEATH DAVIS. —On the 3rd February, at Brisbane, Henry Coghlan Davis, oldest son of the late Captain Davis, of Ty-Gwyn, Bridell, near Cardigan, South Wales. 2. David Rowlands
    3. Here's another mention of a Cardi with a nautical connection (this time, The Argus, Melbourne, Friday 5 October 1888): 'Jones—On the 3rd inst., at 60 Storey-street, Parkville, Lewis Jones, second son of the late Captain David Jones, Portland-street, Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, aged 44.' I couldn't find an obvious candidate for this Captain David Jones in Reg's Morwyr Cymru list (though there is an Edward Jones in Portland St, Aber.) This bloke, Lewis Jones, must have been a proud Cymro. Further down the page there is this notice: Funeral Notices. CAMBRIAN SOCIETY of VICTORIA.—Members are requested to follow the remains of their late honorary secretary, LEWIS JONES, to the Melbourne Cemetery, on Friday. The funeral will move from his late residence, 60 Storey-street, Parkville, at 8.30 p.m.
