    1. RE: Cope's Duttons in Family Tree Maker?
    2. Curt Rowe
    3. Well I've primarily only entered my line. Maybe if enough of us have done the same thing, we could merge them into a reasonably complete database. > -----Original Message----- > From: Doug Hall [mailto:doughall@mediaone.net] > Sent: Tuesday, November 30, 1999 8:26 AM > To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Cope's Duttons in Family Tree Maker? > > > Simple question: > > Has anyone entered all (or even a good portion of) Gilbert Cope's > DUTTONs of > Pennsylvania into a Family Tree Maker database who would be > willing to make > that available to me (and to anyone else who might want a copy) > as either a > FTW or GEDCOM file? > > Doug Hall > >

    1. Project to Update Gilbert Cope ?!?!
    2. Doug Hall
    3. Well, I got quite a few positive responses to my suggestion of a collaborative project to update Gilbert Cope's 1871 "Genealogy of the Dutton Family of Pennsylvania". If this kind of project is going to succeed, it will have to proceed with some shared expectations and common understandings. It will also need to have a core of 5-6 committed participants who agree to help shape the project and do much of the grunt work involved. Here are my proposals: 1. The project must have a limited defined scope. 1A. I suggest that it include the lineal descendants of John DUTTON and Mary DARLINGTON, the PA immigrants of 1682, not their ancestry (or supposed ancestry) in Cheshire England. This is similar to what Cope did in his book. For each of the first 4 generations, ancestry of DUTTON spouses can be included back to the original emigrant to North America. This is a lot of folks potentially. The number of lineal descendents in Cope is: 2nd generation - 5 3rd generation - 26 4th generation - 48 5th generation - 91 6th generation - 243 7th generation - 508 8th generation - 335 (children in 1870 when Cope published) Our goal would be to fill out the 8th generation (maybe as many as 1,250 altogether using a 2.5 multiplier for each generation) 9th generation would amount to about 3,100 10th generation would amount to 7,800 (this would include those of us born in the 1940s and 1950s 11th generation would be on the order of 20,000 Of course, Cope missed some members of earlier generations (such as my g-grandfather Frank DUTTON in the 7th generation) that would expand the tree laterally as well. So we are talking potentially about 40,00-50,000 new names! That is no small task. Cope only dealt with 1,259! 1B. As a corollary, DUTTONS for whom there is no known connection to the tree of John and Mary's descendents should NOT be included. The descendents of Massachusetts cousins or of other, later, immigrants should NOT be included. We can't have lots of disconnected branches with no place to put them. Until a submitter can legitimately match them up with a known individual in the master file, they do not get added. 2. The project must have some standards to make sure things mesh right. 2A. Technically, all data should be in Family Tree Maker or GEDCOM files. Those files can be imported into a master file and be connected up with the persons already listed in the master file. This should NOT be a project to do data entry for someone who has some scraps of information or some word processed family tree. The project would be an attempt to integrate information that others have already prepared. 2B. Citations of sources should be included in all submissions. FTM and other software has capability to provide a citation for each event - birth, death, marriage, burial, etc. It is amazing how much "personally told to me by my grandmother" material is wrong. The result of the project should not be to propagate guesses, but to present well-researched and documented relationships. 2C. We should use Cope's material as the basic starting point and reference. If someone has information that contradicts Cope's work, he/she needs to reference the page and text of Cope that is affected. If material is submitted that provides for 8th, 9th, and 10th generation descendents of an individual in Cope, that individual's number in Cope's book should be specifically identified. 3. We need to have shared but reasonable timetables for any work. I am not retired; I have a full time job, a 13 year old son, a wife, some farm animals. I do a lot of community volunteer work and also travel out of the country quite a bit. I do genealogy as a hobby and only when it fits into my otherwise busy life. I suppose most of us are in that situation. If someone submits some DUTTON material, it could take weeks or even months to get added. Depending on how much help we get from how many people, the project could easily take 1-2 years to come to fruition. ----- Given these suggestions do I now have volunteers to become part of a team to do this? If so, let me know WHAT you can do: check sources, merge data files, proof existing data for inconsistencies, typos, do original research? My plan would be for the group to do its work by email and to set up a group mailing list that we could use for mutual communication. We could use this DUTTON-L list as a means of updating everyone on our project's status and requesting information from other DUTTON researchers. I'm interested in negative reactions and criticisms too! So pipe up and give us all your thoughts by posting here to the full list, not just to me personally. Doug Hall Chichester NH

    3. Susie - this file is marvelous. Clearly you've taken a lot of time to enter so much of Cope's material and more. Now I have a further question for all of us on this list. Is there a way we can - by working together - expand the complete descent in a single file adding the pieces each of us may have? EXAMPLE - my line back to Cope's genealogy is something he didn't know about. In his book (p. 72) he lists Nathan P. DUTTON as #378 and says "He was killed by lightning when attending a public sale at Village Green 8 mo 3, 1850. His widow married again but died soon after. No children." In fact, his widow, Sidney LARKIN, gave birth to Frank DUTTON on March 3, 1851 - 7 months after Nathan's death. Frank was then raised by his grandfather Jonathan DUTTON and his uncle William Henry DUTTON. While Cope wrote in 1871, and Frank was 20 years old at the time, Cope didn't get the info correct. Frank was my great-grandfather and I have info on his upbringing, marriage, and descendents that would update and expand this small section of Cope's work. In fact, I have a photo of Frank taken in 1905 at his daughter's wedding at the old DUTTON homestead in Twin Oaks. Susie has already extended Cope's material with her own lines. Others of you may have other new material you could add. If I simply import parts of Susie's FTW file into my own, I'll have this part more complete. But others of us must have other sections. A mind-boggling, but doable project would be to set up a single master file in someone's hands and have each of us submit the new material. The new material should be well documented, of course, and we would probably need some guidelines on that. We'd also need to figure our way through the mechanical steps of merging different pieces of data from FTW and GEDCOM files in ways that won't irresponsibly or accidently overwrite one submission with another. That will take some care and attention. With a lot of work, we could even produce a 21st century printed version of Cope's genealogy to be shared with all DUTTONS (even our cousins descended from John of Massachusetts, those still in England, etc.) This is not something for 1 person to do. This would require a team effort. Is anyone game? Let me know by personal reply, but also post here to the list so we will all have some idea if this idea is worth pursuing..... 2. Curt Rowe
    3. I have added the documents that Bob Dutton has been discussing on this list after he was gracious enough to send me a copy. They are the probate records of Kingsman Dutton (ca. 1711 - ca. 1765) and can be found at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~amcolan/Dutton/dutton_documents.html#Kingsman Dutton (ca. 1711 I anyone would like a Word 97 version of them, please email me and I will send it to you. I can also send an RTF version. Based on the evidence in these documents that indicate that Ann (Routh) Dutton was Kingsman's wife at his death, I've added an additional generation which is the Kingsman that married Ruth Watson. At this point it is only conjecture and circumstantial evidence, but I feel that it is not possible that Ruth Watson was the second wife of Kingsman who was married to Ann Routh above. I'm open to any differing opinions. Curt Rowe

    1. Dutton Marriages In Old Swedes Church
    2. Hi DUTTONS, The following marriage information was provided by the Old Swedes Church, 606 Church Street, Wilmington, DE 19801, from their records from 1713 to 1799. Part of this information was included in an earlier, incomplete posting 11/17/99. David Dutton/Janna McClaskey--10/22/1750 David Dutton/Mary Lind--5/4/1741 David Dutton/Hannah Rodgers--10/1/1778 Francis Dutton/Hannah Talbert--4/17/1775 Jonathan Dutton/Martha Beeson--2/5/1772 Kingsman Dutton/Ruth Watson--2/27/1756 (L). Means they had a license. Thomas Dutton/Anna Ruth--2/13/1758 Hannah Dutton/Jonathan Richards--11/15/1756 David Dutton/Hannah Rodgers and Francis Dutton/Hannah Talbert are sons of the Kingsman Dutton who married Anne Routh. Kingsman Dutton/Ruth Watson is assumed by some to be the second marriage of the same Kingsman Dutton who married Anne Routh. This is doubtful because he would have been married to two wives living in the same township of Aston, Chester County, PA. at the same time. Also his first wife was living when Kingsman died, because she administered his estate, received a widow's 1/3 of his estate, and received a larger amount to maintain and school their two younger children, all this according to the probate records of Chester County, Pa. Some records indicate Kingsman Dutton/Ruth Watson had a son, Kingsman, born in Aston township in 1759. It may be that Kingsman Dutton/Ruth Watson was another son of Kingsman Dutton/Anne Routh, but we have no proof. I ask the church for any additional information about these Dutton, and it indicated they had has no additional information and no records indicating any of them were members of the church. The will (1718-1719) of the first Kingsman I know of spelled and signed his name Kinsman. He was the grandfather of the first Kingsman Dutton who married Anne Routh. Bob Dutton

    3. I've just discovered your list and would like to introduce myself. I'm Norm PRESTAGE, and I live in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. My paternal great grandmother was Rebecca Charlotte DUTTON. She was born 17 Feb 1889 on Woodstock Road, Summertown, Oxfordshire, which I understand is part of the city of Oxford. Somehow, she moved to Birmingham, where she married my great Grandad, Robert Henry PRESTAGE, on 27 May 1907. They came to Canada in 1912. I have certs showing this much. She died 19 Jun 1970 at Woodstock, ON, Canada. Her parents were William David DUTTON (11 Apr 1864-Dec 1906) and Minnie LYDDIATT (6 May 1866-Dec 1920). I don't have any other info on them. I've heard that he was a button maker and a 'sand blaster at Cycle Works', two rather disparate jobs, I would think! If you have any info on this particular DUTTON family, I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Norm Prestage nprestage@ontis.com

    3. Coincidentally, I just sent this out tonight to few cousins. It describes Kingsman Dutton's movement from PA, various counties in Virginia including Wood, to Athens County, Ohio. Kingsman Dutton was the patriarch of the family which included a son James who would have been 25 in 1810. However, James is reported as moving to Ohio in 1807 There are no sons named David or William. Kingsman had an uncle David who ended up in Ohio as well. He had a son William. For a complete run down of this Dutton line, see http://homespages.rootsweb.com/amcolan. I would appreciate knowing where you found these records.
