    1. "I Am the DYESS"
    2. Hi Cousins... And...here is another poem that Don sent to me.... Aren't we PROUD!!!!!! === I Am The DYESS [Image] I am your Lady, you once called me home The foundation that took you away... I am the body, turned the boy to a man >From me, you shall never stray. I was the one you cursed in your sleep I was the one you caressed I was the one that you reveled upon It was I that you wore on your chest. You have all loved me at one time or another Although way back then you may not have known But now you come here from lands all around To reminisce me and call me your own It is I who is honored by you one and all I who will never forget........ Those strong fearless faces, stood bravest and tall I love you and have no regret...... Ive gone out to sea now, for heres my final rest You are my Sailors. And I love you best Yes I am your Lady. The reason youre here. The DYESS 880. For me shed only one tear I am the Dyess and I thank you all for what you have done for me. Although I am gone now, know after all, it is your hearts that beat in my sea. Thank you Ernie T. Pomeroy, Susan Fiorentino February 21, 1998

    1. The DYESS ship....
    2. Hi cousins... Here is another poem about the DYESS ship that Don sent to me... Thanks!!! kaite (Carolyn DYESS Bales) === That "DDR" [Image] Many ships there are both near and far But none stands out like that "DDR" So trim and clean like an elegant lady Her name the "DYESS", her number "880" The crew stands by both day and night To keep her trim and ready to fight The engines humming a tune which is steady As all of the spaces show they are ready The bridge signals a full speed ahead The turbines spin faster with the steam they are fed Radarmen, Sonarmen search for a pip While others are swabbing and painting the ship The cooks and mess cooks get up the chow While rough seas or smooth are cut by her bow The captain on the bridge gives his commands As order by order is done by all hands Team work is the answer - if there's a job to do As shown on the "DYESS" with her top notch crew She pitches and rolls in the deep blue sea Protecting America to keep her free Louis E. 1. Colonel Edwin Dyess
    2. HI Cousins... Here is a poem that Don Marler (our DYESS cousin) sent to me. I want to share it with the group. Cousins....we have some great historical figures in our lines!!! kaite... (Carolyn Dyess Bales) Here is the poem: The Last Command [Image] When you speak of heros and legends, There's many, through out our land Colonel Dyess stands tall, among heros He was killed, at his last command At the Marshaall Islands, his troops stormed the beachhead, The fighting became hand to hand He led an attack, on a bunker That victory, was his last command The marines have many traditions, The officers are an elite Corp band Colonel Dyess, was true to that creedo, To the end, at his last command His widow was summoned to Washington, The Medal of Honor, was placed in her hand, Her husband, and father of her children; Had died, at his last command We who survived those battles Know it cost us many a good man A toast to Colonel Dyess A legend, at his last command Stand firm in your love of our country Be ready to lend her a hand, Be proud of our heritage and heros Who died at their last command. *In memory of Lt. Col Aquilla James Dyess, Medal of Honor, Commanding officer 1st Btl, 24th Rgt. 4th Marine Div. -- KIA Marshall Islands Feb 1944 Copyright Carl Dearborn Avon Park Florida 1998

    1. Bits and Pieces of DYESS NEWS
    2. Good Morning Cousins... Since the family reunion (May 1st) life has been running me quickly...<smile> One of our relatives, Edmond L. Dyess (aka as Ted) in Odessa, Texas, is very ill and is dying of cancer... I have been there to take his brother, my dad (Oscar C. Dyess) to visit him. Ted loved for me to tell him about the family reunion and he is encourging me to find out all I can about the DYESS name. I also do contract work for the Federal Government and it just so happened that they have been short handed and I have been working there as well. Now, I'm in Greensboro, NC, and life is slowing down a bit and I think I can get caught up (did I say that???) <grin> at least get some of the genealogy into some sort of order.... That's a try, right???? First of all the family reunion was a great success...... And....please Cousin, put it in your calanders.... FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY EVERY YEAR!!!!! We will have the reunion.... I met wonderful lovely cousins I'd never met before..... I met Pricilla McCormick at the airport and knew her right away!!!! She looks like some of Uncle Jim Dyess' daughters!!! she is a DYESS!!!! Chuck (Charles) Dyess....ahhhhh....he is the computer genius amongst us... He had his notebook computer there and entered data and helped people get their right connections.... A wonderful Success Story had come from this listing and the computer!!!!! there is a cousin (James Dyess) who lives in Fla.... I've been communicating with James for a little while. He found me on one of the rootsweb things...James had NEVER met any of his DYESS cousins...and...he was excited to find me. I have talked to him *live* on the phone...and...we both were excited about that... Because Chuck has put the information on the homepage.... and.... I had posted the information here...James went there...and...James has FAMILY!!! He is connected to us... James and I are trying to work out a place where we can meet while we both are travelling...but...I'm on I/85 here in Greensboro....and....he is going to be on I/95 heading from Fla to NY to see his daughter.... but...we will make it one day.. He is planning on attending the next reunion... Chuck: He is going to try and stop by and see you....<smile> Don Marler.... a DYESS cousin....was almost totally responsible for the success of the reunion. Don is a historian, a very committed person on finding his roots; but, most important, he loves to help the rest of us!!!!! He has researched and written several books.... We had John Dyess from Ark there who was so excited to see so many DYESS people.... They had NEVER seen so many DYESS people.... On the return trip from Odessa, Texas, Daddy and I stopped (only briefly) at the DYESS Air Force Base, Texas.... and...went thru one of the memorials for Colonel DYESS.... My dad was so impressed by this great man!!! Also...Colonel Dyess had written a book : The Dyess Story...... Don Marler, our cousin, has reprinted the book. If you have not read it, I would suggest that you contact Don for a copy.... It's a book that you just can't put down..... Thanks cousins for everything!!!!! We have a great history and a great NAME!!!!! kaite.. (Carolyn DYESS Bales)

    3. Hello to Dyess researchers, I've just signed on and am looking for my DYE ancestors. I've found them called everything from Dee to Dew to Daw to Day to Dias. I've been able to trace back as far as my g-g-grandfather, Martin Die/Dye, b. 1800 in GA. Names in Warren co., GA, of other Dyes were Abraham, Abel, David, Thomas, John, and William. These latter two are the most common names in the family. I believe my Martin may originate from the Richmond co., VA, family sired by an earlier Martin Die. This man's descendants wound up in Warren co., NC, and then moved south to GA. They intermarried with the Jacksons, the Hopkins, the Kellys, and the Mayfields. Does this match any Dyess family in GA? 1. Hello.....
    2. kaite
    3. Hello DYESS cousins.... I know I have been quiet for a few days... but... trying to catch my breath... First of all...we had a wonderful and successful DYESS family reunion, May 1st and May 2nd... Out of the SIX Dyess brothers (Barnwell, SC).... There were FOUR lines represented at the reunion. The fifth line, Don Marler, has been in contact with (The Thomas Dyess line)... and... they will be here next year. The other line, John Dyess, I don't have a contact for them. Do any of you have a John Dyess contact ???????? I think they settled from SC down to Fla.... Chuck Dyess (George Dyess line) from Georgia brought his notebook computer and he was the STAR of the reunion. People gathered around him and he would put their information in and then would tell them how they were connected......A lot of interest!!!! Friday night, we had about 17 people present. Eveyone brought their material and pictures and we shared back and forth.... There was a lady there from the William Dyess line whose GG Grandmother, Elizabeth Dyess, is also the GG grandmother of George Jones. She has interviewed George Jones.... The one that got the prize for attending for being the fartherest away was Pricillia McCormick from AZ!!!!! SHe is from the Henry Dyess line. We loved her and she loved us!!!! First time we ever met her and her husband. The reunion will be the 1st Saturday in May in 1999....So...please start making plans to attend. The highlight of Saturday was a tour of Uncle Elbert Dyess' museum. Everyone who went really enjoyed it and was impressed at the creativity of this 86 year old man.... Later on this week I will start putting together email addresses that I have and the families that they belong to. That way.. you will have a listing of who is who and can communicate with each other... John Dyess (Christopher Dyess line) was there from Arkansas. He was impressed about the number of DYESS people in one place.... He said it was unusual for them to have that many DYESS people... W. Dan Dyess (an attorney from Natchitoches, La) was there (Christopher Dyess line).... Oh, yes...Saturday at the reunion, we estimated about 150 people present!!!! Stayed tuned..... Like Johnny Carson would say, "There's More to come" <smile> Cousin.... kaite... (Carolyn Dyess Bales)

James Franklin DICE (any spelling) supposedly was somewhere near Alexandria, possibly in Leesville, when he was said to have died in July of 1903. He and his wife Hattie had a daughter named Eve born there March 28, 1901. James Franklin DICE - DIES was a ventriloquist in a wagon show. He also played the fiddle. There may have been newspaper ads in the area concerning his wagon show. I certainly would be grateful to get any information concerning him. He was known to sign his name J.F.DIES, Frank DICE, and Jim Dies, and the DICE could have been spelled any number of ways. While at the reunion, in your studies in LA, if you find anything at all about this man, my grandfather, I would very much like to hear from you. Will you please make a printout of my letter and tuck it into your research notes? I would greatly appreciate any help. With Sincere Thanks, Jean

    3. Good Morning Cousins.... This is just the last reminder about the DYESS reunion here in Alexandria, La.. this week end.... But...I wanted to make one last Pitch!!! <smile> Don Marler has secured a room at the Roadway Inn for us to meet at 6PM on Friday, May 1st. This is for everyone and anyone who is interested in the family history..... We will have photocopy availability!!!!!!! Don, I have that item finalized!!!!! I have spent a lot of time getting that part done.... and... I think everyone will be pleased at the results!!!!!! I talked to *Martha* at Roadway Inn....and...made one last neogitation power struggle...about their copying machine...<smile> Back two weeks ago...they were going to charge us 15 cents per copy; therefore, I had another option lined up... HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This morning Martha said..... that if we bring our own paper, and, if they are not overly busy...they will copy the material we want for free..... And...the worse possible thing that could happen...is they do charge us some money for copying if they are busy..... But..Don, she has your name and my name...and...she is to leave instructions stating the above.... Don: I will bring 2 rhems of paper and can bring more if you think..... This past week end, we had a SMITH reunion and Barbara and I met at my house with a new cousin from Greenville, Tx... We were going to work on family group sheets; share material, etc... But...we found there was more than expected; therefore, we all three went to Office Depot and spent about 4 hours in copying material...... We each gave and received years of research and certified copies of material... and... we each spent about $25.00 each in doing it....So...getting together and sharing information....works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone gains from it......... So....Dyess people and allied lines... Please consider coming to this reunion and let's make this the beginning of the best thing that we can for our family history.... It's more than a tree....It's HISTORY that will be left for our GGGGGGGGG grandchldren...<smile> We have some growing pains on this one.... but... we are just beginning...and...we will refine the process..... So...just bare with us and help with the refinning process.... There are some things that you can do to help and that's start calling and letting everyone that you know about the reuion... You know relatives that we have no way of knowing.... Also....if you cannot come, would you please contact me, give me your information, and let me have it there to present to the group and I will be more than happy to share back with you what transpired during the meeting!!!!! I have been busy working on family group sheets bringing all I can up to date to present at the Friday night meeting... Also, I have started copying pictures adn I will have them avilable for you all to view at the reunion and the will copy out pretty good on the photocopy machine there. I will have them in a book; labeled, etc... I will also have a group of *Mystery* pictures...where everyone can look at them and see if you can help identify... I did this at the Smith reunion yesterday and got about 4 identified...that I had no clue who was.... If you have any questions, please call or write email.... If I am not home, please leave a message on my machine and I will call you back.... I will be checking email as often as I can and trying to get back with you quickly.... My phone number is: 318-449-1942.... Email: kaite@kaite.com or KaiteKaite@aol.com Send to either...and...I will read.... Thanks Cousins!!!! kaite.. (Carolyn DYESS Bales)
