OK Beth, The 3 generation Family History Report below should give you all the data you have asked for. It just dawned on me that you state that Lena LeVaughn is your great grandmother and she happens to be my 7th cousin once removed (7C1R). That should make you my 8C2R but I do not find you, your parents or your grand parents in my records. We need to establish our family relationship. Our common ancestor is Thomas DUTTON Sr. (abt 1621-1687). You descend through his son John while I descend through his son Joseph. My line of descent is as follows: Joseph & Mary CUTLER (widow of Mathew SMITH) David & Sarah ABERNATHY (widow of Thomas DOOLITTLE) Amos & Sarah TURNER Jesse & Mehitable HITCHCOCK Horace S. & Katherine CODDINGTON George Washington & Emma J. METCALF Fred G. & Helen "Nell" RICHARDS Ralph Allen & Geraldine Louise REYNOLDS Me - Richard Allen DUTTON & Jean Cecile JENSON It's always a victory to find another living relative. I just saw Charles S. Dutton in Random Hearts (the movie was disappointing.) Assuming this is his correct name, where does he fit into the family tree, does anyone know? Sheila Dutton
The following is the result of research I had done trying to piece together these relationships among first generation Quaker immigrants to Chester County, Pennsylvania. I posted this once before, but the recipients of this list changes, so.... ---- After John Dutton's death, his widow Mary married their neighbor John Neild (alternative spellings:Neeld, Nealde, and sometimes Neelde). In his Dutton genealogy Cope says (page 34) "Job and Mary Darlington of Darnhall in Cheshire, Eng., had sons of whom John and Abraham came to Pennsylvania as early as 1711 and several of the letters written to them by their parents are still preserved. In one bearing date March 28th, 1713, they say 'Good Abraham and John pray present both our dear loves to our brother John Neild, and his wife our dear sister, - their sons unknown to us - and all his family; hoping that he will take a fatherly care of you now in our stead now you are so far off us.' >From this the inference is strong that Mary Neild was a sister of Job Darlington." The copy of the Dutton chart from England lists as John Dutton's wife "Mary sis of Job Darlington of Darnhall yeo bur from Rocksavage 1758". And John Dutton is listed as "John Dutton of Overton emigr to Aston (Chester) Penn 1682, 1648-1693. Also on this chart, John's father John and grandfather Thomas are listed as "of Overton". In 1904 Gilbert Cope wrote a book with Henry G. Ashmead, "Historic Homes and Institutions and Generalogical and Personal Memoirs of Chester and Delaware Counties, Pennsylvania." That book has a section on the Darlington family of Pennsylvania. They state (page 29) "Job, bap. November, 1655, at Whitegate, married by license, December 6, 1680, Mary Neild, of Budworth Parva, at Witton Parish Church, Nantwich. She died December 18, 1728, and was buried at Over. In the records of this church it is entered that 'Job Darlington, of Darnhall, in ye Parish of Whitegate, yeoman, was interred Augt ye 11th 1731.' On page 30, in describing the emigrant to Pennsylvania, Abraham Darlington, they state "Tradition says that Abraham did not serve out his apprenticeship, but that he and his brother John came to Pennsylvania under some inducements from their mother's brother, John Neild, which were not realized after their arrival." So let's make sense of this. Job Darlington has a sister Mary who marries John Dutton. Job marries Mary Neild whose brother John goes to Pennsylvania and has land laid out right next to John Dutton. When John Dutton dies in 1693, Mary marries John Neild. At this point the two Darlington siblings (Job and Mary) are married to Neild siblings (Mary and John respectively). Thus the letter's statement "present both our dear loves to our brother John Neild, and his wife our dear sister" was literally true on both counts. Aston and Overton, Cheshire, England, are but 1-2 miles apart. Darnhall is not on my map of the area and may not exist any more but was probably right nearby. Little Budworth is about 10 miles south of Overton and Nantwich is 10 more beyond that.

Hi, Dutton Cousins! I know very little about my lineage on the Dutton side of the family. Most documentation has been on my mother's family ... Black, Mason, Manlove, Lank, Lingo, Davis, Johnson, Martin(Marten) and Parker. My father's family is less extensive. My grandfather was Capt. David Thomas Dutton (4/4/1867 - 5/20/1938) who was married to Eliza Jane Wilson (9/15/1883 - 5/29/1970. My grandfather had one brother that I know of ... Zedic C. Dutton (8/31/1861 - 4/12/1930). I believe their father (my great grandfather) was Robert Dutton (1822 - 1/31/1884) who was married to Sarah H. Dickerson (5/1/1834 - 2/8/1910). I also believe my great grandfather had a brother, James H. Dutton (8/2/1817 - 4/11/1884). Their father (my great, great grandfather)was Truitt Dutton (no dates) who was married to Elizabeth (2/6/1792 - 12/31/1890). I know the dates are accurate, but I can't vouch for the actual line of descent. These people lived in Sussex County in and near Georgetown and Milton, Delaware. If anyone has any information on these or any Delaware Duttons, I would greatly appreciate hearing from them. Truly, David W. Dutton, Jr.
Hello Beth, I have no parents for Ann GARDNER. My data shows she was b. 9 Apr 1800, d. 20 Jul 1881 (locations unknown) and m. John DUTTON 16 Feb 1821. They had 10 children for whom I do have vital statistics. Thank, you, Susie, for including me on the Dutton List. My connection to Allen Dutton is this: Allen Dutton first married my great-grandmother, Sabre [listed as Sarah in the Johnson County court house records on 5 October 1882]. They had one son, my grandfather, Proctor Davis/Dutton, but the marriage did not last, which has made this branch of the family difficult to research]. Sabre evidently called her son by her maiden name. Allen then married Amey Mollett in abt. 1890 and they had 12 children. My line, then is this: Suzie Smith Emma Elizabeth Davis [Dutton] Williams[Henry Maurice Williams] Proctor Davis [Dutton] [Lula Belle Castle] Allen Dutton [Sabre/Sarah Jane Davis] Elias Dutton [Sarah Penix] James Cass Dutton [Tilda Mollett] John Dutton [Susannah Stepp] Jeremiah Dutton [Sarah Price? or Prince? or ....] Any help any one of our cousins who has information would be a big help in my search for this family and our connection to it. It occurs to me that I have many relatives that I have little knowledge of. Looking forward to meeting the clan. Suzie
Yes, cousin you have lots of family to get to know. I descend from Elias Dutton. My father was Foster Dutton, my mother was Bessie Turner. Their marriage did NOT last either. My father ran off before I was born, and I was then adopted by my maternal grandmother. It took me nearly 50 years to trace my family. I do have it done now and would be more than willing to share with you. There are a lot of cousins on this list that will be able to share information with you, and will be more then willing to do so. I wish you luck in finding all the family you can possibly stand. LOL This is a VERY LARGE family of Duttons. Bessie

Hello Suzie, Welcome to the DUTTON List. You have come to the right place for some of the data you need but some of the rest is still a mystery. I don't believe any of us knows the parentage of Jeremiah, though we have bunches of his descendants. I am not the best source of data for this branch of the family but will give you what I have. I believe a Family Group Report for Elias' family will straighten out most of your data below. You will find it at the end of this message. I do hava a number (but not all) of descendants for Allen. Sarah was born about 1836 in Scott Countu, Virginia. Her parents had also moved from Scott County to Johnson County, Kentucky. When the 1860 Census of Johnson County was taken, Elias and Sarah lived in Warfield, Kentucky. In about 1889, Elias married for the second time to Surrilda Preston. She was born in about 1826 in Kentucky. Elias and Sarah' children were as follows: 1. John, born January 27, 1852 2. Malinda, born about 1853 3. Elizabeth, born August 14, 1855 4. Caudill, 20, February 18, 1892 and second to Cynthia Perry, 18, December 25, 1898' Elias served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The Adjutant General's Report of the War Between the States of the Roll of Company " E " Thirty - nineth of the Union Army lists Elias Dutton as being mustered in at Peach Orchard, near Louisa, Kentucky on February 16, 1863 as a Private. This Unit was part of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. However on March 8th, 1863, Elias deserted. He was returned to duty on January 1, 1864 and was sentenced by General Courts - Martial to forfit 9 months pay. He served out the remainder of his three year enlistment and was discharged on Sept 15, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. I would like to add here that of the 29 Privates in his Unit, 18 deserted at one time or the other. As you can imagine, these were difficult times for everyone. By February, 1870, Elias and his family moved to Wise County, Virginia. The particular aera to which he moved would later become part of Dickenson County, Virginia when it was formed in 1880. They lived in the old Counts Place in theSouth of the Mountain. The Counts Place would later be renamed Counts Ranger Cabin. on February 25, 1870, Elias bought 1053 acres of land from Robert Fields. This land bordered the Forks of Mill Creek, Twin Branch and the top of Cumberland Mountain. The deed to this land however was apparently not filed or recorded until January 1887, probably by Elias' son John. Elias apparently experienced some kind of trouble in Virginia and decided to return to Johnson County, Kentucky. This was perhaps prier to 1872. This move reflected in the 1880 Census of Johnson County, Kentucky which shows John's daughter, Hulda, born in Kentucky in 1872. The 1880 Census of Johnson County, Kentucky lists Elias as head of his household as follows: The following pages chronicle the life, wives and children of ELIAS DUTTON, b. 2 Feb 1832 in Scott Co., VA (located in the southwestern tip of the state of Virginia). Elias was the eldest son of JAMES and MATILDA (Mollette) DUTTON, our g.g.g. grandparents and brother to our g.g. grandfather ANDREW JACKSON DUTTON. In 1852, when James and Matilda left their homestead in Johnson Co., Ky, it was Elias who assumed responsibility for it. He had married Sarah (Sally) (Penix) 11 Sept 1850. Sally was the daughter of Allen (b. 1833) and Sarah Penix. In the years to come, (a span of 29 years) he and Sally had a total of 15 children! They are reported in the pages to follow. Sally died 20 Dec 1882 at the age of 49, leaving Elias with nine children under the age of eighteen. Elias married again 20 Aug 1885 to a widow, Sarah (Sally) West, maiden name Niebert, b. ab. 1836 in VA. This was a second marriage for each of them. They had one child b. in 1887. Elias' second wife, Sally, died 20 May 1889, less than four years after their marriage. She was 53 and Elias, 57. On 30 Aug 1890 Elias married for the third time to Serilda (Preston. Little is known about that marriage except that she died with no children resulting from their union. On 27 June 1905, Elias married for the fourth time to Lizzie Van Hoose, b. 1877. Elias was 73 and Lizzie, 28. Elias and Lizzie (yes they did!) had four children. I've found no records on their names and birthdates, just the fact that they were born, see the records that follow. Elias Dutton died 15 Sept 1917 in Paintsville, Johnson Co., KY at the age of 85. His legacy alone left twenty children, and needless to say, our line of DUTTONS are very much a presence in modern day Johnson County, Ky. Note: Found an Elias Dutton in Soc.Sec. Archive files died in Paintsville, Ky. November 1966. Born 12 June 1896 #403-03-7003. Pr. a g.child of the above Elias. I don't have an Elias recorded as a son. A message came through on my wife's juno file without a heading or e-mail address. I will attempt to respond. The source of the report put on DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com on 1-12-99 was (probably) LDS microfiche 6016283 (2) and 6016284 (1). The quality was not great, and my copy was worse. (William) Henry Dutton born 3/_ /1789 in Mass. Henry Dutton b. 3__/1789 in Massachusetts was the first of his family to settle in Georgia. Some Massachusetts history and family given. His sons in Bulloch County included ?edekiah ?Eamos or James and Obadiah Overton Dutton. Some of these names identified with Massachusetts, Framington or Middlesex Counties. Data generally agrees with your notes. Specifically, Samuel Dutton was born 1821, m. 1845 in Bulloch, George to Sarah ?agan. His estate in that county. Some of the others on your list may be mentioned. It is necessary, I believe, for you to exam this fiche personally. There is a helpful name list with dates and some sources mentioned. You will need to assess the value of the fiche yourself.
Bancroft defined early pioneers as those who arrived before 1849. The total number in this category is only a few hundred. Therefore, it's most likely that anyone looking for California ancestors will find them to have arrived as a member of the gold rush when thousands came. > -----Original Message----- > From: Mike Dunton [mailto:miked@victoryseeds.com] > Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 1999 8:16 PM > To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: RE: (no subject) > > > That information was posted by Curt Rowe and is as follows: > > >From History of California Vol 2 1801-1824, Hubert Howe Bancroft, 1890 > > Dutton (David Dewey), 1840 [the year he came to California], nat. of Mass. > who crossed the plains to Or. in '39, and in '40 was a passenger on the > Lausanme, touching at Bodega...
