Since you're my 13th cousin I can also tell you how you are connected to anyone else that is also a blood relative to me in my records. ----------------------------------Snip--------------------------------------------- > I found the following passage in the archives (a recent one from Dick > Dutton): > > I FIND this town of Dutton thrice named in Dooms-day-book, as held then > in the Conqueror's time by three persons. It is Latin. It means: "of a feudal tenant: holding immediately of one's lord; esp: holding directly of the crown" - Webster's Third New International Dictionary. -----------------------------------Snip----------------------------------------------- > Second, I do not have a copy of the Doomsday Book. An historian whom I > have met on the <net>, cannot find it either! So, has anyone seen > it??? I sure wish I had a copy of this book! Maybe, I could find it. Notice that nothing above mentions the DUTTONs by surname or even as people. Odard's time was well before the family started using the surname de Dutton (Duntune). It only says the TOWN was "thrice mentioned". I've never seen the book either but I'll bet that when the town was mentioned it was probably spelled Duntune - or something similar. Both Peter Leycester and Ormerod agree that the town was "thrice mentioned" in the Doomsday Book so I'm willing to bet a month's pay that it's true. A person may have to be able to read Latin to find it??? Dick
