Sorry about that, the family whose research links back to 1567 is WILKINSON and so far I've found no links to MOORE. I apologize for that mistake, Betsy Hale Orlando, FL
I wrote this to another researcher who contacted me off the list but the topic was brought up again, so I figured I should respond ON the list: Here is what I wrote to that first person: (Name removed), I'm very aware that families intermarry, I run a RootsWeb mailing list for cousin marriages and have several cousin marriages in my ancestry. The reason why I don't think this is the case is that I've got families that cover a wide area, different social structures and so far I've found no evidence that any of them are related. My ancestors on my Mother's side that I found in Dick's files were moneyed people in Yorkshire, England (WILKINSON) that later aligned with English Royalty My ancestors on my Father's side that I found in Dick's files (MOORE) were not moneyed people and lived in the southern areas of England in the Devonshire area (I understand there may be/could be some common ancestor between these two families way back... [added note: this family's research goes back to 1567 with no trace of MOORE that I can find in it] - if so, I'd like to find it) The ancestors on my Husband's side that I found in Dick's files (SAUVE dit LaPLANTE, SAUVE, LaPLANTE) were French Canadians and immigrated from France. There should be NO common link between this family and the two listed above. See why I'm perplexed? Thanks for asking, Betsy Hale Orlando, FL
To add to what Doug has already said. I don't know who you were looking for, but if Quaker, they tended to marry Quakers (if not, they were disowned) and Quaker families tended to travel together. I have one set of first cousins who married each other. I have two male ancestors who married sisters. I have at least one ancestor who married a niece of his father's wife; thus, you COULD get some pretty tangled family trees. Going back into medieval times--the gentry married each other; thus, the Duttons would be related to the other gentry by more than one line. Dick's data could be right or wrong--checking the primary evidence would solve the mystery. Carole P.S. I also do not have the RAM required for such a huge file! Dick sent me one medieval zipped gedcom file. -------------------------- Doug Hall wrote: > > Betsy and others, > > Shortly after he told us all in November that he had been diagnosed with > MDS, Dick asked if anyone would like a copy of his master file. Hi all, When Dick was just starting out with his genealogy he couldn't find his ancestors in NY. After searching for several months I made the connection for him and later sent him my file of 11,000 Duttons. He added many names once he got started as you all know. If anyone can get a copy of his current file, I have the capability to work with it and would like a copy. I had also asked Dick for a copy before he died but he couldn't send it. I have a large file on the Mass. Duttons and am always glad to help anyone out. Randy Lilley-Essex,VT
To Doug and all: Several months before Dick told us that he was sick, he sent me two files. They nowhere near come to the quarter million he uploaded to the WorldConnect Page, but I suspect it was (is) the heart of his main Dutton information. He called it his "Ancestors of William the C's" and "Descendants of Rollo" files - and that catches most of us. The first is relatively small, but the latter has over 45,000 individuals. As I said, this was several months before his announcement to us and I'm sure that he added many things to it since then. I know he added a couple files that I had sent of over a thousand or so names each. He used to get so excited (I don't think he really ever got "excited," but you could tell) when I sent him something that would let him "connect" even a small group from his "unconnected file" to his "main file." I don't want this to sound like he and I were old "buddies," we weren't. I never met Dick. Although we had planned it several times, something always popped up and one of us had to cancel. I had talked to him on the phone only a couple times. He would call me to try to tell me what I was doing wrong in down loading this or that (the little bit of humor here is that I'm the chair of a 1000 student, 30 faculty department of Computer Science - one of the largest (and, hopefully, good) in the country). So anyway. When Dick said he was sick, I couldn't bring myself to ask him to send me his file. For whatever reason. And I have begun now though, like Doug, to realize some one or more of us needs to take on that responsibility - and it is sort of a responsibility. One of the things I miss now is when someone writes in giving a name they are seeking, I used to sit back and know what would happen next. And, I would usually learn something new - another little tid-bit from Dick. We don't have that now. I have privately responded to a couple things, where I could, with information from the part of Dick's file that I have. But it's not enough, and I don't think I have the time to make it enough. But maybe if several of us tried? Were willing to help maintain a consistent file - maybe it could be tied with the project that was discussed a while back to put Cope online (by the way, I broke down, and my copy should arrive within the week. Its been a long 6+ so far. Then I can actually talk to the rest of you folks and know what it's all about.). I would be willing to call Jean and see if she could get me a copy of the file. I talked to her once on the phone - I don't know if she would remember me, but she seemed to be very nice. I suspect it's just sitting somewhere already compressed and on an IOMEGA ZIP disc. I don't know if its a zipped gedcom or zipped Reunion (Dick used a Mac) file. If the latter, I would have to unzip it and reformat it into gedcom, then zip it back up before I could get it to others. Do I have any help? I guess, even if I don't, I'm going to do that anyway. I just won't be as good at it, or as responsive as Dick. And I think I'll have to get a faster computer. Mine at the office is fine, but I'm pretty cheap at home. Ron
Betsy and others, Shortly after he told us all in November that he had been diagnosed with MDS, Dick asked if anyone would like a copy of his master file. It was over 10 Mbytes in size with nearly 250,000 names. I had responded that I would like a copy of it, but Dick was too close to the end of his life to respond again. He warned us about imperfections in the data and said that he was only really able to guarantee his own direct line. If someone on the list did get a full copy of his master file, I would like to obtain a copy too. Or, does anyone know how to download a full file from http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dickdutton In a file as large as Dick's there well may be information regarding distant lines that you are unaware were connected. My own research in Quaker families of Chester County has turned up many, many connections that I would never had thought existed. If your parents and your husband's mother's family have roots in the same geographical area for more than 3 generations, then there could very well be connections in Dick's database. I understand that someone on the Dutton list may have shared information with Dick Dutton and may be fairly familiar with his GedCom file. If so, can you please contact me off the list at: Charmd1z@aol.com My problem is this: In searching through RootsWeb's WorldConnect Gedcom Files the other night I plugged in several names that show up in my ancestry. These were random names from both of my parents and also a name from my husband's family. Dick's files kept coming up. Now, to find names from one of my parents wouldn't be such a big deal, but the names that I'm researching came and found his information in came from BOTH parents ancestors (who are supposed to be unrelated as far as I know) AND my husband's mother's family (which definitely shouldn't be related to mine). I'd really like to solve this mystery. If anyone could help me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Betsy Hale Charmd1z@aol.com
Hello, Found this copy of an email but failed to copy address... Does anyone agree that Elizabeth Rippeth and Jeremiah are Lydia's parents? 'Lydia "Ida" Dutton, daughter of Jeremiah & Elizabeth (Rippeth) Dutton, was born 15 July 1822 in Bowerston, Harrison Co., OH. She died 25 Mar 1889 in Roswell, Tuscarawas Co., OH> William Mitchell says that she attended a United Bretheren church. Death records indicate that she was a white female aged 65 at the time of her death. She was a widow and a housekeeper. She died of lung disease. Cemetery records show that she died: 25 Mar 1899 (aged 66y, 8m, 10d). She is buried at Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville, Tusc. Co., OH. I've seen the stone. It is possible that they were unable to read the death year. It has deteriorated a great deal.' Susan Handy
Dear Phyllis I have just been reading your e-mail to Colin about the proposed Dutton Re-union to Cheshire and E.Grinstead etc. and will be very keen to come along when details appear. I have been following the Dutton saga on the internet with great interest but have yet to make a contribution. I was born in Crewe, Cheshire (my name is John Anthony Dutton) but unfortunately I know very little of my Grandfather's relations. He was John Dutton and lived in Crewe and married a Miss Lamb, (I can find out her Christian name). There were three children, my father, Frank plus Stanley and Lillian; all are now deceased. I did a little research in the archives of the National Portrait Gallery in London some time ago. When I am free of a top priority committment I will send details--probably in 2 weeks' time. best wishes to all my Dutton Cousins from Tony Dutton
Colin, Welcome back!!! And with such cool news. I don't think that I'll be able to make it with my whole family but am trying to get it together so that I can bring one daughter over. She is graduating from high school and I think that it would be a great present for her before she heads off to college. Anyway, as we get more news, I will update the Web site. As for the questions in BOLD below: 1) If you are interested in a family get-together over here in Cheshire this summer, please raise a hand (just joking), please let me know how many would be in your party and approximate age groups etc.? BETWEEN 2 and 6. 2) Would you be requiring assistance from over here in finding your accommodation? IF WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A SPECIFIC DATE WHERE WE ARE ALL MEETING, IT MIGHT BE NICE TO STAY IN THE SAME PLACE OR IN THE SAME VICINITY. OTHERWISE, AN I HAVE AN AUNT WHO IS A TRAVEL AGENT AND I CAN PROBABLY GET HER TO TAKE CARE OF MY RESERVATIONS. SUGGESTIONS WOULD STILL BE WELCOME. 3) Do you have any preferences in places that you would like to visit? THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME THAT ANYONE IN MY DIRECT LINE HAS BEEN BACK TO ENGLAND SINCE THE 1630S. ANYWHERE WOULD BE NEW FOR US :) 4) Do you know where Cheshire is? I HAVE A GOOD MAP BUT I WOULD HAVE A TOUGH TIME DRIVING THERE :) 5) Do you have any suggestions as to what other things you would like to do? I REALLY LIKE THE 'MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT' CONCEPT . . . IT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA. IT WOULD BE NICE TO TOUR SOME OF THE CHURCHES, HALLS, RUINS, ETC. THAT ARE HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT TO THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND AND THE FAMILY. PERHAPS EVEN ARRANGEMENTS TO VISIT A GENEALOGICAL ARCHIVE. 6) Suggested start and finish dates and length of stay etc.? ????? Thanks again, Colin and glad that you are back online. Talk to you later, Mike Dunton list manager - dutton-l & dunton-l webmanager www.Dunton.org -----Original Message----- From: Colin Dutton [mailto:colin.dutton@btinternet.com] Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2000 2:52 PM To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: UK in 2K Hi All, sorry for being off line for a week or so, but I have spent some adding a new 17GB hard drive, a faster 400MHz chip, a 50 speed CD Drive and a CD Rewriter to my set up as I had been having problems up until Christmas. My e-mail set up kept dropping me out when downloading my e-mails which meant that by the time I was able to get a non-stop download from my server it took several attempts and so the earlier e-mails were duplicated, triplicated etc. and so on. Now, to answer a few questions. Just before Christmas I sent an e-mail to Mike re UK in 2K and he is due to send me the details of interested people, however, it may be an idea if you took some time to answer some questions direct to me, (copied to Mike of course) so that I can evaluate the situation. So, what is on offer? Well, that really depends on what you all want as I don't want to force the issue just because I thought of the idea and I'm over here in the driving seat. And, just in case you are new to any of the above, it has been mooted that we hold a get-together in the summer of this Millennium year to meet as a family, visit various places of interest in Cheshire and England in general, to celebrate our heritage and our distant but definate ancestry and if nothing else, to have a good time getting to know each other. It was thought that we may like to try to hold a Jacobean Banquet as near to Midsummer's Day (Saturday 24th June) as possible and if possible to hold it down in East Grinstead at Stoke Newington School which is made up of parts of the original Dutton Hall. So, here are a few questions that may help to clarify the situation for us all. 1) If you are interested in a family get-together over here in Cheshire this summer, please raise a hand (just joking), please let me know how many would be in your party and approximate age groups etc.? 2) Would you be requiring assistance from over here in finding your accommodation? 3) Do you have any preferences in places that you would like to visit? 4) Do you know where Cheshire is? 5) Do you have any suggestions as to what other things you would like to do? 6) Suggested start and finish dates and length of stay etc.? 7) (For the locals) If you live here in the UK and are interested in the above event/s, would you be willing to lend a hand to organising, or assisting in the organisation of any event/s? I am sure that there are other question that you may like to ask or information that you may wish to find out. Well, now's the time to ask. To save everybody asking the same question, or duplication of answers etc., it may be advisable that all replies are open because it may prompt a question from somebody else or even an answer. I'm sorry that I will not be offering a prize for the first reply but I do hope that we can move on this as some of you have already expressed a need to arrange flights and book time off work etc. Well, moving on. I have spoken on several occassions to young Byron Hadley, he seems quite a character and is quite knowledgeable about Dutton history especially with respect to the Sherborne branch. Also, I have spoken to Charles Sherborne Dutton, who, like me works for British Telecom and feels that he is a direct descendant of the Sherborne Duttons and confirms that he is either the fourth or fifth Charles Sherborne. We are getting together next month at half term (school term) as for one Byron is still at school, Liz, my partner is a teacher and is also still at school until then. We are spending a weekend looking around the Sherborne estate and looking at various documentation that is archived locally. I will publish any findings for everyone to see. Well, that's it for now, kind regards. Colin
Hi Colin!! So nice to hear from you....sounds like you've moved up to a "Rolls Royce" computer!! I LOVE your idea.....can't wait!! The DUTTON FAMILY is a terrific INTERNATIONAL family of "cousins" and a meeting such as this one is a marvelous way to meet each other. >>>a get-together in the summer of this Millennium year to meet as a family, visit various places of interest in Cheshire and England in general, to celebrate our heritage and our distant but definate ancestry and if nothing else, to have a good time getting to know each other. That says it all....bravo! ><>>>> It was thought that we may like to try to hold a Jacobean Banquet as near to Midsummer's Day (Saturday 24th June) as possible and if possible to hold it down in East Grinstead at Stoke Newington School which is made up of parts of the original Dutton Hall. Oh yes, we DEFINITELY have to do that....and at E.Grinstead would be great.....but do you mean AT the school itself?? Are they able to host an event such as that?? Food and minstrels and other merriment?? <g> (Or is their focus---mainly school situations??) YOUR QUESTIONS and my answers! 1) If you are interested in a family get-together over here in Cheshire this summer, please raise a hand (just joking), please let me know how many would be in your party and approximate age groups etc.? YES, definitely interested. Just me.....My hubby has absolutely no interest in ANYbodys family! He'd rather watch paint dry!! 2) Would you be requiring assistance from over here in finding your accommodation? YES.....I'm not good at that.....and you know all the nice places. Nothing fancy required. 3) Do you have any preferences in places that you would like to visit? Well, yes, the original Dutton land....churches.....graveyards......the Sherborne locations and any other family-connected places. ----and maybe a whizz thru London on our way to E.Grinstead?? 4) Do you know where Cheshire is? I've studied every map I could get my hands on.....but that's not like BEING THERE! 5) Do you have any suggestions as to what other things you would like to do? Yes, I have a very old friend in Accrington I'd like to have lunch with.....and maybe a side trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge since I have another family connection in that area - who lived at Chettle House, Dorset... I believe it's open to the public and has lovely gardens. But I also could add an EXTRA day or two onto my trip to do those things myself. (If I can rent a car....and if you'll give me a quick lesson in driving on the wrong side of the road!! AWK! (Do I need a special drivers license to do that??) 6) Suggested start and finish dates and length of stay etc.? I'm keeping the entire month of JUNE open......YOU pick it!! Can you gauge how many days it would take to see the interesting Duttons-related places?? How's the English weather in June??? If there's enough of us....would it be wise to rent some sort of tour bus??? You know, let somebody ELSE drive!!) >>>>>Well, moving on. I have spoken on several occassions to young Byron Hadley, This may be one of the most interesting facets of the trip......I'm fascinated by this whole turn of events. Hope this helps. WHATEVER you figure out for us.....I'm sure it will be a delight! So keep in touch with the developing plans. I don't want to miss a thing! Phyllis just north of Atlanta
