HI.... This is from the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, Alexandria, La. March 11, 1998 (wednesday) By Melissa Gregory; Staff Reporter Tuesday night's event at the Rapides Parish Coliseum was a fund-raiser for state Sen. B. G. Dyess, but it could have been mistaken for a Louisiana State University at Alexandria rally. With Gov. Mike Foster as the guest speaker, members of the LSUA Student Government Association busily handed out "4-year LSUA NOW!" buttons to people waiting in the chillly temperatures to enter the Coliseum. Robert Cavanaugh, LSUA's chancellor, said the buttons would keep the issue in the public eye. Approximately 1,500 people paid $25 apiece for the chance to eat barbecue and to chat with DYESS. In addition to Foster, other state and local public officials like Speaker of the House Hunt Downer and Senate President Randy Ewing trekked to Alexandria for the event. Before the program, Dyess siad he was ready to run for another term. "I'm prepared," said Dyess. "I plan to run again. I know of no reason why I shouldn't". Dyess said he has heard from many people who have urged him to run again. He also said he was "flattered and honored" that people have asked him to run again. The senator said he has attracted different segments of the population. When asked about the Republican governonor's presence at a fund-raiser for a Democratic candidate, Dyess said it's "no conflict at all." In fact, he said that proves he appeals to a wide variety of voters. "In my own campaigns, I hav always had this cross-section," he said. In front of the Coliseum, LSUA supporters were rapidly running out of buttons. Shayne Bertrand, a member of the LSUA SGA, said this event was a perfect opportunity to hand out the buttons advocating that the two-year school be elevated to a four-year institution. He said Foster and a majority of the public supports the school's transition. However, he said it is the state Board of Education that opposes it. "I really don't understand what the opposition is," said Bertrand. "It would be good for the area financially." Bertrand said the school already draws students from the central Louisiana area. A four-year university might appeal to more people, he said. "We're sending our best and our brightest other places to go to school," he said. "They don't always come back. It's real detrimental to the area. It leaves a big hole in the middle of the state for higher education." Foster, who sported one of the buttons on his jacket, said the issue will be studied, but not during the upcoming special session. "This year we're not going to put them into that mix," said Foster. However, the governor said officials would take "a serious look and see if it's practical." "We understand the advantage of having a four-year college in an area that really has no other four year public school," he said. The governor said some of his goals for the special session include discussion of a new system for community and tehnical colleges, the reorganization of the state's Department of Transportation and Development, some "pretty tough" litter laws and local bills. Foster also said the session probably will deal with a bill that would restrict those between the ages of 18 and 21 from going into bars. He said that might include looking at lowering the state's blood alcohol level to .08 "because the feds are doing it." "A lot of odds and ends. These sessions are cleanup sessions," said Foster. "We have to ratify the New Orleans casnio contract or we'll be sued for the next three years in court if we don't because they've lived up to their obligation." ========== For those of you who do not know...there is a DYESS relative that is a Louisiana State Senator. He is B. G. Dyess, the son of J. B. (Joseph) Dyess, Grandson of Edmond Dyess, Great Grandson of Thomas D. Dyess, GG Grandson of George Dyess, and GGG grandson of John Dyess (the main *Papa* in Barnwell, SC) ========== Kaite.... http://www.kaite.com/ (webpage)

Good morning... I have found the following site.... http://www.rootsweb.com/~mswayne/ When you get to the site, there is a lot of information; however, there are a couple of school pictures that I think you will find interesting.. Click on the Denham School, ca 1910 and there is a school picture with several DYESS children in the picture. I have looked, copied the picture, and think I have about identified the DYESS relatives... There are also McIlwains and Nicholas in the picture..... There is another picture of the Mozingo School Class of 1908... I didn't see any DYESS on there; however, there are other surnames that might be of interest to some of you .... allied lines.... If any of you find things on the web that you think the group would be interested in, please post the message.... Thanks!! kaite... http://www.kaite.com/

He was assigned to active duty at Norfolk 8 November 1940. He was killed in action at Namur Island, Marshall Islands, 2 February 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Dyess was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his daring and forceful leadership in the face of fierce opposition on the day of his death. USS DYESS DD-880 Gearing Class Dyess was launched 26 January 1945 by Consolidated Steel Corp., Orange, Texas; sponsored by Mrs. A. J. Dyess, widow of Lieutenant Colonel Dyess; and commissioned 21 May 1945, Commander R. L. Fulton in command. She was reclassified DDR-880 18 March 1949. After her shakedown cruise and conversion to a radar picket destroyer, Dyess sailed from Norfolk 7 November for occupation duty in the Far East. She returned to San Diego 16 December 1946, and on 6 January 1947, got underway for the east coast, arriving at Norfolk 28 January. She served on local training cruises until August of that year when she sailed to Rio de Janiero, Brazil, to escort President Harry Truman embarked in Missouri BB-63 as far as Norfolk when he transferred to the Presidential yacht Williamsburg AGC-369 which Dyess escorted to Washington, D. C. Dyess arrived at Newport, R.I., 27 September 1947 for local training operations. After a tour of duty with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean from 29 October to 14 February 1948, she returned to her home port of Norfolk. Until the end of 1958 Dyess made nine tours of duty with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean, patrolling to preserve peace and engaging in excerises with NATO forces. She also sailed on two midshipman cruises, one to southern Europe in the summer of 1948 and one to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the summer of 1951. The remainder of her service has been as varied as her capabilities. She has acted as plane guard during the qualifying of pilots in carrier operations and has joined in hunter-killer excercises, amphibious training, and large-scale flett exercises. She assisted in the evacuation of American nationals from Suez during the tense situation which developed during her 1956 Mediterranean cruise. In the summer of 1958 she joined in strenghtening the free world's defenses with NATO operations in northern Europe. Dyess operated along the east coast and off Cuba in 1959, and on 25 July arrived at Charleston, S. C., her new home port. On 29 January 1960 she sailed on her tenth deployment to the Mediterranean. Dyess returned to Charleston in August, and in October entered Charleston Naval Ship Yard where she remained until the end of 1960. The Dyess was stricken on 1 Oct 1979 and transferred to Greece in July 1981.

I did see this "Phereby Thompson" on first page of hits: The name is Phereby Thompson (spelling of first name is different but thought this might be a sister or something of Phearby Thompson's father) If I can look up another name or you have more exact dates or names for any marriages to 1850 in GA , I will look up for you. Good Morning... Well..I have started getting some neat responses in from the announcement on the DYESS reunion.... There are some that are already making their plans to come...... It might be a good idea to start posting our information here on the listing so that others can look at it, and, add to it...and...share the information... I am getting my pictures in order so I can have them available at the reunion...so they can be copied at the reunion for those that might want copies..... My oldest DYESS picture is of EDMOND (EDMUND) D. DYESS and his wife MARGARET MATHIS..... Edmond was my GREAT GRANDFATHER...... Edmond was the son of Thomas D. Dyess and Nancy Jenkins..... who was the son of George W. DYESS..... Thanks.... kaite... http://www.kaite.com/
