    1. Bud Frogs virus is a HOAX

    3. You recently sent, or received, a message that began >> > READ THIS IMMEDIATELY! >> > > >> > Someone is sending out a very cute screen >> saver >> of the >> > > >> > Budweiser Frogs. If you download it, you >> will >> lose >> > > >> > everything! Your hard drive will crash > [snip remainder] Hi: This message has been semi-automatically generated. The recipients list has been edited to avoid creating another kind of chain letter "virus". If you are someone that I like to get real news from, as in "What is your family up to?" please do not take what follows personally. The tone comes from my receiving way too many of the kind of message that occasioned this response. For real news, I *STILL WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!!* That being said; please, in the future, do NOT forward virus alerts of any kind, shape, size, or pattern to me. I will take my chances with my frequently-updated Norton Anti-virus, and my subscription to reputable technical newsletters. In the event something gets through, I have recent tape backups of everything on my hard drive, and multiple backups of my irreplaceable data (bible study notes, genealogy, and J.R.R. Tolkien). Please go to http://www.kumite.com/myths/ and read why "Budweiser Frogs Screen Saver Virus" is just another in a long, long, long, tedious list of internet virus and chain letter hoaxes. In fact, the hoax IS a virus, because well-intentioned people cause the MESSAGE to replicate, taking up internet bandwidth, using up hard disk space, and wasting the recipients' time reading and/or researching. Not only that, but the large block of seeming garbage that your e-mail client may have displayed at the beginning of the message is the forwarding header, which is a goldmine of valid e-mail addresses for unscrupulous spammers (or worse). You will notice that it is gone from this reply. Etc., etc., etc., as the King of Siam said. There are a number of decent sites on the Web that will tell you about real viruses. Symantec's, for instance, or ZDNet's. That is where I get my virus information. Virus hoaxes, like the worst of the Y2K nonsense, are a form of fear-mongering. I am a Christian. Some of you will not share that with me, but it will help you understand where I am coming from. My response is: God has not given us a spirit of fear; but, he HAS given unto us a spirit of POWER and of LOVE and of a SOUND MIND. If you should think that "this" virus alert or chain letter is different: it isn't. If you think that I will appreciate you making an exception for "that" chain letter: I won't. Darrell A. 3. Hi Colin--- So glad to hear from you. The arrangements sound terrific. I know you're working hard on this one and we all appreciate it! As for WHEN? I guess I'm leaning towards the end of June also. Really looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the group. Stay in touch! Phyllis

    3. Hi everyone. I am in contact with a hotel group who have a beautiful hotel in Cheshire that looks as if it would be great for you all to stay at, also they have another hotel near to Sherborne but alas not one near to London (Dutton Hall) so I'm afraid we must wait Charles Sherborne Dutton's results there. I hope to find out tomorrow their availability through June for both hotels so that I can publish some dates for you to agree upon, also I will try to negotiate a reduction in rates seeing that a few rooms will be needed. If you would like to look at the hotel in Cheshire, try typing the following address : http://www.a1tourism.com/uk/wildboar.html I'm sure that you will like what you see. It is situated adjacent to Tiverton where my own ancestry is based and so it will be a poignient reason for me to be there. Their is a choice of hotel near to Sherborne, namely :- Stonehouse Court Hotel, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire Manor House Hotel, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire I'm not yet sure which is the nearer or the better, but I guess you will find them by substituting the names of stonehousecourt or manorhouse for the above wildboar in the e-mail address, or by removing everything to the right of uk/ may in fact produce a list to choose from. Good hunting. Regards for now, I will hopefully e-mail you tomorrow evening. Colin Dutton

    3. Dear Colin, I missed your proposed schedule, probably because of email problems in PNG. In fact I have not seen anything sent by you for some considerable time. Would you mind sending copies of everything relevant to your plans so far to me directly. My wife Joy and I will probably not be able to join you for the full tour in the bus, as our itinerary is dependent upon the date of a wedding in Hawaii that has not been fixed as yet, so therefore make your plans to suit everybody else and we will try to catch up with you where-ever our paths can cross. If we should miss the tour altogether, we would still like to call on you Colin while we are in England and get your advice on various matters genealogical, if this convenient to you. I am also in favour of your two ideas of: (i) A regular and moveable feast of gatherings of Duttons through out the world; and (ii) the creation of a Dutton CD. Both of which will take a lot of work on some peoples part. I would be interested in participating in a necessarily small way to any joint effort that may develop in respect of either or both projects. Our itinerary in England involves vesting both London and St. Boswells near Edinburgh, as our fixed points. We had thought to drive one way via Dutton country in Cheshire etc, and to return the other way by train. Which direction we drive, North or South, and the reverse direction in which we train is flexible and would depend on the best timing for us to intercept and join everyone else on the tour. So we wait will wait for your plans before we finalise ours. In the meantime can you please advise us where to find the Stoke Newington School in relation to London so that we can add that into our driving plan. 3. Hi Sheila, Just a note to reassure you that I am still around and okay. I only get a chance to log onto my e-mails about once a week if I'm lucky due to work and other commitments, however, I have been looking into things in the background. I have secured the use of a school minibus (17 seater - including the driver) for most of the week (not fridays) at a cost of a donation plus petrol (gas). Also, I'm looking into hotels in Cheshire to fit you all in (bearing in mind I still don't know who is definately coming) and trying to keep your costs to a minimum whilst maintaining a good standard of facilities. Also, I am trying to get a hotel that is of historical value and not something thrown together in the last decade or so. I am still waiting to hear from Charles Sherborne Dutton re hotels in the south of England nearer to London and Stoke Newington School to finalise an itinerary. I published a suggested itinerary a few weeks back but only had a few responses, do I take it that this is what people want or do you want something else out of the trip over to the UK? I realise that time is getting on and June will soon be upon us, but I am no nearer knowing when you all intend to come over. We can arrange the itinerary to fir into any week irrespective to hitting Mid-Summer's Day and I would like to arrange it to dates that suite the majority and not force people to go along with my suggestions. Could everyone that is hoping to come over please reply to this message and give me the best dates for your convenience. Please leave the reply open so that everyone gets to read it as it may help people to make up their minds if they see dates duplicated. I am really looking forward to meeting my overseas Cousins and I do hope that some of the Duttons over here will also respond and join in. This event may be a one off and may never happen again, but conversely, it may be the first of many meetings, not just in the UK but in several venues around the world, we are unique, let's lead the way. I also mooted my thoughts on collating and combining everyone's Dutton information and publishing is on a CD to be distributed amongst ourselves and any othet interested parties, what do you all think of this idea, could Mike handle this or do we have a Dutton out there with the time and energy to do it. That's it for now, kind regards to you all. 3. Hi, I've seen the recent e-mails about invasion of privacy ...but I'm in search of my father. I'm looking for any information on a William Henry Dutton who lived in Atlanta in the early 60's. He may still be there. He was born on March 10, late 40's. He was in the navy in the 60's on the USS Essex, ported in Quonset Point Rhode Island. His mom's name is/was Lois I believe. And she had remarried to a Mr. Turner by the early 60's. His mom lived in East Point in 66. I would love to find a living relative of this line to correspond with. It's a very bare branch of my tree as of yet. I've traced two other lines back to the 1400-1600's. I must admit this search of mine has turned into quite the hobby. So thank you so much for the time, and I hope to hear from you soon. Who knows...this could be you or someone you know. Cyndi

    3. Hello all, http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/wc6.html Here is link to rootsweb's privacy statement regarding gedcoms of the deceased which is totally unreasonable as opposed to their policy regarding gedcoms from the living. They have a 100 year rule regarding living people that they encourage submitters to not override. They even tell the gedcom owners to remove the living IMMEDIATELY if someone complains about their family being on the internet. Yet they REFUSE to do anything about gedcoms from the deceased!!! Now if Jean could come up with the sign in inforamation and the password we could modify that database oursevles with her help. But according to their policy--you are up a creek without a paddle and SO WHAT! Maybe we should do a class action suit!! Carole

    3. Whether this is already common knowledge, I dont know, but.... The book "Timpsons English Villages" by John Timpson (published BCA / Headline Book publishing 1992) includes a short chapter on Baron Dutton etc, and some photos of memorials. Certainly interesting enough to get a library copy if you can! Timpson wrote a series of books about English curiosities (towns, buildings customs etc.) All fascinating. I must add this isn't an advert, just a recommendation! Paul Dutton

    3. Hello listers I am still trying to find any trace of George and Rebecca DUTTON. They seem to have "popped up" in Mansfield in 1815 to have a son William baptised. William next appears on the 1841 to 1881 censuses in Mansfield Woodhouse. Both George and son William were Stone masons; any clue there? Does anyone have any links or records of this DUTTON family, or any ideas where to look next? ps William DUTTON married Ann CLARKE of Pinxton, and were the only DUTTON family in Mansfield Woodhouse in 1841. They had 11 children. There must be a good chance that any DUTTONS in Mansfield Woodhouse are descended from this line? Thanks Paul Dutton

Genealogy is about DEAD >relatives--not living ones!! [snip rest of message] Hi, Carole and cousins: I disagree completely about genealogy being about dead relatives, not living ones. What if the genealogical books we look at today had been written by people that refused to publish anything about the living? But that is not the main point of this message. I would like to think that it might still be possible to keep my personal information personal, but I am afraid that genealogical sites of any kind are way, way down on the bottom of the list when it comes to the dangers of such things as identity-stealing. Birthdates, to take one example, are available to the dishonest in so many ways that you would be amazed. So my "genealogical" information is available on the Web, at: http://home.sprynet.com/~darrellm/ Now before you jump to the conclusion that I don't care about privacy, let me assure you to the contrary. One example: I live in the Chicago suburbs. Two grocery store chains here, Jewel and Dominick's, offer discounts to people who have one of their mag-stripe cards. Although the nearest Jewel to my residence is an easy walk, and I have to drive to the nearest Dominick's, I have a card from Dominick's and not Jewel. Why? Because Jewel required my personal information for me to get a card, Dominick's did not. The problem with privacy is that I desire to be identified and accepted as who I am, so I can do things that are important to me: make purchases on line, have access to my home web page space while preventing its abuse by others, obtain services such as ancestry.com for which I have paid, etc. This is necessary because people cannot be trusted to choose to do only what they ought to, and so I do not like the idea that someone might pretend to be me. How do I balance the requirement that Sprynet, my ISP, know enough about me to let me log on, with my desire that Sprynet know nothing about me at all? At the moment, the answer is a password. Other areas of my life use other methods. At my bank, my mother's maiden name is Smith. Actually, it's something else, but I assure you the bank doesn't think it is Dutton. Next time I change banks, I think I'll use a Klingon mother's maiden name <grin>. I use a credit card to make purchases on line, as a sort of password, but think how much I had to divulge in order to get that card. As long as I do not care if anyone knows who I am, and especially if I do not ask anyone to trust that they will be paid for what they have given me, I can maintain an amazingly high level of privacy. Voluntarily homeless people, for example, have that luxury. Always pay cash, even for a car; pay cash rent to a landlord who doesn't require a credit check; put your utilities under an assumed name; for heaven's sake don't log on to the internet, except through your local library (if your library doesn't require identification in order to get a library card); and shop at Aldi's, which has low prices and no discount card. If I did all these things and more of the same, I could practically drop off the face of the earth. But do I really want to? I am a Christian. Not all of you will share that with me, but you may wish to understand where I am coming from. As a Christian, I am faced with the admonition to "walk in the light." That means to live a life that is not hidden from my fellow human beings. It does not mean that I should deliberately be stupid about my finances, or expose my children to human predators. But God assures me if I will trust, not some civil right but him, that any human action that affects me will be within his permitted plan. Given that, I try to be reasonably cautious but don't get excited about things. "God has not given me a spirit of fear, but has given me a spirit of power, and love, and a sound mind." Just a thought. Darrell Darrell A. Martin until recently proud of my Vermont birth currently in exile in Addison, Illinois darrellm@sprynet.com

    3. My daughter had an experience with this sort of thing recently. She and her husband applied for a loan and were turned down based on her credit report. It wasn't HER credit report! After some investigation, it was discovered that a young lady close to her in age had been using her Social Security number for the last 4 years. She had open arrest warrants in a neighboring county. The girl claimed that she had lost her SS card and the SS people gave her this number over the phone. Of course, they deny having ever done that and offered my daughter a new number! This would wipe out the bad information, butit also wipes out her good work record and she'd loose credit for it! Ironically, my daughter and this other girl actually worked for the same employer for a short while and their payroll people didn't even catch it! To make a long story short, The SS dept refused to prosecute, the county detective said there was nothing they could do, the girl got away with it, and my girl had to make some choices that effect the rest of her life and noone else's. Yes, BE CAREFUL what info you give! It is my belief that privacy is the foundation, if not the cornerstone, of all other personal freedoms. Anyway, that said and getting off of my soap box :) here is an article out of a genealogy newsletter that I receive. Mike ============ - Another Privacy Invasion? I normally do not get too concerned with the issue of personal privacy. However, this week I found a new Web site that concerns me. AnyBirthday.com allows you to search a free database of well over 135 million records for the birthdate of almost anyone in the United States. I went to that site and started testing it. Not only did I find my own date of birth, I also found the birthdates of almost everyone else that I tried. Of course, I did try to find the exact birthdate of my great-great-grandfather who was born around 1810. Unfortunately, this site doesn't have records back that far. Most of the records contained in their database are for living individuals. I find it a bit disturbing that my own birthdate along with about ten others that I checked on are available to anyone who wants to know this information and has access to the internet. Does this seem a bit scary and invasive to anyone else? You can look for birthdates at: http://www.anybirthday.com --------------------------------------------------------------- About the author: Dick Eastman is the forum manager of the four Genealogy Forums on CompuServe. 3. Hi I am not a Dutton descendant, that I know of. I am doing a one-name study of my surname SINKER and found a Dutton connection. I know it is a long shot but if any one thinks they know anything about the following, I would be pleased to hear from you.
