Good Morning... In Today's Alexandria Town Talk (Alexandria, La) the following article appeared on Page D-3.... ==== Dyess to seek new term Saying he wants to finishn the work he started three year ago, the Rev. B. G. Dyess announced his re-election campaign for the Louisiana Senate Tuesday. The election is next October. A Democrat, Dyess represents District 29. Dyess made the announcement on the steps of the Rapides Parish Courthouse, where he was surrounded by numerous local officials there to show support. Several of them gave brief sppeches endorsing Dyess, describing him as a man of integrity who has worked hard to improve the district. The endorsements came not only from other Democrats such as Alexandria Mayor Ned Randolph, but also from Republicans such as former Congresman Clyde Holloway. Dyess kept the crowd laughing, especially with jokes about the compliments he had received from the other speakers. "You don't believe all that," Dyess told the crowd. "And if I didn't know it was true, I wouldn't believe it either." Dyess later quipped that the endorsements were "the best one-minute speeches I've ever heard." Turning serious, Dyess said the Legislature and Gov. Mike Foster have accomplished a lot in the past three years. He predicted Foster will be re-elected and said the outlook for Louisiana's future is good. "we have a lot going for us in this state," Dyess said. "...I think the state is getting a new image. Things are looking up." Dyess said two of his priorities have been improvements to eeducation and roats. He said the Legislature has done a lot to omprove education. He said teachers have been given state pay raises the past three years and more money is being spent on classroom equipment and materials. There has also been a lot of road overlay and bridge repairs the past three years, Dyess said. Dyess added that Foster has promosed to four-lane Highway 28 West from Alexandria to Leesville. Admitting he has not introduced many bills during his term, Dyess said each legislator should be limited to introducing 12 bills. He said that would reduce the time the Legislature spends on "frivolous" issues. Calling gambling an "evil creeping over our land," Dyess also sia dhe wil "do all I can" to fight it. ======= B. G.
