    3. Hello List, I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see a corps of dedicated genealogy/history buffs working to assist me with my search!  What a nice Christmas gift! In light of this unexpected treat I thought I would present some background information that may or may not be of some use.  Note that this is the direct line of my former husband and daughter. Family history is documented back to David Conner, born about 1750, presumably in Chester County, PA, with a father named Edward.  The family oral history maintains that this Conner family came from Ireland about 1700, and that David and his wife fled from the frontier during the 1778 Wyoming Massacre to Harrisburg,PA where David died in 1792 (death documented) .  David married Abigail Rhodes, daughter of Barnabas and niece of the former Philadelphia mayor, Samuel Rhoads, in 1772.  Now, Abigail was from northern Montgomery/lower Berks County, PA, and so it is conceivable that David was from the part of Chester that borders this area.  Abigail was born in 1748, and Irish naming patterns of their children seem to prevail. In looking for David's father, Edward, I found a marriage record for Edward Conner and Ann Gallaugher in February, 1747 at Abingdon Presbyterian.  The location of the church in Montgomery County, the denomination and the date make this, while circumstantial, a most promising lead. So where did they go? There is a sprinkling of Conners about the Chester County area before mentioned, but nothing seemed to fit.  Equally frustrating was trying to find Edward or David in the PA frontier, a very large place.  There is a big gap of no documentation between 1747 to 1783, the latter showing Edward Conner, Jr's birth in York County, PA.  Just a family bible of a son of David Conner.  No places given. Bummer.  So I thought I'd take a break and study the very interesting story of my distant cousin, George Custer (Custard), who was killed by Indians in 1755 near Lehighton in Carbon County (then Northampton), PA and, amazingly, married to Abigail's aunt, Mary Rhoads, whose history is even more fascinating.  While doing so I would also do a Conner search, just in case Abigail decided to pay her aunt a visit. That is how I discovered a 1758 letter written by inhabitants of Lower Smithfield Township (Stroudsburg area, or lower Minisink) to Governor Denny requesting protection from the Indians (PA Archives, iii, pg 357).  Edward Conner is on the list of signers.  And that is how I came to De Staet van Hillitge Conner in 1739 in the Minisink region. Happy Holidays, Kathy
