You know you're taking genealogy too seriously if... You are the only person to show up at the cemetery research party with a shovel. To put the "final touches" on your genealogical research, you've asked all of your closest relatives to provide DNA samples. You were instrumental in having "non-genealogical use of the genealogy room copy machine" classified as a federal hate crime. Your house leans slightly toward the side where your genealogical records are stored. You decided to take a two-week break from genealogy, and the US Postal Office immediately laid off 1,500 employees. Out of respect for your best friend's unquestioned reputation for honesty and integrity, you are willing to turn off that noisy surveillance camera while she reviews your 57 genealogical research notebooks in your home. The armed security guard, however, will remain. You plod merrily along "refining" your recently published family history, blissfully unaware that the number of errata pages now far exceeds the number of pages in your original publication. During an ice storm and power outage, you ignore the pleas of your shivering spouse and place your last quilt around that 1886 photograph of dear Uncle George. The most recent document in your "Missing Ancestors" file is a 36-page contract between you and Johnson Billboard Advertising Company. Ed McMahon, several t.v. cameras and an envelope from Publishers Clearing House arrive at your front door on Super Bowl Sunday, and the first thing you say is, "Are you related to the McMahons of Ohio?" "A Loving Family" and "Financial Security" have moved up to second and third, respectively, on your list of life's goals, but still lag far behind "Owning My Own Microfilm Reader." A magical genie appears and agrees to grant your any one wish, and you ask that the 1890 census be restored.

I probably got the name and birth date for Odard's wife from another web page. I've had too many genealogy irons in the fire to go back and look at the information more closely. You're right about John not being 'bur. at' the pulpet. When I looked again, it appears to say 'bur. nr'. I guess I was thinking about the persecution of the Quakers when I first read that. > -----Original Message----- > From: Phyllis Ryerse [mailto:phyllis@webnet.com] > Sent: Friday, February 05, 1999 1:21 PM > To: DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: an ODARD question ?? > > > This list has been very quiet..... > here's a question to see if you're all awake...(and to see if my > ISP has all > the bugs ironed out and whether I'm finally back on-line!) > > Although Cope/Leycester does not give any birth or death records > for ODARD, > nor does he provide the name of his wife------I've been looking at Curt's > updated web page and find that he has provided us with that new data. > WOW! - CURT! > ......where did you come up with this interesting new info?? > (BTW, I like the looks of your updates!) > My only problem with this new wife is that she seems to be a lot > older than > ODARD....but well, that could happen. >Now, I understand that the Quakers counted their months from March thru >Feb, with (1mo) in his book meaning March, etc. Am I correct in that? >Can anyone tell me if when Cope used that terminology for a birth date >or death date, etc, that he always meant the March thru Feb thing?? I >know that further along in the book he begins to use the name of the >month. Also, how do you figure the years? i.e. if a birthdate is (11 >mo.) which would be January, do you assume the year he has is correct?? Sue, For me this is another problem with these genealogy programs. If you put in "2/10/1685" you get February 10, 1685 instead of "2/10/1685". Even if the source has it right, you have to convert it to make sure the program gets it right! I have an original copy of Cope's books and even some correspondence between him and Dutton's who were alive as he was putting his material together. I assume that Cope used the date as it was available to him from his source. If his source told him that so-and-so was born 2nd month, then he recorded it that way. It may not even have been clear to Cope or even his source whether that meant February or April. But I also assume that almost always the use of the term "2nd month" meant April. If it had meant "February" probably would have been reported that way. I have seen some of the original meeting records (where births, deaths, and marriages are recorded) and they are consistently reported by Cope in the correct Quaker usage. >Also, before I get too deep into it, does anyone have any glaring >mistakes that were made in his book??? I can prove no glaring errors in his book as far as the Pennsylvania Duttons are concerned. There are holes in the listings where he had no source. He doesn't seem to have indulged in "maybe the son of" or "reported to have three children" for those in the later generations. I've used many other genealogies written during the late 1800 period of flamorous family histories that have proven to be quite a mess. Cope's work looks quite good in comparison. You will note how careful he is in simply quoting Omerod, not stating that English material as fact. He makes no claim to have found a link between John Dutton and the Cheshire Duttons. He is also quite careful about his lack of info regarding the origins of the Mass Duttons. On the whole, I trust Cope's book to a high degree. He seems to be meticulous and where the info I have is different from his is simply where he made no statement at all. He lacked the information or any degree of certitude to include it. Doug Hall
Someone recently responded to a posting I had for my Dutton/Else names asking for Dutton information on the following: Moses Dutton married Elizabeth ? had daughter, Sarah Dutton b. 1844 in Arkansas. Sarah married Joseph Phillips b. 1822 and they had a daughter Meely Ann Phillips who married Frank Musgrove. Is anyone familiar with this family? Thanks for your help. Doni
Hi Everyone, I'm new to the list. I'm looking for information on Chandler Dutton. Chandler was born about 1823/1826 in GA. He was married to Margaret (?). They were in Gwinnett Co., GA. in 1860, and later in Gordon Co., GA. in 1870. Census info says Chandler's Father and Mother were both born in South Carolina. I don't know what his parents names were as yet. Does anyone have any info on Dutton's in South Carolina (and any other places) that came to Georgia? Thanks for any help. Audrey P. This list has been very quiet..... here's a question to see if you're all awake...(and to see if my ISP has all the bugs ironed out and whether I'm finally back on-line!) Although Cope/Leycester does not give any birth or death records for ODARD, nor does he provide the name of his wife------I've been looking at Curt's updated web page and find that he has provided us with that new data. WOW! - CURT! ......where did you come up with this interesting new info?? (BTW, I like the looks of your updates!) My only problem with this new wife is that she seems to be a lot older than ODARD....but well, that could happen. But what really bothers me is that if her birth date is correct...she would have been 51 years old at the birth of their only son. That's a bit of a stretch. Any input here? I also have to question the similarity in the names of his "new" wife and that of his son, Hugh. Oh, and Curt....while I've got you on the line here.....I think you've got an error in Generation 30......John Dutton, the mayor of Chester. You've got him down as being burnt at the pulpit along with his son Geoffrey. I looked at that entry on the chart....and that word looks like BURIED --- not burnt. I would guess that they were buried under the floor ---near the pulpit. Ah well, a simple mistake.....you really need a magnifying glass to read all that small print! I have some other questions for the group - but let's see if this message makes it thru first!! Glad to be back. Phyllis in Atlanta
Hi Bob, I found the paper where I wrote down your father, grand father, etc. 1) Robert F. Dutton, California 2) John Ernest Dutton, b. 13 Oct 1885, and Pearle Howard 3) William Robert Dutton, b. 20 Sep 1858, and Ella Oglesbee 4) Nehemiah Dutton, b. 27 Dec 1830, and Phebe Huntsman 5) Robert Dutton, b. 2 Sep 1788, and Abigail Matson 6) David Dutton, b. abt 1740 and Hannah Rogers Is this correct? Your father was the son of my Great Uncle William (Will)? I have been unsuccessful in finding evidence that he really was a Senator. I am looking forward to hearing from you!!! :))) Carole Dutton Malisiak
Hi Mike! Did you ever find this book that you were looking for? If not, I found it in a library at the University of Cincinnati. I used NSCA Telnet and searched the library's catalog file from my home. Maybe there is a library closer to you were you could find it. Telnet saves me very much time. Thanks to Darrell A. Martin, Springfield, Vermont, and Nicolas Blackhurst of Chester, England for their explanation of FITZ. INDIANA: This month, I am offering to share my Indiana file upon your request to me. I attempted to find all the Duttons on the Indiana 1850 and 1860 Census Indexes. No guarantees, of course. I am looking for a M. O. or Melvin Dutton born probably before 1850, supposedly born West Virginia. His son Melvin O. was born 1869. Duttons: 170. Individuals: 204. Marriages: 41 (as apparent from census, and sometimes IGI reports). IGI data was merged for a number. The IGI is from microfiche, IGI, Indiana. The IGI has columns with reference to sources, but these numbers were not copied (I do have them). Sometimes they lead to actual county birth records or marriages. They are at random and not linked to families. Linked families are on the ANF (Ancestral File, LDS). PAF3 GEDCOM--which imports into most family tree programs such as Family Origins or WFT. These families are not linked in most cases, so some type of index search is necessary. This file should help with leads for Indiana searchers. Make your requests direct to me at Juno.com; I will then E-mail with an attached GEDCOM. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. P.H. Reaney's "A Dictionary of English Surnames" gives the following meaning for FITZ: Fitz, Fitze; Anglo-French fiz 'son.' It is apparently used to distinguish the son from the father.
