Greetings. It has been know for many years now, that amongst our American Friends,The United Kingdom doesn't exist. As they call it "England". Or to put it another way,The United Kingdom is in England. A funny thing happened when, Many Years ago, I was the Assistant Secretary of the "Glamorgan F,H.S;" My Job was to handle all of the "Overseas Mail". We had a letter one day that was posted in Texas U.S.A;that was addressed to us in Cardiff. And the only addition to that address was "South Wales". And Nothing else! We wondered WHY this letter had Taken over 4 weeks to arrive to us? I could then see why? For on the Front of the Envelope, somebody had added.... "Try ENGLAND!" I could then see WHERE else this Letter had travelled to,Before it arrived on Our Doorstep. As on the Reverse side of the Envelope was "Stamped" "NEW SOUTH WALES!" So then,Our Letter had gone from Texas to New South Wales in Australia. As obviously Nobody in the U.S;Postal Service had Heard Of "South Wales". So on Arrival in New South Wales,The Postal Staff put "Try England". Needless to say,It arrived safely. -- Graham Williams.of Canton,Cardiff. Chairman,"Canton Historical Society". Glam;FHS;#551.

Hello list, Who can help me with my search re to the deathrecord of Evan Davies, son of Howell and Sarah Davies. I have his birthrecord which tells me that he was born 21-9-1850 at Rhyddgoed fawr, Penboyr. Evan must have died soon after birth. He is not in 1861 census with parents. His father had died in 1856, but he is not buried in his fathers grave. Grave at Kenarth. The headstone only mentions another son Howell, who had died in the same year as his father. Which registrar would I need to ask? Elwyn - netherlands
Hello Owen Thank you so much for the hint of looking on the B&G Forum for information on the Griffith's family . It contained all the information I needed. Bob

Hi Nina I understood that the cemetery north of Quarry Road was opened when the old Gibea graveyard was full, but also served as a public cemetery. I have family burials there from the late nineteenth century. Best wishes Anna At 30/10/2009 10:22 U+0000, Nina Jenkins wrote: >I understand that the cemetery at Brynamman was not opened until 1927. I understand that the cemetery at Brynamman was not opened until 1927. I am looking for a burial that is not in the parish church and think a public cemetery was more likely anyway, but cannot discover where there was one at this time that would have served the people of Brynamman - does anyone know please? Thank you Nina Jenkins
Dear Listers For those interested in the Ormonds of the town of Pembroke I have multi listing in my index of Pembroke St Mary Baptism mrge and burial registers post 1822. Hello List from David Gilroy in St.Albans . Can anyone help me with finding any children of Benjamin and Rachel Lewis (farmer ) probably in the St.Clears area in the very late 1700's or early 1800's ? In the 1841 Census they were at Dolpwll , Penrydd,Pembokeshire . Benjamin died there in 1842 aged about 62 and Rachel also there in 1847aged about 67 .A daughter Phoebe LEWIS living with them is known from a later Census to have been born in St.Clears ,Carmarthenshire in 1817 .They had all lived at Dolpwll from the mid 1830's- before that the following clue . I appear to have found Phoebe on the igi as follows :- Febe LEWIS chr 25 July 1817 at Bethlehem Ind.Congregational ,St.Clears ,Carmarthen of Benjamin LEWIS and Rachel . There is little else obvious and as Phoebe was probably the last of Benjamin and Rachel 's children - where are the rest ? Any ideas and possibly a marriage of Benjamin LEWIS to Rachel ??? around 1800 greatly appreciated . I am awaiting arrival of some Dyfed FHS fiche but they may not be early enough - hence this query . Thanks and best wishes , David Gilroy . 29 October 2009.
Bill, although I can't prove it at this moment, I do think you are right, that the Land Tax Assesments were filmed at the old PRO at Kew by the Mormons. One thing I forget to tell everyone is that in some instances, the owner of a piece of property, may own more than one piece of property i the same parish or in different parishes. sometimes, all the properties are put together in the parish where the landowner hmself lives. In one case, one of my relatives lived on a farm in Llanwenog parish that I could never find on those LTA's. I later found him listed with the owner of the land in a different parish, miles away. Annie Attached Message From: BILLGJ@aol.com To: dyfed@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Dyfed] Re Land Tax Assessments Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2009 07:59:51 EDT The 1798 Land Tax assessments are different! They went to the Public Record Office (now the National Archives at Kew) for use by the clerks recording the owners who were exonerated from the tax - essentially these owners had bought it out with a capital sum (much needed by the government at the time to help finance the Napoleonic Wars). These would have been much easier for the LDS to film. Bill G-J

Hello Listers, I have now found a book that may contain some info on ancestry of Jesse James and Frank James outlaws. Unfortunately I have not yet got hold of it. Its a Welsh language book written by Dafydd Meiron called "Cymru Gwyllt y Gorllewin" This translates into "Wild West Wales" I know the author discusses the Pembrokeshire ancestry of Jesse James, amongst other subjects. Jesse James' direct ancestor(g.grandfather) was William James born Pembrokeshire but moved to US before the age of 20 as he married Mary Hines in Virginia in 1774. He was born in Pembrokeshire in 1754. As far as I can see all the siblings of William James were born in Pembs. I am still uncertain whether they were from Little Newcastle, but the book will probably tell me. There is great confusion amongst the people in US about the correct ancestry of the James' brothers. They naturally state that William James was born in England! Best wishes Yvonne Evans

Perhaps you are referring to only those Americans who DON'T have Welsh ancestors and cousins. The rest of us certainly wouldn't make that error. :) ~Elysia ----- Original Message -----
Hello List I am trying to prove to myself that the Frederick Shears born to George and Elizabeth Shears is the Frederick who married Adelaide Gascoigne in 1919. I cannot find another Frederick to fit, but feel certain he is the one. Also who are the parents of Rebecca Shears born Steynton ? any information will be welcome. Bob
