    3. Mike - You've done a fantastic job with the Dutton Hall web page! What a lot of work.....It's very evident that you've spent a lot of time and care on it. The pictures (even little) are stunning when viewed as a whole group. And the articles that Colin sent....just enhance and illuminate the whole story beautifully. Colin should be very proud that he was able to provide us with all of this wonderful material....and you should be very proud of the great job you did putting it all together. I'm sure that all of the descendants (on line) of Mass. John, Penna. John, as well as your Dunton cousins will be excited to see all of this - for Dutton Hall and it's incredible history belong to all of us don't they !! Thanks so very much for providing the vehicle for sharing this ancestral treasure ! Phyllis in Atlanta

    3. Saw the mail concerning the Dutton pedigree chart. I met Foster Brooks a few years ago when he called to tell me that he had the answer to my Dutton query in the OGS magazine. Eventually he invited me to his home and showed me the chart which the students had copied for him. It was much larger than 8"x10". He definitely told me that the chart was on a wall at the school. The copy he gave me sounds the same as Doug Hall's, and he indicated that he had photographed it. Sheri

    3. Lynne:  You don't say from what area your Peter Dutton might have been.  I have a database on the Duttons in Wythe County, VA and have a Peter Dutton b. abt 1817 in Wythe Co. Va, s/o Joseph and Christine Groseclose Dutton.   Joseph Dutton was s/o Adam Dutton of that county.  Adam Dutton descends from the German family Derting/Darting.  Some members of this family who descend from a Johann Derting of Germany gradually "evolved" until their name was Dutton.  This was a prolific family which spread out into Kentucky, Tennessee, and I think if you are having problems finding ancestors of your Peter Dutton, that might be the reason why.  I don't have any descendants on this Peter Dutton, but the fact that he named his first son Joseph might indeed indicate that this was his father's name.  Let me know if this fits at all, I have more on ancestors. This is not my line of Duttons, at least I don't KNOW that it is, (all of you who are seeing me struggle with my "orphan" Jeremiah Dutton, this is your cue to chuckle a little)  But as a result of looking for his parentage I am winding up with one of the largest databases around of Duttons in the South. 3. Doug Hall of New Hampshire wrote the following message. It has caused me to blow the dust off my copy of the Dutton chart and give you the specifics of what I have. Doug Hall wrote: >That chart sounds like it is also a copy of the one that I have made >available. Maybe yours is easier to read. Is the title "The Duttons of >Dutton co Chester"? IS there a coat of arms on the left side in the upper >half? Does the top of the chart begin with "Sveide, a Norse king D. 780 AD"? >And does it have "Compiled by P. H. Lawson F.S.A. Chester" at the bottom? If >so we are probably looking at two copies of the same chart. All the above info describes the chart exactly. Doug Hall wrote: >Do you know how the woman obtained a copy? If it is the same chart I have, >it may be that it was obtained from Foster Brooks of Kent, Ohio, or possibly >from the school now in the Dutton Hall in Sussex England. According to her story, she had recently returned from England. While there, she had been working on a distant line in her geneology and came across the chart. It is from England. Doug Hall wrote: >My copy is actually a photograph that is about 8 x 10 inches. When I get it >blown up and photocopied, there are some parts that are a bit blurry. Does >yours copy well? My chart seems to copy okay. Some of the recent entries, circa late 1800s to the 1950s, are less quality. The rest of the document has good clarity. It measures 30 inches by 42 inches. After calling a few places in town, I found that a representative cost for a copy is five dollars for the copy and ten dollars for a mailing tube and UPS ground to New Hampshire. For a total of fifteen dollars. If you are still interested in getting a copy of the Dutton chart, I suppose the best way to go about it is to send a check to me for fifteen dollars. I will do the footwork and get it out to you as soon as possible. My address is: Gail H. Dutton 9195 Abby Road Pocatello, ID 83204

    3. Dear Family Readers, My name is Gail Howard Dutton and I live in Pocatello, Idaho in the western United States. I decend from the Pennsylvania line of Duttons. Several years ago, I was living in Salt Lake City, Utah when I received a call from a woman who had been doing geneology on the Dutton line. She said she had some info which she wondered if it would be of interest to me. I went to her house and produced a chart of Dutton geneology which started about 700 AD with scandinavian ancestory. It continues into France then to England. The chart records the history of the Duttons as they developed in England. The last entries are of people in the 1950s living in England. This chart is about two feet by three foot. I would be happy to share copies with anyone interested in covering the cost of copying and mailing. I guess that it would cost about three to five dollars to copy then whatever the postal charge is to get it to you. Let me know if you are interested and we can make arrangements. Gail H. Dutton

    3. Thanks for the information. There are several theories on Odard's ancestors only one of which I have on my site. There is another in Leycester's which I plan to pass on to everyone shortly. Also, Doug Hall posted another one several weeks back. Speaking of Royalty, we Duttons are also direct descendents of Hugh Capet, king of France in the 9th century. This line is through Muriel le Despenser who married Hugh Dutton(4th generation from Odard). I got this from an undocumented web site so take it for what it is worth. Muriel was also great aunt and great great aunt to the two Hugh le Despensers (father and son) who, through their close ties to Edward II, met with an untimely death at the hands of Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer, closely followed by Edward II himself. There is even a painting of the torture of Hugh le Despenser, which you can find on the web. > -----Original Message----- > From: Carole Malisiak [mailto:malisiak@midohio.net] > Sent: Tuesday, June 30, 1998 6:51 PM > To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Wm the Conqueror's Sister > > > Hi Curt, > I've been over to the Hull Royal Genealogical Database trying to find > descendents of Wm. the Conqueror and connections to Odard through the > Count of Eu (which I have not found). 3. Colin, Next time you are out and about looking for Dutton-related locations, find your way to the Church of St. Peter, Aston By Sutton. It was in the churchyard of this little church that my father and I met D. W. Faulkner in September 1985. Mr. Faulkner was the warden of the church and he happened to be cleaning up the morning we stopped. There are some memorials to Duttons inside the church. We did not make a record of the various memorials; it might be useful to record them. They might have some dates or names that can confirm other information. It was Mr. Faulkner who told us he had a copy of a genealogical chart of the Duttons at his home (Sutton Hall at Sutton Weaver near Runcorn). We went there and he brought the chart out from behind the fireplace. That was when we realized that this chart provided a link (though undocumented) from John Dutton of Pennsylvania back into the Dutton line in Cheshire, England. We were unable to copy the chart at that time. But Mr. Faulkner later had the chart photographed and he sent us a print of the photograph about 8 inches by 10 inches in size. It is that print that I have had enlarged and that you just received. We never specifically asked Mr. Faulkner how he had come into possession of the chart (he was not a Dutton descendant at all) but it appeared that he had simply found the chart behind the chimney in Sutton Hall when he moved there some years before. Mr. Faulkner also told us by letter later in 1985 that he had met another American some years before who had been pursuing Dutton history in Aston. That was Professor Foster Brooks. My father and Professor Brooks corresponded in 1986. Prof. Brooks said that he had visited Dutton Hall in Sussex and that he had seen the chart there at the school and had paid some of the students to make a copy of it for him. Those students may be the "R.T.T. Essex, C. W. Humphery, and D. C. Eckford" noted on the chart. The copy they made for him may then have been photocopied and one of those ended up in Sutton Hall. At least that is what I believe to be the origin of this chart. Unfortunately we found out that Professor Brooks died recently. If you visit Dutton Hall sometime, you might take along the chart I sent you and inquire of the headmaster or whomever as to the current whereabouts of the original. From what Professor Brooks wrote to my father it appears that the original may actually have been mounted or painted on a wall somewhere at the school. If you are able to find the original, that might be the beginning toward figuring out who P. H. Lawson, its compiler is. I suspect he is/was a professional genealogist in Chester sometime in the 1960s. What would be aboslutely wonderful would be to discover the notes or materials from which P.H. Lawson developed the chart. There may even be a manuscript somewhere that was meant to accompany the chart. One other thought. If there is an association of genealogists in Chester, there may be some record of a P. H. Lawson. Lots of things to investigate when you get back from your California trip! 3. Following entry is from The Domesday Book, edited by Thomas Hinde, 1987, ISBN 0-09-161830-4 DUTTON (Duntune) - William FitzNigel; Edward the pre-conquest holder, from Osbern FitzTezzo; Odard from Earl Hugh. Hawk's Eyrie. All lands belonged to the king and Earl Hugh d'Avranches held it for the king. The remainder of the listed were ' under-tenants'. William FitzNigel had one farm/estate. Edward (whoever) had another from before the conquest that he got from Osbern FitzTezzo and he still held it at Domesday. Odard was holding the land in 1086 that he had received from Earl Hugh. Someone, probably Odard, raised hawks in Duntune based on the reference to the eyrie (aeyrie), which, by definition, is "a loftily placed nest of certain birds of prey, as the eagle".

Starkey, pp 68-69 Rocksavage, the great house of the Savage family at Clifton and the Brooke's mansion at Norton Priory no longer exist but the hall of the Dutton family improbably survives in a Sussex village. The story of its rescue and removal to the south of England is a remarkable one. In 1930 Mr. John Dewar of the whiskey distilling family inherited "Homestall", a couple of very old cottageswhich his uncle had made into one house at East Grinstead in Sussex. When visiting Cheshire Mr. Dewar saw Dutton Hall which had been used as a farmhouse for many years. Only the east side of the original quadrangle and Sir Piers Dutton's great hall remained and they were becoming derelict. Mr. Dewar bought Dutton Hall with the intention of building it on the East Grinstead house. Under the supervision of building experts, Dutton Hall was carefully taken down, the stones and timbers were numbered and transported to Sussex there to be re-erected and by 1933 the stately house of "Dutton Homestall" was complete. During the work of removal of Dutton, the great hall was stripped of its ceiling and this revealed massive oak frames with fine moulded shafts. Within the roof was a minstrel's gallery. The great door of the hall with its mullions and studs of iron and the six shields bearing the arms of the Dutton and Hatton families together with the ancient porch stand today exactly as they did in Cheshire as does the solar leading directly from the great hall. The building is now used as a boys' preparatory school.

    3. Hi Carole, The site that you listed only seems to follow the direct line of William the Conqueror. According to the lineage appendix, table 5, of "William the Conqueror", by David C. Douglas (1964, University of California Press), shows the line of the Counts of Eu. Robert, was before 1047, recognized as Compte d'Eu (Count of Eu). He fought at Hastings in 1066 with William the Conqueror, who was his nephew. He is listed as a landowner in the 1086 Domesday Book. This book lists him as dying in 1090. ("William the Conqueror", David C. Douglas, University of California Press, 1964 p.25) I show Robert as having a son named Guillaume (William) who married Helisende d'Avranches. They had sons, Odard, Edard, Wolmere, Horswyne, Wolfaith, and Nigel. This made Odard a kinsman of Hugh "Lupas" d'Avranches, Earl of Chester. Hope this helps. 2. Michael L. Dunton
    3. This is a forwarded message from Rootsweb . . . Mike =================== Hi, folks -- Well, it took almost two months longer than expected, but we're right now installing a SmartList hack that blocks file attachments (including VCARDS), HTML messages and enriched text postings. Sorry about the delay: things have been crazy around here. This note is to let you know how it works. When a poster sends something to a mailing list written in HTML, or with a non-plain-text attached file, the list server will send the poster's message back to them, with a note at the bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. A COPY OF THIS REJECTION MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO YOU AS WELL! That's because the poster may write back to you to complain or to ask for help, and it can be pretty confusing if they write a reply to a message that you never saw. So when you suddenly start getting messages from YOURLIST-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com, quoting some ungodly HTML mess that you never saw before, don't be alarmed. :-) It just means the list server is rejecting a MIME message that was sent to your list, and that you may get a response from the poster. This change is not currently something the listowner can turn on and off. Attachments will be blocked from every list alike. This might not be to the taste of some listowners, so we'll consider closely whether it would be safe to make it an optional setting. Thanks to Marc Nozell for finding the SmartList patch that was used as the basis for this fix!
