William James, mason, s,of John James, labourer, married Ann Morris, d. of William Morris, labourer, both"of age", at Letterstone Parish Church, July 15th. 1847. William's residence at time of marriage, is Clawdd=cam, Llanreithan, Ann's residence is Bill Hook. I am seeking help/advice in locating the birth of Wm. and/or Ann. Is any list member linked to these families? Reuben Living in hope
Dear Anna and Gareth Brilliant! Thanks loads for your help. I think you're right, Anna - the place is Pwll rhyd pwnau, or at least the enumerator's version of that! And it also seems likely that Edward Mainwaring worked at Brynhenllys colliery. Thanks for the excellent links to the map and to the information about the colliery. It has really helped to provide a context for Edward's life there in 1841. Thank you to both of you again. Hi again Moni I've now found the place at www.old-maps.co.uk on the 1888 Brecknockshire map, where it's shown as Pwll rhyd pwnau. OS Coordinates are approximately SN748124, the coordinates shown at old-maps are 275000 212400. Hi Moni It looks to me like Rhyd y frynnu, though I can't find that on a modern map. It's also diffcult to make it out from the enumerator's walk since he seems to have wandered about a bit. However he is definitely at the south eastern end of Quarter bach, somewhere near Ystradown. There was a colliery at nearby Brynhenllys, opened in 1792 - see http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/cbaresrep/pdf/079/07903007.pdf Hope this helps Anna At 18/01/2010 13:41 U+0000, A Spell In Time wrote: >Hi everyone > >I'm hoping that someone can help with deciphering a place name in the parish >of Llangadog in the 1841 census. > >My Edward Mainwaring was recorded as Edward Manry, working as a collier in >the parish of Llangadock, I can't make out his address properly. Mervyn Do you know any more about the family? I have a David JONES born about 1840 in Llanfair CGN. Now I do not know if this was Llanfair Orllwyn or Llanfair Clydogau. He married a Rachel - born about 1840 in Cellan CGN and they had a daughter Elizabeth born about 1867 again in Cellan. She was my great grandmother - married to John EVANS born about 1862 Conwil Caio. Any connection? Hi everyone I'm hoping that someone can help with deciphering a place name in the parish of Llangadog in the 1841 census. My Edward Mainwaring was recorded as Edward Manry, working as a collier in the parish of Llangadock, I can't make out his address properly. It looks like Pwyllrhyd uprymu. Does this ring a bell with anyone? The 1841 census reference is: Class: HO107; Piece 1386; Book: 15; Civil Parish: Llangadock; County: Carmarthenshire; Enumeration District: 10; Folio: 40; Page: 10; Line: 4; GSU roll: 464312 Edward Manry (Mainwaring) is on the right.hand side of the page. Does anyone know which colliery he was likely to be working at? With many thanks and best wishes Moni
hi tommy, i have no interest in this family but i have found that Rachel Senior's maiden name is Davies. David and Rachel and children are in Conwil Caio with rachel's mother also named Rachel a widow(listed as Widower in census 1881) David and rachel either married in September quarter 1860 in Lampeter 11b 48a or in Carmarthen June quarter 1863 11a 877 but i think more likely the former. other children born to david and rachel are Stephen(abt 1862) John abt 1874 rachel abt 1875 Mary abt 1877 and william abt 1880 hope this helps john in ireland ________________________________ From: Tommy (Dyfed) <dyfed@tommye.plus.com> To: MERVYN Davies <merv.davies@virginmedia.com>; DYFED@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 18 January, 2010 17:36:46 Subject: Re: [Dyfed] JONES: Llanfair Orllwyn, Cards. Dear Andy This is a tricky one. I presume you have seen James Jenkins in the 1841 living with George and Susanna Jenkins and family at Tanners Row, Prendergast. James is shown as a Smith and aged 25 and as you know the 1841 rounded adult ages down to the nearest 5 or 0. 1851 we see James now married to Ann living Main Street, Prendergast, with children Thomas, Elizabeth and Susanna. James is shown as a Smith and born in Uzmaston, Haverfordwest, while Ann and the children are shown as born in Prendergast. James is now aged 37 and Ann is 38. So if that is correct then she was born around 1813 not 1821. Back to 1841 looking at all the Ann Bowen's in the area in that year. I see a 25 year old Ann working as a female servant in Gloucester Terrace, Haverfordwest St Martins for a Margaret Phillips and family. Looking at all the Bowen's in Prendergast in 1841, I find a 65 year old Elizabeth Bowen living at the Kilns. She was a lodging house keeper. There were only lodgers at home on census day. There was also a John and Mary Bowen living in Prendergast, John 65 and Mary 70. There was a 9 year old Mary Bowen working as a servant for Thomas Lewis the Grocer in Prendergast and lastly there was a tailor named Thomas Bowen aged 25 in the house of George James also a tailor. I have looked at all the William Bowens that were in Pembrokeshire on the 1841 census and none of them have an occupation which even slightly relates to the one you say your William had. I am not sure if it will help but as James and Ann called their first daughter Elizabeth, a William Bowen married a Elizabeth Banner in Prendergast in 1793. There is also a William Bowen marrying a Anne Ridgard in 1804 in Prendergast. I hope the above will at least give you something to think about. Best Wishes Sylvia ................................................................. Dear All, I am looking for some inspiration on the above lady my GGG Grandmother Anne Bowen born approx 1821 in Prendergast. She married James Jenkins a Blacksmith in 1842 and they are both shown as being from Prendergast. Anne's father is shown as William Bowen whose occupation is Paper making. I can not find them (Anne or William) in the 1841 Census at all. I was wondering if anybody had come across them or had any ideas? All the Best, Andy _________________________________________________________________ Do you have a story that started on Hotmail? Tell us now http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/195013117/direct/01/
To Sue in Suffolk: I have a lot of Morgans in Llanedi Parish, including a line of William Morgans: William (?-1786), William (?-1820), William (1756-1835), William (1787-1844), William (1814-?), William (1844-?). Most of these lived on the farms Tyllwyd, Pant-y-ffynnon, and Nant-y-gro. Other (related) Morgans have lived at Penllwyn and Plasnewydd, including my great-great grandfather Lewis Morgan. These Morgans were also related to Bowen, Thomas, Price, and other families in Llanedi Parish. There are still descendants of the William Morgans living in Llanedi Parish today.
