    1. MISSISSIPPI-DEMPSEY DYESS
    2. Gayle
    3. Good evening, I am new to the list. My DYESS connections are somewhat distant. My ggrandfather's sister married Dempsey Dyess in Mississippi. Dempsey E. DYESS b. 1826 in MS, (md. 1848) Sarah Ann GRAHAM b.1832 in MS The Sep. 1860 Jasper Co, MS Census shows the following children: Jane DYESS age 11 F (Martha Jane DYESS md. A. GANDY in 1869) Allen W. DYESS age 9 M James M. DYESS age 5 M Sarah A.(Jr.)DYESS age 5 mos. F The 1870 Jasper Co, MS Census shows Sarah as a widow with the following children: Sarah A. DYESS age 38 F Allen W. DYESS age 19 M James M. DYESS age 14 M Abraham DYESS age 12 M Sarah A. DYESS age 10 F md. Joseph G. MUSGROVE, b. FL 1854 John T. DYESS age 7 M Family lore has it that Dempsey DYESS was killed in the Civil War. Also, when his wife Sarah was notified of the death, she "ran through the house screaming and crying until she wore herself down." Sarah Graham DYESS moved her family to Brazos Co, TX around 1876, along with some of her Graham brothers. She is listed in the Brazos Co, TX 1880 census. Two of her sons are also listed in the same Texas census with families. I copied the DYESS page of Strickland's Who Married Whom in Jasper Co., MS. It lists three Dempsey Dyesses. I have combined this info with census info. I will add more to this later. Gayle Turner <gayle@was.net>

    1. Dias.. another way to Spell DYESS
    2. kaite
    3. HI... I got the following message from Walter Murrphy..... Walt: Thanks so much for searching and sharing with us..... Thanks!! kaite... == I subscribe to Ancestry.com I was in one of their data bases "Naturalizations in America and the West Indies". I did a search for Dyess...nothing. Remembering your Georgia info, I searched Dias...bingo! It came up with 6 matches, the most notable were; Aron Dias Fernandes, 26 Feb. 1740. Moses Dias Fernandes, Naturalized at Jamaica 28 Nov. 1750 I made printouts, but you will probably want to go there yourself. The description of the database says; The lords commissioners for Trade and Plantation established the act for naturalizations in the American and West Indidan colonies in 1740. Pursuant to that act, commissioners in the Americas sent records back to England detailing those foreign protestants who were naturalized in the colonies. It was abolished abt 1782 with the commission was dissolved. I hope this is something worthwhile.! Walt Murphy

    1. USS Dyess Christmas Menu 1945
    2. Quite a few folks have asked me for info on this Christmas menu, so I thought I'd post it to the list. I hope that's ok. I'll sweeten the pot with some genealogical info... My connection with the Dyess family is somewhat indirect. My GGM's maiden name was "Dious", a spelling which caused me much grief for awhile. I finally traced her back through a few generations of "Dias'" to a Lud Arnold Dias. Lud's mother was Elizabeth Everitt, the widow of William Dyess (one of the 6 Dyess brothers of SC). After William's death, she had a common-law relationship with Josiah Boyet. It seems that Josiah's wife left him for another man, but Josiah never divorced her. He then took up with the widow Dyess. Their children (I know of at least 2, Lud and Eliza) both had the last name "Dyess", but Lud's surname became spelled Dias for reasons I don't know. I have some more info on the descendants of Lud Arnold Dias. This story is documented in SC court records and recounted in Pam Trammell's book "The Descendants of the Dyess Brothers of Barnwell, South Carolina". It is pure coincidence that my wife's father served on the USS Dyess during WWII while I am the one with the Dyess family connection. Her father, Bailey Evans Wilson was a seaman and died in 1970, so unfortunately I don't really have any interesting stories. However, her family has preserved his copy of the ship's menu from Christmas, 1945 while the ship was stationed in Tokyo harbor. Several folks have asked me for a copy of this menu. My mother-in-law "decoupaged" this menu onto a wooden plaque many years ago, so I don't know how well it will copy, but I will try and let y'all know if I succeed! The text of the menu is as follows: 1st page: Oriental characters (Japanese?) at the top with a life preserver drawn below with a bow to look like a wreath! It says "USS Dyess DD880". Below the life preserver are the words: Christmas Day Menu Tokyo, Japan December 25, 1945 2nd page (reproduced as best I can): CHRISTMAS MENU *********************** ****************** ************* ********** ****** *** * 25 December 1945 Roast Turkey Bread Dressing Mashed Potatoes Giblet Gravy Buttered Corn Pickled Beets Cranberry Sauce Sweet Pickles Ice Cream Pumpkin Pie Candy Nuts Fruit Cake Lemonade Cigarettes Cigars Music By Armed Forces Radio * * * (End of menu) As good as all that sounds to me, I can't begin to imagine how good it must have tasted to those sailors who had done so much and were so far from home. I hope this was interesting to some of you. Paul M. Hendricks, MD

    1. DYESS Explains Reversal on Bill
    2. kaite
    3. The following article appeared in the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, Alexandria, Louisiana, Tuesday, May 12, 1998..... I thought it might be interesting for those of you who cut and keep things for the DYESS family.... DYESS Explains Reversal on Bill Wasn't aware gambling involved By Melissa Gregory Staff reporter A debate was waged Monday night over a bill facing the Louisiana Senate---is it a gambling bill or a tax bill that would fund the state's boll weevil eradication program and the sugar cane industry???? About 50 people gathered at Tunk's Cypress Inn to listen to area senators give their reasons for supporting or not supporting the bill, which passed the House a few weeks ago. The meeting was arranged by state Sen. B. G. Dyess, D-Alexandria. A few weeks ago, Dyess had pledged his support for the bill to local cotton producers. However, he said he was unaware that the bill involved gambling. A staunch foe of gambling, Dyess changed his mind and wanted the meeting so he could explain his reversal to the farmers face to face. Also attending the meeting were Senate President Randy Ewing, D-Quitman; Sen. Noble Ellington, D-Winnsboro; Sen. Mike Smith, D-Winnfield; and Bob Odom commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry. The bill would place a 15 percent tax on slot machines at tracks in Bossier and St. Landry parishes. The tax revenue would be funneled to the boll weevil eradication program, lowering producers' cost per acre for eliminating the pest. Now, producers pay approximately $30 per acre. If passed, the bill would lower their costs to about $15 per acre. Money generated also would help build railroad spurs from central and western Louisiana to sugarcane mills in the south. Supporters of the bill say this would take up to 200 trucks off the state's highways, as well as reduce the cost of production to the farmers. Ewing called the bill a "peculiar concoction." Regardless, Dyess siad he could not support the bill because gambling is "immoral, it's wrong and it's a sin." He said gambling is the culprit behind a rise in divorces and personal bankruptcies. "The last people in the world that I want to see get hurt are the farmers," Said, Dyess. However, he said that he still will oppose the bill, even if it costs him votes. He said he talks to people in his office ruined by gambling every week. Grady Coburn, a consultant to several cotton farmers in the area, said the bill could make or break the industry in central Louisiana. "in the next three years or so, we're fixing to lose all the government support we have for cotton and sugar can," Said Coburn. "If this bill does not pass, we'll quit growing cotton in central Louisiana." Coburn also pointed out that by ridding the area of the boll weevil, farmers would lnot have to use so much pesticide. He said the bill "far surpases" the gambling issue. Odom said he does not consider the bill a gambling bill. Before the Legislature could consider the tax issue, residents near the horse race tracks had to vote on whether or not to allow the slot machines. Of the three elections held for the three tracks in the state, Bossier................ NOTE: the rest of the article does NOT include anything from DYESS in there.... Note: B. G. Dyess is the son of J. B. Dyess, the grandson of Edmund Dyess, the great grandson of Thomas D. Dyess, the great great grandson of George W. Dyess....and...the GGG grandson of John Dyess. Thanks!!! kaite...

    3. Hi... Right now, I'm in Greensboro, NC, where they have USED book havens ..<smile> Today I picked a book up: Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. American: An Autobiography........copyrighted in 1992. Does anyone know anything about this General John Dyas????? Thanks!!! kaite.... On page 413, here is what he wrote: I visisted Huntsville, Alabama, several months later to be inducted into the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame along with Edward Stinson, Dr. Wernher von Braun (deceased), and Robert Hudgens. I enjoyed meeting the cordial people of Huntsville and listening to the frank, informative remarks of the guest speaker, astronaut Henry Hartsfield. A special bonus was seeing an old friend, General John DYAS, a former Hall of Fame inductee who had retired from the Air Force and was now living in Mobile. Johnny and I had been assigned to Ramstein Air Base in Germany together. Cols. Herbert Carter and Chuck Dryden, who had served with me in the 99th more than 40 years before, also attended the ceremony....

    1. Dyess in Sabine Parish
    2. Here is a posting that Thelma sent to me to upload into the Sabine Archives. She is a wonderful helper on gathering information for the Sabine Archives for the LaGenWeb. Thought you Dyess researchers might like to read it. Gaytha From: shields@eufaula.lib.ok.us (thelma shields) To: LaFamTree@aol.com Extracted from the Sabine Index of February 28, 1996 (article was submitted by Pan Trammel of Texarkana, Texas) "Dyess name can be found for many generations in area" Dyess' name is one that can be found for many generation in the Sabine Parish area. The first time was around 1870 when Henry Dyess and his new wife Tabitha Elizabeth Mixon moved to the Sabine area after the War Between the States. Henry was born on March 10, 1838 in Newton County Mississippi. He married Tabitha on January 7, 1867 in Bienville Parish. Henry Dyess fought in the War Between the States along side five other brothers and he served as a 3rd Sergeant in the 9th Louisiana Infantry at Camp Moore in Monroe. He was injured at Malvern Hill, Virginia when a canon ball struck his head. He also received injuries to his leg which left him disabled for most of his adult life. A grand daughter of Henry Dyess recalled that Henry Dyess was among the men when Stonewall Jackson was brought injured into the camp at Chancellorsville. Henry told his granddaughter that on that day grown men wept. Henry, lost in that war, brothers, Ely Dyess, George Dyess and Thomas Dyess. After the War Between the States, Henry Dyess met and married Tabitha Mixon. Around 1870 he moved his wife and young family to Sabine Parrish, where many of his descendants can be found today. Many of Henry Dyess descendants are alive and still living in Sabine Parish. One of these descendants included Grover Cleveland Dyess (August 23, 1885- February 25, 1973) Grover Dyess was married to Allie Iona Oliff and several children and grandchildren are now living in the Many, Marthaville and Robeline area.

    2. There was a destroyer named the USS Dyess in WWII. My wife's father served on her. I am guessing this is the same ship referred to on these messages. We have a copy of the Christmas menu, Tokyo Harbor, 1945! Paul M. Hendricks

    3. HI... This came from the Georgia listing.... There have been some situations where the URL is not available..but..I tried it and got there a few minutes ago... Good luck... kaite... There have been several people on the list who have asked for information regarding Cherokee tribes. The June/July 1998 newsletter Family Tree from the Ellen Payne Odum Library has two articles regarding Native American's. One stated that a data base is now available and is updated weekly. This has the Dawes Roll "Free Civilized Tribes 1898-1914. You can search at http://www.nara.gov/nara/nail.html Another suggested the "single best resources for Native American Genealogy" is the Family History Center (Church of Latter Day Saints-LDS).
