Hi all, Well, after three weeks travelling California with my family, I have arrived back, safe and sound to good old 'Blighty', but what a great three weeks they have been!! California is a great place to be, I dare say that the rest of the USA is the same, I hope so!, but I must say that California and its people are wonderful, more than I could ever have dreamed. Before I went, I had this aweful impression of Americans as being loud, rich and obnoxious people, who could only be patronising and say "have a nice day"!!, this was changed somewhat since joining Roots Web Dutton, but how wrong I was, Americans are warm and friendly people that do say "have a nice day", but they really mean it. I am converted!! Seriously, in all of my 46 years, I have never had such a great time among such great people, thank you America. I will not bore you all with the details, but I must draw reference to Monterey. I was always lead to believe that this was a great place to visit and indeed it lived up to this repututation, however, I had the best ever upgrade, I met a Dutton there, wrong, I met four Duttons there!!! I cannot put into words what my heart told me when I first met John Dutton, (from Sacremento) his wife Jane, son William and grand-daughter Bonnie (hope this is spelled correctly), but it was like finding the 'Holy Grail'. John was all and more than I expected, he gave us his time to ensure that we all had a wonderful day. He has already told you that he took us for a drive along 17-mile-drive (WOW), he told you that he took us to Clint Eastwood's restaurant in Carmel for lunch (WOW WOW), what he didn't tell you was that he picked up the bill, what a gent. John and Jane will always be special in my life and I cannot wait to see them again, whether here or back in the USA, but I owe him one and he WILL collect!! Let's all look at the millenium, what a great time to get together, what's the chance of a Dutton reunion in 2000 (and Duntons Mike), over in the USA maybe, here in Cheshire if you can all aford it, be we owe it to one another to get together. Let's start planning and saving now, any ideas folks? That's all for now, I am still jet-lagged and tired out to write any more, but before I go, any requests from over the pond or beyond, is there anything that I can try to find out for you all. Regards for now and sincere love and best wishes to you all. Colin. (very contented - thanks America!!)
Hello All, I'm sitting here with 3 Dutton charts. A quick glance makes it clear that Dick Dutton's chart and Gail Dutton's chart are photocopies of the same original. And the chart I circulated was a photocopy of a photo of a hand-made copy of the same original. Of the three, Dick's reproduction is the clearest and Gail's is a close second. Now that these other two have made their way into circulation, I would recommend to anyone who paid for a copy of the one I sent out back in May (or whenever that was...) should upgrade and get a copy from Dick. You'll find it much easier to read and the handwriting has a bit of class (not quite caligraphic but almost). Doug Hall
Hi to all you descendents of Jeremiah DUTTON b. abt 1745. You might want to take a look at the DUTTON data at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/S_Peterson/myfamily.htm Maybe there is some data there that will add something to what you already have. Dick Dutton

This is from the web page cited below: This list is taken from the plaque in the church at Dives-sur- Mer, Normandy, France, where William the Conqueror and his knights said mass before setting sail to invade England in 1066. It lists all the knights who took part in the invasion. This is from "Sons of the Conqueror" by L. G. Pine, pp 161-2 ... and that complied [sic] by Monsieur Leopold de Lisle, in the church as Dive, 485." As the name of the Dive Roll is mentioned, it is necessary to add Planche's later remarks on this and other lists compiled, not in England, but in France. "The recently publilshed lists of Messrs. de Magny and Delisle, while supplying some hundreds of names, are unfortunately unaccompanied by the evidence on which they have been recorded, and consquently cannot be confidently quoted either in corroboration or in contradiction of the older catalogues, varying as they do from them in many important instances and occasionally from each other." Hi All, For those of you that got one of the various copies of the chart, there is one abreviation that was explained to me while in London. It is "d.s.p." It stands for a Latin phrase which means "died without surviving issue." For example, the John that we were wondering about being MA John (he wasn't) had a single daughter by his second wife (first wife was childless) but both mother and daughter died in childbirth. Therefore, John had no surviving (still living) issue when he died. The more I look at that chart the more questions it raises. Dick Dutton Researching my family tree! Hi Dick! I received my chart today! I have more questions than answers!! Is this chart considered a secondary source? There are no Counts of Eu on there. And who is Malahu of Möre? Does this mean he is an uncle of Rollo? A brother of Rögnwald El of More? Is El an abbreviation for Earl? It looks like Odard is a son of Emme and Ivo, Viscount of Cotentin. Doesn't this sort of revise our tree considerably? I know I'll have more questions later cause I've already seen some abbreviations I don't understand!! Amazed in Ohio, Carole
Greetings Relatives Near & Afar: Last weekend, my family and I had the great pleasure of meeting "Cousin" Colin Dutton, his wife Judith, and sons Glenn and Christopher at Monterey, CA. We started the morning off by motoring along the scenic 17 Mile Drive between Monterey and Carmel. The coast's standard fog at this time of the year started burning off as we approached the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Being a golfer, Colin substituted a camcorder for his golf clubs and got some great shots of the course. We stopped for lunch in Carmel at Clint Eastwood's Hog Breath Inn. Unfortunately for the boys, the former mayor of Carmel wasn't present. Following lunch, we walked to a nearby park in perfect weather conditions. Colin brought out and described the photographs he had taken along his 100 mile or was it kilometer drive. His narration and the photo quality were superb. If you were impressed with the Dutton Hall photos, this was the icing on the cake. Many thanks again, Colin, for bringing them over the pond. We concluded the day with a trip to Point Lobos State Reserve which I consider a "must" for anyone visiting this area. The weather cleared and Colin got some great video of our Pacific coastline. Jane and I were very interested in Judith's and the boys' impressions of the Golden State. The only downside on their trip was Los Angeles which is understandable. Having said all this some of you may be surprised to learn that I was raised in Massachusetts. Colin, Jane, William, Bonnie, and I hope you and the family had a safe and enjoyable trip back to the Mother Country. We hope to see you again either in Cheshire or Northern California where we will share the redwoods, wine country, and the gold country. Regards, John
Carole, Regarding the list is taken from the plaque in the church at Dives-sur- Mer, Normandy, France, on the list you will find several warriors from "d'Eu' or "of Eu". If you look on a map of France, this is located in Normandy. You will find the following people listed: d'Eu Comte Robert d'Eu Guillaume d'Eu Osberne You probably already have Count Robert of Eu, and his son William of Eu in your database. I suspect the middle name Daltonor was really meant to indicate "Dalton or" i.e. the submitter did not know if her name was Dalton or Dutton. Hi Everyone, On 16 Jun, just before I went on vacation to Europe I posted a message to this List entitled Is MA John on the chart??? It was an intellectual question based on some uncany similarities with one of the branches found on the chart and the data that some of us have in our data bases on the ancestors of our MA John. At that time I had never heard of "Supplement to Collin's Peerage of England" While I was away, on the 3rd of Jul, Doug Hall posted a well thought out and documented message that, in his words, eliminates this possibility. (I have both of these messages on file if anyone wants copies). The research that I was able to do at the Genealogists Society in London confirms Dougs conclusion and reasoning 100%. And, unfortunately, in the limited amount of time I had for research, I was not able to find anything that might throw any light on the real lineage or birth of MA John - leaving him, still, a complete mystery. Noone is more disappointed than I. My worst fear is the possibility that the uncany similarities found between the chart and my data base is the result of some dunderhead, or worse, unscrupulous individual and the lineage as we believe we know it from MA John to the ancient DUTTONs-of-Dutton and of all of us that descend from him is just a pipe dream. On the plus side, we know for sure there was a John DUTTON in MA before the court in the 1630s - and he had to come from somewhere and had to have parents! All we have to do is find them! Comments and suggestions are solicited and welcome. Dick Dutton Researching my family tree! To everyone who ordered a chart (and gave me a mailing address) _ 22 copies were mailed this PM. I hope they meet your expectations and prove to be useful and enjoyable. Half are already paid. The price for the other 11 is US $10. For future orders the price will be US $15 unless I get 5 or more prints made at one time. Then we could drop back to US $10 again. Susie - the postage to Canada turned out to be cheaper than to the US - by 3 cents. There is some kind of international rate called "Small Packet" that seems to be a good deal - assuming the chart gets there. Let me know when it does. Doug - all three of your orders are on the way. If anyone who ordered a chart doesn't get one within a week please let me know. They are coming by First Class US Postal Service. Dick Dutton Richard A. Dutton 325 Beal Parkway Ft. Need info on the following: Mary Dutton (b. abt 1746), daughter of David Dutton (born abt 1721), married an unknown male YEARSLEY abt 1765. I know it's vague, but that's all I have and I want to get as much on my Duttons as possible. Erin Peters
Just playing around....found some fun/interesting things. Try www.hamrick.com/names Ask for the name Dutton and it will give you a map of the US showing how we are distributed across the country. Also, was looking at the Chester, PA web page and discovered that apparently they have a whole collection of photographs.......taken by GILBERT COPE.....from 1887 to 1918 showing Chester Co. landscape, families and Quaker community. So when he wasn't writing family histories.....he was out snapping pictures around the countryside! They're not accessible on the net......but they're on my "must see" list for my next trip to Pennsylvania! Has anyone ever seen this collection? phyllis

I'll give everyone the rest of this week to place an order and then get the prints made and mailed out next week. To everyone that has already ordered: Some checks have already arrived but you are welcome to send your's at your discretion - I will mail all orders at the same time whether or not I have received payment.
