    3. Thanks David,   You commented:-   "Not sure whether the comment is intended as optimistic about the  language or implies some fear of the foreign nature of Welsh to the  English [...'Double the number of persons now speak Welsh who spoke it in the reign of Elizabeth.']   I can't quite understand the newspaper comment since the population had probably increased since the times of Elizabeth - perhaps a spot of early newspaper spin creeping in there.  Your report (1849) from the Australian newspaper is arguably reflecting the growing opinion that the Welsh language was a drawback to social progression and written two years after the Treachery of the Blue Books (1847). (BRAD YR LLYFRAU GLEISION). These are on the LLGC web pages http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=295 (saesneg) http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=295&L=1 (cymraeg)   In 1870 the Compulsory Education Act came in - more or less in good working order in Wales by 1880. From 1891 census returns in Wales asked for the Language spoken,  and in the 1911 census in Cardiganshire parishes and elsewhere I have noticed enumeration responses being given in Welsh - eg penteulu rather than Head (of household) etc.   Many thanks   Jen   --- On Sat, 14/11/09, David Rowlands <drowlan1@bigpond.net.au> wrote: From: David Rowlands <drowlan1@bigpond.net.au> Subject: [Dyfed] The Welsh language in 1849 To: "Dyfed DYFED" <Dyfed@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, 14 November, 2009, 6:32 A bit O/T, I know, but here's a two-sentence item from an 'Odds and  Ends' column in the Sydney Morning Herald, Wednesday 26 December 1849.  That places it around the about the time my great-grandparents were  born. The family are at: Mifflin,Iowa, Wisconsin Hope this is of some help Gerry Lewis-Steer, Calgary, Canada PS If you could get to an LDS family history library you would be able to get more US census results.

    3. Dear Cardiganshire/Carmarthen Listers.   This query isn't quite historic yet, but historic enough to be last century.   In March 1947 a train (or several trains if one counts the rescue attempts) were marooned on the Derry Ormond - Llangybi - Llanio line from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth.   Does anyone have memories of the big snow in 1947 - or who had family members involved in the rescue, or who were marooned on the train. If so please do contact me off-list.   Does anyone know or have any of the following in their families (all from Aberystwyth I think, but not sure about Driver Phillips and Fireman Lucas. I am especially interested in Ms Harries, the "lady guard" on the train marooned in a snowdrift / or marooned in Lampeter.  Versions of the adventure vary.   Driver R. 0. Williams Penparciau Fireman,E. T. Hughes, Penparciau Lady guard Gladys Harries, then of South Road, Aber.   Driver William James and Fireman A. T. C Evans  - rescue attempt train Driver J. Phillips and Fireman T W. Lucas – second rescue attempt train   [Info above from Cambrian News, and Welsh Gazette]   Apparently, according to a ballad written in the 1970s, the stranded passengers played cards and sang hymns ....    Thanks   Jen

    3. Hello Bob I saw this question of yours - and I'm not sure if you are following Rebecca Shears - or if you want the family with Martha, Sarah etc as children. They are not the same families as William and Elizabeth Richards and their children including the ones you mentioned are living in Coedcanlas in the 1841 and 1851 census - so the marriage of a William Richards (wid) to Rebecca Shears in Pembroke St Michael on 5th April 1836 is very probably a different William. As Elizabeth is shown as born Lawrenny I think her marriage is William Richards and Elizabeth Garrett married 28th Oct 1820 in Lawrenny. I you need the census details let me know and I'll send it offlist Bye for now Pat In message <96D7BB0DF346414D85C1757E88E16B07@RobertPC>, robertgascoigne <robertgascoigne@cox.net> writes >Hello List > > I am seeking clarification on Who William Richards married beside's Rebecca >Shears . 3. Dear Lynne, Try Rhos Hundred......alphabetically, from Burton through to Walwyn's Castle. There is no Bateman/Dawkins marriage listed in the pre-1813 marriages for Rhos Hundred. Most of the area's marriage records start in the 1700's, though Steynton marriages are from 1637. John Bateman 1712 is the earliest Bateman shown and John Dawkins is the earliest of that surname at Steynton in 1662. In the female records Margaret Bateman in 1605? married H.....B......at Haverfordwest St. Mary...ref. HPR2/1 p.29... which reference you could acquire from Haverfordwest Records Office, though the identity of H. B. would seem to be unknown. The only Dawkins female reference is in 1801. Regards. If so take a look at the free index at www.cenquest.co.uk and from there you will be able to see who lived in which parish.
