I see someone answered re the two ladies. There is a City and Town in Montgomery County, NY named Amsterdam - but not New Amsterdam. In New York State there is only one New or Nieuw Amsterdam, which as we know was eventually renamed New York. You are right, there is often a lot of confusion with the old Dutch place names, as there is with individuals names. The city of Amsterdam in upstate New York was incorporated in 1830, which is certainly well after the English takeover of Nieuw Nederland. I have never understood how anybody could think that the principal Dutch community in colonial times would be located nearly 200 miles from the seacoast, but I have seen this other times.
