    1. DUTTON OIL WELL
    2. source: 1788-1881 HISTORY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO. H. Z. Williams & Bros. Publishers, 1881. Reprinted 1976 by The Bookmark, Knightstown, Indiana. Since I was spinning my wheels yesterday, I took time to look at page 677, the Dutton Oil Well. This is perhaps a slightly different version, unless this is the only source. James Dutton, William Dutton, John Smithson, and Alden Warren were co-partners in developing this well in October, 1859. They drilled to bedrock. James Dutton said the stream of oil was as thick as his arm. They could fill and 80-gallon barrel in half a day, and sell it for $28. The well late sold for $100,000. But, my Melvin Dutton was not involved in it, so I am still looking for Melvin Duttons.
