    1. Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] Help?
    2. There was not always a marriage record in New Jersey although some of those have been published. So you might try the New Jersey State Archives which do have marriage license records on line, but only after a certain date. Often a marriage is determined from the baptism of the supp. first child, mentioned in a Bible, husbands or fathers will, that kind of thing. Often they do not appear in the church records and the book kept by the minister of such unions seem to be missing for a great many churches. In the very early days of New Jersey, the minister traveled from location to location and may have only been there twice a year, so perhaps it was the Deacons or Elders of the Church's who married the couple prior to his arrival. If he kept them in his possession, as was sometimes the case, they could be missing for many reasons. Rev. Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen in 1727 whose home was at Three Mile Run near New Brunswick, served several outlying congregations in Central New Jersey. "This extended and partially unsettled circuit was something of a strain upon the reverend's energies and only occasional services were held" [GMNJ 15:1. Since the Records of the Harlingen Church, formerly Over-The-Mill Church and Sourlandt were found in the safe at the Harlingen rectory perhaps that may or may be the case for your Church in New Jersey. One other place you might look at the records is: Richard H. Steele, Historical Discourse Delivered at the Celebration of the One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick, N. J., October 1, 1867 (New Brunswick, NJ: The Consistory, 1867), 198- and then beginning on page 209, is a list of Members of the River ad Lawrence Brook Congregration 1717-. Many of these people were later members of the First Reformed Dutch Church of New Brunswick, but I believe these are the only records which exist. The book can be read on line Judy Cassidy On 04/13/13, Lynne Roberts<[1]lnr@surewest.net> wrote: I have come to my wits end - have managed to accumulate a thorough and detailed genealogy for my fifth great grandfather - Andrew (Andries) Norwood (Nurwood, Narwood, Norrid, etc) - b. bef. 4 Apr 1703, NY, NY, NY, d. 23 Jan 1787, lived most of his adult life in New Brunswick, Middlesex, NJ, died in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co, NY - and thanks to much assistance from you all (thanks Pam Sears, Mike Morrissey, Howard Swain, et al) have done a good job of detailing the lives of their progeny. I have managed to gather up all the records held by the New Jersey and New York Archives regarding this family. However, I am completely stumped with the marriage record of Andrew Norwood and Annatje (Hannah) Van Norden (although the fact of the marriage is well documented through baptism and probate records). Now, there has to be some record of the marriage - somewhere. I've tried to contact the repository of the Dutch church records in New Jersey, but they won't talk to me. I've tried the FHL - and have gone through films that just might be relevant - and I've surfed the net until I'm blue in the face - NOTHING. So, I don't think I'll strike gold a second time, don't expect another Mike Morrissey to come galloping in with the answer to all my questions - but I'm really sincerely hoping that one of you will have a great - a good - suggestion for a possible source that I might have missed. I've run dry. I really don't know where else to look - but frankly, I'm not interested in throwing in the towel. By the way, I just got my NYGBS magazine and I see that Russell L. Gasero is going to speak at the NYPL on April 25th. He is the archivist for the Reformed Church in America archives, located in the New Brunswick Theological Seminary. Is anyone going? I would be happy to pay someone to speak to him in my behalf - I really think his archives are my only hope for finding record of the marriage of Andrew Norwood and Annatje Van Norden. If anyone is willing to help me who is planning on hearing his talk, I'd love to communicate with you!!!! And if anyone has any suggestions for a possible source for this marriage record, please pass it on. I'm just out of ideas.
