    3. Looking at that Book on Cillgerran that was mentioned on the List,I can see no reference to my Ancestors Thomas HUMPHREYS who married Elizabeth LLEWELLIN [born about 1770 in Eglwyswrw,Pembs;]at Cillgerran on the 24 May 1794. Their Daughter Ann HUMPHREYS,[1802-1872]married to John BOWEN,[1802-1865] at Cardigan in 1828. They were my 4 x great, grandparents. Does anyone know if the Cilggerran Registers have been Indexed please? Thomas HUMPHREYS was born about 1770, and could be the son of another of that same name, who married Elizabeth EVAN,on the 23 october 1767 at Cillgerran. Many Thanks, and Happy Christmas. Graham. 3. Hello Listers, I have now completed my revision and update of my website on Welsh Chapels and Churches. Please see http://www.welshchapelsandchurches.org/ I trust you like the site and are now able more easily to find your way around. I recommend that you read the Site Map which shows how the website is laid out. You will find that there is now a Search facility within the website, which should find most of what you are looking for, if of course the photo is on the website. I am most grateful to Jeff Coleman, Gareth Hicks, Jennie Newman and Deric John for looking over the site for me and offering suggestions. My best wishes, Jill

    3. Well, my earliest Picton ancestor was John Picton, sloopman of Cosheston, who was buried in 1815 - perhaps this was his boat! This list may like to know that the International Society of Genetic Genealogy will have a Stand for three days at WDYTYA end of February 2010, next door to Family Tree DNA in the new DNA Area. If any members from Dyfed (Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire) will be attending - then I will be very pleased to make your acquaintance. Stand No. 528 on what looks like a Tithe Map plot of Olympia Hall. Best regards and thanks for all the pictures John. Any more of this area of Pembrokeshire much appreciated. 3. Just thought of an earlier group, this one in Pembroke. Samuel LEVI married Mary BLEAR in Bristol in 1765 and their grand-daughter Mary Anne MAKEIG married my Simon DAVIES of Penbryn, who was a surgeon in Cardigan town. I was told that Samuel LEVI and his brother Moses came from Frankfurt-on-Maine, Germany, via London. They are thought to have joined other Jewish families in Haverfordwest PEM. There is quite a history to this group, and one of them may have set up a bank which survived until c.1826. In Wales, the University of Oxford was seen as an academic pinnacle of achievement and there is a long association of the University with Wales. Indeed Oxford is one of the few English cities having a distinctive Welsh name (Rhydychen). The connexions of Jesus College with Wales is particularly close. See http://www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/history/welsh.php When I was there in the early 1970s the place teemed with Welshmen. There is even an Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir in the city (although most members are English). 3. I have also found the new bmd searches on Ancestry very useful. However, there is a (not altogether surprising) feature which I find both amusing and a little irritating, and that is to do with their "hints" which appear if you work on a tree uploaded to the Ancestry site. When you have found a birth death or marriage by another route (say, freeBMD) and enter it for that person, up pops the same information as a hint! Thanks very much, Ancestry. But, with the arrival of the death indexes, if you can get the birth date of an individual, and they have died in the period after date of birth became recorded on the death certificate, up pops the death record as a hint straight away, no searching required! Thanks very much, Ancestry (this time not ironic thanks). This is a real boon if (like me) you are looking for Williams, Thomas, Davies, etc. etc., in Llanelli. 3. I just wanted to thank Dai for the information he posted on Dec. 4 about the more recent Ancestry.com death records now including 1916 to 2005. With that information I took the opportunity to look up the death date of one of my ancestors, Mary Ann Susannah Josephine Williams, who I had supposed died around 1912 or so, shortly after an operation. She lived until 1947! That has been a perplexing question in my family for years! Thank you for the information Dai. Lea

    3. Lynne As a matter of general interest, these boarding schools can sometimes still be around and hold records of value. When I was trying to work out what became of my great grandmother's brother's family, school records helped. He (Rev John Thomas 1843-1924) was from the Llanfihangel genau'r glyn area, of farming stock, but somehow got a master's degree at Oxford in 1872 and became a vicar, ending up at Laugharne (which I visited last April and, to my surprise and delight, found a stone plaque on the inside wall of the old church in memory of him and his wife). His two sons I found at a school in England in the 1891 census (St John's) and a quick Google found the school. The secretary of the Old Johnian Society kindly emailed me records, which included not only interesting detail of their school careers but a few clues as to what happened afterward, through to the 1950s! Anyway, my message is that school records can be useful and may be surprisingly accessible from afar. I found the same in respect of the children of another of my great grandmother's siblings, who lived in Borth, but whose children went to Llandovery College.
