    3. Hi All, That was my thinking, as well. Got pretty excited!!! :-))) He would have been 24 years old in 1620. Old enough to have a wife and children born in England!!! Also, Sam, this John Dutton (1596) did not marry Mary Neeld. It was PA John Dutton (immigrated to PA in 1682 and came over on the ship WELCOME), baptized at Frodsham 26 June 1625 who married Mary Darlington, who later married John Nield after her first husband's death. So, Sam, I hope you have evidence that this John Dutton immigrated to America? Just can hardly wait to hear from ya! 1. DUTTON, John (1596)
    2. Hello Dutton Listers; It seems I've stirred up some controversy. I hope that's a good sign... For the first 8 generations of my ancestors (to 1746), leading toward John DUTTON of 1596 fame, I have done most of the research myself, because I am currently writing a book on my maternal grandfather's ancestors. I have visited the New England, USA, several times and have researched public and library records in little towns all along the way. Before 1746. the remaining 26 generations I have on my Dutton ancestors I have downloaded from Ancestral File at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Ancestral File, simply put, is a massive database of all the genealogical records of persons who have submitted them to same). Since 1987 I have been trying to track down proof that each individual record is accurate or inaccurate, whichever the case may be. As you're probably aware, the LDS Ancestral File does have many errors. If you are interested in receiving a gedcom of all the Duttons I have in my database, which will show you how I trace my lineage to John DUTTON 1596- I would be happy to E-mail it to you (it also includes 22 generations of the ancestry of John DUTTON who married Mary DARLINGTON, all the way back to a Niel II De St. SAUVEUR, born about 1000 AD of Normandy, France), but I don't think it is appropriate for submission to the list. It's too big (1,641 names), and not everyone will be interested in it. The gedcom I can E-mail to you takes a genealogical computer program capable of handling gedcom files generated from PAF 3.0 If you would like one, please let me know and I will send it to you. For those of you without gedcom capability, I can E-mail a large Word Perfect file with the main Dutton lines I have been working on if you will send me your address. Oh, I hope I'm not opening Pandora's Box... I cannot vouch for any of the information I have in my data base except the first six to eight generations before me. Sorry... 26 generations back in time (before 1746) have not yet been proven by my research. 1746 is just my page marker... I still have a LOT of research to do on the Dutton names. SAM

    3. Sam enquired about John DUTTON of Frodsham, Cheshire and his family. John was baptised at St. Lawrence's Parish Church, Frodsham. Overton is the area of Frodsham parish where the church is situated. As the name implies, it overlooks the town of Frodsham and from the church there is a clear view across the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey. This morning it was sunny (and cold) and the two cathedrals at Liverpool could be seen on the horizon. You must all come and visit us one day! The baptismal entry for 19 April 1596 reads, "John Dutton fil Jo. de Hall". The following entry may possibly be the marriage entry for John's parents: 24 Dec 1594. Jo. Dutton and Ann Brownent. Unfortunately, I shall be away for the next few days but when I return I will make a list of every DUTTON baptism, marriage and burial in Frodsham Parish Registers from 1558 to 1812. I will save it as a Word document and will email a copy to Sam, and to anyone else who may be interested. Regards, Edgar Gregory (Frodsham, Cheshire) egregory@ndirect.co.uk

    3. Hello! "Seasons of Love" Part 2 comes on television this evening at 9:00. In case you have not seen part 1, it is a ficitonal story of an early Ohio farm family who lived in Fairfiled County, Ohio, near Lancaster, sometime after 1825 when all the Indians were removed and before 1900 when cars were invented. It was written by a local Ph.D who was a renowned historian in Central Ohio. It presents, in fictional form, what life must have been like early in the settlement of Ohio and, thus, relevant to a lot of us who moved to Ohio from PA in the early to mid 1800s. I'm sorry but I do not know which of the big 3 networks is showing it. Carole

Thus, his very generous offer to send it directly to anyone interested would be the best we could do. It is true that a file saved as pure Text would be more universally compatible but I am always happy to get anything I can. Dick Dutton Researching my family tree! 3. Hi Robert, Please send me your Dutton genealogy file. Could you convert it to a 'plain text' first, though? I do NOT have MS Word 97 and my word processors would not be able to translate probably. I hope that this is not an inconvenience for you. You might want to post it on the Dutton list (Dutton Family Genealogy List <DUTTON-L@rootsweb.com>) also. I doubt that we would use the word "wives" in this >regard today. The behavior of the Normans was normal for the period in which they lived. It was not in the least abnormal. It may surprise most people to learn that not monogamy, loyalty to one's wife, nor respect for women were widespread in Europe before the 17th century. Women for the most part were objects to be used as men wished. Some men married and remained loyal, but a philanderer was not regarded as an especially vile form of humanity. Despite their rigidities in many things, the Puritans were among the first to make marriage an honored institution, but interestingly, they approved of divorce and remarriage if one party to a marriage wronged the other. The prevailing practice under the Roman and Anglican Churches was to prohibit divorce for any reason. I haven't the time to quote or paraphrase from histories of the 16th and 17th centuries, but any good history of the manners, morals, and social customs of the time will open your eyes open wide in amazement at the behavior our ancestors manifested not long before many of them crossed the pond to settle in North America. I hardly recognize them as my ancestors, their values seeming to to have differed radically from our's. 1. Book on Norman Origins
    2. Doug Hall
    3. Are you are looking for a book that describes the descent of the Norman dukes from the Viking age? Are you looking for some material describing what it was like where Odard came from? Try this: The Dukes of Normandy and their Origin by The Rt. Hon. Earl of Onslow, PC, GBE, FSA, FRHistS published by Hutchinson & Co., London The photocopy I have of some chapters does not include the date of publication, but it was sometime in the early-mid 20th century. When the Norsemen arrived in what was later to be called Normandy, they were not only not Christians, they were what the 16th and 17th centuries would have called pirates. Fathering children with one wife was hardly in their minds. Onslow says "By Rollo himself, who no doubt had wives in every port from the Baltic to the Seine, the matter would have been regarded as of the most trivial importance." I doubt that we would use the word "wives" in this regard today. Later generations of the dukes shared the experience of "taking" women who were not their married spouse and having children by them. William was known as William the Bastard first, William the Conqueror only later. This practice evidently extended throughout the Norman hierarchy. This was not a monogamous society, even after it became Christianized. This may be one of the reasons that there will never be a clear ancestry for Odard. While later generations may have invented one to meet the requirements of their times, it is possible that Odard might not have been too sure of his parentage himself. Doug Hall

    3. Just a warning to be CAREFUL! Probably safer to call a tow truck or AA. Just wanted to pass on this information I heard today when I stopped by Einstein's. I overheard a group of young mothers talking about the following story. This is a true story and did occur to a friend of one of the young mother's. The friend was shopping in the Strongsville Mall (near Cleveland, OH) and it was in the afternoon. When she went to go home, she had a flat tire. A man came by--in a suit and with a brief case--and offered to help her. He changed her flat and while doing so he had placed his briefcase in the trunk of her car. When he was finished he asked if she could drive him to his car--which was on the other side of the mall. She felt badly that she couldn't, but she had to go pick up her kids. Later that day she took the flat tire in to have it fixed, and nothing was wrong with it--someone had let the air out of it. She saw his briefcase in her trunk and she opened it. Inside was a butcher knife and rope.

    3. Last weekend Carole Malisiak was requesting information on Thomas Dutton of Overton, Frodsham, Cheshire. As I live in Frodsham I thought that I should try to help. In the registers of St. Lawrence's Parish Church, Frodsham I found an entry dated 14 Dec 1606, baptism of "Thomas Dutton, fil Hugon'". I then searched for his parents. A Hugh Dutton was baptised on 5 July 1566. In June 1598 a Hugh Dutton married Dorothy Smith. Thomas Dutton of Overton was buried at Frodsham on 24 July 1653. Unfortunately, I have no information on Mary Renny or their marriage. Regards, Edgar Gregory (Frodsham, Cheshire) egregory@ndirect.co.uk

    1. Looking for Lodia Dutton
    2. Hi! Can anyone help me? I'm looking for the parents of Lodia W. Dutton. He was born in Maryland & lived in Cecil Co., MD. He was born approx. 1833 & died in 1885 of tuberculosis. He married Melissa Jeanetta Wales(dau. of John H. Wales & Ariena Cockey Wales) on 26 Dec 1865 in Easton, Talbot Co. MD. They had four children; Anna Irene; E. Netta; David H.; & Elmer Lodia. I suspect that Lodia W. Dutton was descended from the Duttons of Chester Co., PA.; but as of yet I can find no connection. Cecil Co. MD is just over the state line border from Chester Co PA. I'm hoping someone can help me unravel this puzzle of Lodia's parents. Any help or possible leads of where to look would be greatly appreciated! As a side note, I have his sea chest with the original rope handles that was handed down to my grandmother as her hope chest & then passed on to me. Lodia was a sea captain, but whether it was in the navy or just a captain of a fishing vessel I'm not sure. Regardless, I treasure the sea chest. Thanks in advance for your help!
