Hello Kristi, Below you will find a Family Group Report for the family of Asahel and Lydia which gives Asahel's parents and Lydia's father. I have a few different dates than you but hopefully we can iron out the differences later. Unless I'm mistaken, Asahel & Lydia are the 4G grandparents of Gary Corlew, (my 7th cousin once removed [7C1R], from whom I obtained most of my information on this branch of the family. DUTTON1,2, 1071, M Birth: abt 1774 CT Death: abt 1821 Gallatin co., IL Father: Asahel DUTTON, 1121, M (1753-1776) Mother: Sarah FRISBIE, 1122, F (1756-1840) Misc. Notes He was probably born about 1774 since his parents were married in November 1772, his father died in 1776 and his wife was born in 1774. His place of birth was probably Woodbury, CT since that was where his parents were married. In about 1780, four of Sarah's brothers moved from CT to Poultney, Rutland county, Vermont. It seems likely that the young widow Sarah and her young son Asahel also moved to Poultney at that time. She married a man named Northrop of Middletown, Vermont. Middletown and Poultney are adjacent towns. It is probable that Asahel met and married Lydia Moss (also sometimes written as Morse or Morse) (1774-1835) while in Poultney. Lydia's family had moved from Canaan, Conntecticut to Poultney in 1780. Lydia and her parents moved to Bradford county, Pennsylvania in 1800. In 1800 Asahel was living in Ulster township, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania. Ulster township is now a part of Bradford county. The earliest known reference to Asahel and Lydia being husband and wife is an 1801 baptismal record for one of their nine children. In 1808 Asahel settled in the western part of Smithfield township, Lycoming county. Smithfield township is also now a part of Bradford county. An 1813 tax assessment listed his occupation as cooper (barrel maker). Asahel and Lydia were members of the Congregational Church of Smithfield township, as were Lydia's father, Solomon Moss; step-mother, Jemima Parker Moss, and some of Lydia's siblings. Solomon and Jemima Parker were two of the six founding members of the church in 1801. In 1814 Asahel and Lydia sold two parcels of land in Bradford county, one being 99 acres and the other being 198 acres. It was around that time that they moved to the vicinity of Shawneetown, Gallatin county, Illinois. Gallatin county is just across the Ohio river from Kentucky. It is believed that Asahel died in Gallatin county about 1821. Dutton Father: Solomon MOSS, 46480, M Misc. Notes According to writers of that period, Shawneetown was one of the most unpromising points for ministerial labor in the United States. Lydia and her daughter Lydia were among the first seven people - all women - to join the first Presbyterian church in Gallatin county. Notes In 1833, he filed a land claim in Shawneetown for a large tract of land from the mouth of the Saline river to the foot of Potts Hill. He cleared and farmed some 1,000 acres of bottom land which was divided into farms for his children. Once Abner took a load of cattle on a boat to New Orleans, where he sold them. Before he could get back to Illinois, some men robbed him of his money. Abner was one of the earliest General Baptist ministers in Hardin county, Illinois, which is adjacent to Gallatin county. In addition, Abner operated a grist mill, and owned a general merchandise store and boarding house. The 1850 census shows Abner and his family residing in Hardin county. The following note appeared about Abner Dutton in the Hardin Gazette newspaper for January 28, 1881: Uncle Abner Dutton making as good showing as any in his clearing, and he cuts the timber himself, mostly. He will be 78 years old next May and yet he is chipper as many young men. 5 5 5 Spouse: Elizabeth J. First Book of Records of The Congregational Church of Smithfield township, Bradford co., PA 2. The evidence that Asahel Dutton and Sarah Frisbie were the parents of Asahel E. Dutton is circumstantial, but highly pursuasive: 1.Asahel and Sarah's birth dates and marriage date are appropriate for them being the parents of the younger Asahel. 2. The fact that both men had the same name is an obvious clue. 3. The younger Asahel named one of his sons James Frisbie Dutton. James Frisbie was the name of one of Sarah's brothers. 4. James Frisbie shared a claim to land in Bradford county, Pennsylvania with Solomon Moss, who was the father-in-law of the younger Asahel Dutton. 5. The families of both the suspected parents and Asahel E. Cutton all moved to Poultney, VT. Sarah Frisbie and 4 of her brothers moved to the Poultney area when the younger Asahel was a young child. Further, the sister of the elder Asahel, Lois Dutton, moved to Poultney. The first docuement event involving the younger Asahel was his moving from Poultney in 1800. 3.
