Starkey, pp 68-69 Rocksavage, the great house of the Savage family at Clifton and the Brooke's mansion at Norton Priory no longer exist but the hall of the Dutton family improbably survives in a Sussex village. The story of its rescue and removal to the south of England is a remarkable one. In 1930 Mr. John Dewar of the whiskey distilling family inherited "Homestall", a couple of very old cottageswhich his uncle had made into one house at East Grinstead in Sussex. When visiting Cheshire Mr. Dewar saw Dutton Hall which had been used as a farmhouse for many years. Only the east side of the original quadrangle and Sir Piers Dutton's great hall remained and they were becoming derelict. Mr. Dewar bought Dutton Hall with the intention of building it on the East Grinstead house. Under the supervision of building experts, Dutton Hall was carefully taken down, the stones and timbers were numbered and transported to Sussex there to be re-erected and by 1933 the stately house of "Dutton Homestall" was complete. During the work of removal of Dutton, the great hall was stripped of its ceiling and this revealed massive oak frames with fine moulded shafts. Within the roof was a minstrel's gallery. The great door of the hall with its mullions and studs of iron and the six shields bearing the arms of the Dutton and Hatton families together with the ancient porch stand today exactly as they did in Cheshire as does the solar leading directly from the great hall. The building is now used as a boys' preparatory school.
