    3. Dear David, You omitted the names and ages of your gggrandfather and gggrandmother, but I presume one surname is Bowen. The marriage certificate should show their fathers' names and occupations at least.....can you also provide those please? I also presume they moved to Glamorganshire some time after their marriage, for your original request to be aimed at Glamorganshire. The dramatic Pembrokeshire coastal scenery at Whitesands Bay and Ramsey Island in the far west of Wales (ten pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in October 2001. 2. The cathedral-like remains of the old Ynyscedwyn Ironworks, at Glanrhyd, Ystradgynlais in the county of Breconshire (one picture). This feature was one of the very first shown on 'Images of Wales', back in November 1997. As usual, these webpages will be displayed on my website for one week. 'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm After viewing the Retrospectives, please explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your own Retrospective requests. 1. [Dyfed] William John Jones, Vicar at Eglwyswrw
    2. Mary Beth Adams
    3.   Hello Listers, I am looking for someone who may know something about William John during his time at Eglwyswrw. I am not sure when he was the Vicar there.  He was born about 1909 in Carmarthenshire, probably in Pontyberem.  I was told by a cousin of his that he was a Vicar.  The cousin told me William was married, but they did not have any children.  He could not remember William's wife's name.  I am hoping someone via the church or an older resident will know her, whether they remained in the area and could they possibly be buried at the church cemetery. Someone told me of a Mr. David Jenkins who was quite knowledgeable about local history.  Is he still about? Regards, Mary Beth Adams

    3. Dear Yvonne If in future you are unable to find someone on the census in a particular year, try looking at the FREE index at www.cenquest.co.uk This is one of the reasons I transcribed the census, so people who may otherwise be lost due to poor transcriptions have a better chance of being spotted. Edward Harries is there in Llandissilio in 1841. Best Wishes Sylvia ................................................................. 3. Hi again Yvonne! The CCED extractions stop at 1835. This date was set because from that point details are available in the annually published Clergy List and, from 1858, Crockford's Clerical Directory. Of more use to you, however, would be the ordination papers for Edward Harries, held in the National Library of Wales. As late as the 19th century these should be complete for St David's. Typically these papers give details of ordination sponsors, education etc and, possibly of more interest to you, would give details of baptism (obviously a requirement for ordination), parents etc. There will be two sets, one for Edwards ordination as Deacon 21 Sep 1822 and the other for his ordination to the priesthood 11 Oct 1823. I may well be in the NLW within the next couple of weeks and, if you haven't obtained everything you need by then, I could dig out these ordination papers. 3. I stumbled on this requirement over Christmas when I was looking for something on the Carmarthen Archives page: http://www.carmarthenshire.gov.uk/english/education/archives/pages/home.aspx "The [Carmarthenshire] archive service, together with the archive services of West Glamorgan, Swansea University, Pembrokeshire, and Powys are introducing a Reader's Ticket from the 1st January 2010." 3. Dear Yvonne, To add to Paul's reply, Francis Green's WWHR under Pemb. Parsons shows Edward Harries from 1824 until July, 1850 when he probably died, as his successor was a Rev. Thomas Harries from August, 1850. I have a Henry Harries born Llandissilio who married Mary Devonald in 1828 at Nevern ...he was shown as Henry Harry on the marriage index, but in other entries he is shown as Harries and that is the surname his children bore. Henry did not name a child Edward...and I must confess I have never looked too far for his parentage, but if you find the Rev. Edward's details I would like to know if there is a connection. Under "Bryndysil, Llandisilio West" Major Francis Jones wrote "A large house near the parish church at the north end of Llandisilio village, marked as Bryndissil on Colby's Map 1831, In 1847 it was the home of Reverend Edward Harries. In 1862 it was the home of Reverend Thomas Harries, clerk, who is said to have built Bryndysil as his residence, and it contains some remnants of ancient stone work taken from Llandisilio church. It is now owned by Mr. Skeel Harries, who has sold Bryndysil house, but retains the land which he farms. Refs, RCAM, 1925, P.160. It seems as if the original dwelling was demolished, or at least partially rebuilt Major Jones died in 1993 so this would have been written and refer to a time before 1993. 3. Hi Yvonne! As promised, this is the information which I extracted for the CCED regarding Edward Harries - parish spellings as in the original documents. Edward HARRIES Ordained Deacon 21 Sep 1822 by Thomas BURGESS, Bishop of St David's Licensed by the same bishop as Stipendiary Curate at Crinow, Pembs 22 Sep 1822 at £40 per annum Licensed as Stipendiary Curate at Llandissilio, Pembs 15 Nov 1822 at £40 per annum Ordained Priest 11 Oct 1823 by Thomas BURGESS Collated 9 Jul 1824 to the Vicarage of Llandissilio, on the death of John EVANS by Bishop Thomas BURGESS. This means that the Bishop was the patron of the living. Edward HARRIES was also licensed as Stipendiary Curate at Egremont, Carms 1 Nov 1832 at £40 per annum. This is, of course, only 1.4 miles from Llandissilio. Are you suggesting that this was a different person to the Rev Edward Harries whom the 1836 Ecclesiastical Directory states became vicar of Llandysilio in 1824? http://tinyurl.com/y99qp2z. Or the Rev Edward Harries MA, of Llandysilio, Narberth, who was a committee member of the Cambrian Archaeological Society in 1847? http://tinyurl.com/yccv9oy Or are you leaving that particular question open? Although the latter reference suggests that he was a graduate, he doesn't seem to be mentioned in the published lists for either Oxford or Cambridge (not that these are invariably complete or invariably accurate). Maybe he had attended a different university. There might be more clues to his career either in the Llandysilio parish records, or in the St David's diocesan records, or in the other proceedings of the Cambrian Archaeological Society. There could be various reasons why you didn't find him in the 1841 census, e.g. accidental omission from the schedule, indexing errors, absence from the county at the date when the census was taken, or the holding of an additional post elsewhere. 3. Hi Yvonne! I was responsible for extracting the Welsh dioceses for the Clergy of the Church of England database. Not all of the data has been up-loaded yet to the main CCED on line web site but I'll get back to you on the Rev Edward Harries and, in case anyone else is interested, copy it to the list.
