    3. Hi Colin - I eagerly await your report on the Byron Hadley visit. If there was ever a "man on the scene" I'd pick for this job....it would certainly be you! So I think I speak for all of us in the US. that we'll be interested in your "take" on the whole story. I was sorry to hear of the limited response to the UK in 2K plans. I've just heard from Carole and she and I are still VERY interesting in coming over......and we promise that our enthusiasm will make up for our limited numbers!! If you're still willing to shepherd a small group around the countryside......you can count us in. Who knows, a smaller more intimate group might prove easier to work with logistically.....and will certainly produce just as much fun and enjoyment as a large herd! <grin> A Jacobean Feast? A tea party? WHATEVER it turns out to be - it will be just as merry and fun filled as those held by Sir Piers! Who knows, when he hears of all the fun, maybe he'll join us! We don't want to miss this opportunity to SEE the old Dutton Manor House and their churches and their graves.....and Chester and Sherborne...and to meet you and the other assembled cousins.....and to soak up lots of merrie ole' England!! WOW----I'm getting excited! Four months to go? How will I ever wait that long!! Phyllis --- packing my bags! -----Original Message----- From: Colin Dutton [mailto:colin.dutton@btinternet.com] Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2000 5:39 PM To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Sherborne Duttons Hi everyone, Just a quick note to advise you all that I will be going down to meet young Byron Hadley next weekend, Friday 18th to Sunday 20th February. I will off course be armed with my camera, several rolls of film and my video camera and hopefully a small tape recorder (if it still works). I will come back on line when I get back to let you all know how I got on. UKin2K has had a very poor respone, I was under the impression that there were more than just a few Duttons out there who were interested in coming over and sharing some time together. Not to worry, it will still go on, maybe not with the Jacobean Banquet, I don't think there is enough for a banquet, maybe just a tea-party!! I will write again real soon. Regards to you all. Colin

    3. Hi John, Yes, there are many people doing work on the Dutton line. We seem to be a huge bunch. There are cousins in New Zealand, New Guinea, Australia, and all over America as well as in England--all in varying stages of working backward. There are many places to visit in Cheshire and other people will likely tell you more about the churches, maps, Dutton Hall, Sherborne Hall, etc. There are several folks going to England this summer, so, you might want to go when others are going. > > What sources would you > > folks recommend for medieval genealogy studies in Britain to verify and > > augment some of the (dubious) information I get off the web? Also, are > > there any good maps of the area which would show me parishes, townships, > > and other geographical regions of a couple hundred years ago? Sir Peter Leycester, 1673, published "Leycester's Historical Antiquities." This is the definitive work on the Dutton line. The accepted scholarly source for Dutton genealogy is by George Ormerod who used Leycester's work in his "History of the County Palatine and City of Chester" (first published in London: 1819). The Helsby's edition (I think, 1972) is the source accepted by scholars today. Ormerod's book is out of print, it is in the Oversized and Rare Book collection at Ohio State and therefore not accessible to a working person. You can order a copy from the LDS on microfilm (I do not have the film #). Ormerod provided sources for Leycester's work; however, scholars today say that the Dutton line really needs to be done by a SCHOLAR using MODERN SOURCES. (It has been over 300 years since Leycester's work!!) Bits and pieces of genealogy, regarding wives and so forth, may be gleaned from the Complete Peerage (THE source for medieval genealogy). I have begun a project to redocument the medieval Dutton line with modern sources from English court records. While I am not a "genealogy scholar," I have received some guidance from Paul C. Reed, FASG, who is a highly respected medieval scholar. I have managed to redocument the Duttons of Dutton and part of the Duttons of Hatton with the Deputy Keepers Record. You can check out my work at http://www.genealogy.dutton.net. Information marked with a DKR is a modern source. Not all the data has been redocumented, so, be aware of where I put the source info. Eventually, I want to re-document all the data, but it is a BIG job. Do you want to help? 3. You should probably receive a few replies on this one. The Dutton's can be found in Leycester's Historical Antiquities of which I have made an online copy on my web site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~amcolan. Go to the bottom of the First Dutton's page and you'll find a link to the document. Also try the Dutton-L list as well. > -----Original Message----- > From: John L. Also interred in the same vault were Henry J. Wykoff, Henry S.(G?) Wykoff, and Sophia Wykoff. A rather complete history of the cemetery is provided, together with a listing of everyone who is (or was) interred in their vaults. A very interesting site. Jim Dutton

    2. I am interested in the Georgia/Gwinnett Co. line. My g grandfather William Joshua DUTTON (Will) b. 1868 m. Mary Francis (Fanny) b. 1870 They had abt 11 children. 1. Jonah 2. Mamie 3. Dolly 4. Ethy or Ethie 5. Bertie 6. Alma 7. Myrt 8. Quill 9. Claude 10. Charlie We visited an Uncle John when I was small but I'm not sure if it was my grandmother's brother or her uncle. He seemed older than grandmother to me. Will had a brother called Bud. His wife was Dora but I don't know his given name. They had a son Jack and a daughter Dixie, she had a club foot. I think they had an other daughter but I never meet her. Will and Fanny are buried at Mt. Zion Church in Snellville. More Duttons are buried there but I don't have that info. Next time I go I will make a list of all. I only took pictures of the head stones I need when I first started, not knowing I would need them all at some point. I hope this will link some of us. 3. Hello Everyone, I just saw Jackie's post on DUTTON's in Georgia in the Civil War. It is amazing because I have been thinking about re-posting my DUTTON line on the list all day today just in case anyone might have any new information. The Chandler Dutton that Jackie listed in her post is my great-great-grandfather. Chandler served in Co. K, 5th Inf. C.S.A., Upson Guards, during the Civil War. I'm not sure who Chandler's parents were yet, or any other relatives, but I do believe he has a strong connection to the other Dutton's in Georgia at this time. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have any other information on these Dutton Families in Georgia. We have previously been in contact with Sue Dutton Rodgers, who thinks that Chandler may be descended from the Jeremiah Dutton line in some way. Here is some information on Chandler's line. Chandler's son, William D. Dutton, is my great-grandfather. Thanks for any help anyone can give. Chandler DUTTON: - b. 1828 in SC. - died Bef. June 1900 in GA. - Parents listed on Census as born in SC. - Married (1) Sarah (?), b. 1829. Children Of Chandler DUTTON and Sarah: 1. Parthenia DUTTON - b. 1852 in GA. 2. Frances C. DUTTON - b. 1853 in GA. -Married (2) Margaret V. Dilda, dau. of Dennis Dilda. - born Jan. 1845 - died After June 1900 in GA. - Census lists Father born in SC, Mother born GA. Children of Chandler DUTTON and Margaret: 1. William D. DUTTON, b. 1860-d. 1931 - m. WYATT. 2. Elizabeth J. DUTTON, b. 1863. 3. George Washington DUTTON, b.1866 - d.1950.- m.ERWIN. 4. Nancy E. DUTTON, b. 1868. 5. James B. DUTTON, b. 1869 - d. 1933. 6. Alice B. A. DUTTON, b. 1872 - married ERWIN. 7. Leah (?) C. DUTTON, b. 1874. 8. John C. DUTTON, b. abt. 1877. 9. Mary DUTTON, b 1879. 10. Marion Bartow DUTTON, b. 1883 - d. 1959. 11. Luther G. DUTTON, b. 1886 - d. 1940. Chandler is found on the 1850 and 1860 Gwinnett Co., GA. census. After that we find Chandler and family on the 1870 Gordon County, GA. census, where he, and his family are also found in subsequent years. 3. I have another FTM CD/ROM, #170, "Immigrants to the New World, 1600s-1800s" that has an article discussing the factual evidence to support who was actually on the Welcome. John Dutton isn't even mentioned as someone who was thought to be on it, but, in fact, was not. One point made was that Quakers living in the north would likely have boarded a ship out of Liverpool which was much closer to, if not in, Chershire where John Dutton most likely lived. John did come to America in 1882, which is documented in Cope. > -----Original Message----- > From: Edward Dutton [mailto:areduton@coffey.com] > Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2000 9:46 AM > To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: PASSENGER LISTS > > > Not to take anything away from Gilbert Cope and his work(s); GENEAOLOGY OF > THE DUTTON FAMILY OF PENNSYLVANIA > and THE DUTTONS OF CONNECTICUT. > The immigration lists have more than 42 Duttons who > immigrated before 1800, and many after that in varying > locations. 3. Betsy, I see that you are still puzzled. > I'm very aware that families intermarry, I run a RootsWeb mailing list for > cousin marriages and have several cousin marriages in my ancestry. The > reason why I don't think this is the case is that I've got families that > cover a wide area, different social structures and so far I've found no > evidence that any of them are related. > > My ancestors on my Mother's side that I found in Dick's files were moneyed > people in Yorkshire, England (WILKINSON) that later aligned with English > Royalty > > My ancestors on my Father's side that I found in Dick's files (MOORE) were > not moneyed people and lived in the southern areas of England in the > Devonshire area (I understand there may be/could be some common ancestor > between these two families way back... [added note: this family's research > goes back to 1567 with no trace of MOORE that I can find in it] - if so, I'd > like to find it) > > The ancestors on my Husband's side that I found in Dick's files (SAUVE dit > LaPLANTE, SAUVE, LaPLANTE) were French Canadians and immigrated from France. > There should be NO common link between this family and the two listed above. > > See why I'm perplexed? You seem to be assuming that the link between the various families is a direct one in earlier years. It almost certainly isn't, given the differences in origins. But that doens't mean they might not be genuinely linked in Dick's data. Here is one possible explanation. Assume that one of the thousands of descendants of your WILKINSON family of England, a Marie WILKINSON lived in California in 1930s. And that person married a Joshua HALE (a name you don't have in your ancestry at all). And assume that this Joshua HALE was the descendant of a Morris HALE who lived in New Jersey in 1720. And assume that Morris HALE's wife was Abigail WAINWRIGHT (another name you don't have in your ancestry). Further assume that Abigail's sister was Mary WAINWRIGHT who married a Joseph WALES (another name you don't have). And further assume that Mary and Joseph had a direct descendant Arthur FITCH who lived in Ohio in 1930 and married a Felice LaPLANTE, who happended to descend from your French-Canadian LaPLANTE family. In this way both WILKINSON and LaPLANTE could be in a genealogy database and there would be a link between them (the one I just described). But it would NOT be a direct ancestral link, nor would it be a simple link by a single marriage. Rather, to describe the link one would have to run up and down a number of family's ancestries, jumping from tree to tree at marriage points. I know that Dick built his file by combining material from many different genealogies. He imported into his database many of the post 1880 DUTTON family descendants living n Chester County that I had researched and gave to him in a computer file. He could easily have combined data from different people researching (in this hypothetical) WAINWRIGHT and WALES and - voila - the link between your WILKINSON and LaPLANTE families would have emerged. Yet, with 250,000 records in his file and these being ancillary to his DUTTON research he probably would not have known the link actually existed. So even if he were alive today, hw would be as surprised as you are to find it. In point of fact, the link could be even more exotic than what I have described. The one I described only requires 3 marriages (WILKINSON-HALE in the 1930s in California, HALE-WAINWRIGHT in the 1720s in New Jersey, and FITCH-LaPLANTE inthe 1930s in Ohio). It may well require 8 or 11 marriages. Hope this helps. Doug Hall
