P.H. Reaney's "A Dictionary of English Surnames" gives the following meaning for FITZ: Fitz, Fitze; Anglo-French fiz 'son.' It is apparently used to distinguish the son from the father. Names like Fitzalan, Fitzwilliam, etc., have aquired an aristocratic flavour. Early examples are rare. Regards, Nick > >I do not think I am ready to sign on with them.
